  • The present study seeks to provide an easy path to differential perceptions of students at the upper high school level by applying a story telling method and also, characteristically, to earn some time for class discussion by reducing learning time for simple calculational procedure through Computer Algebra System(CAS) tools. This study offers a clear example of storytelling textbooks through Sage. Hence, the study aims at enabling students who have practiced contents with Sage tools to deal with diverse and complicated calculation problems, if they learn to build up mathematical formulas for those problems.

  • Theorema system is built on top of Mathematica to automate deductive reasoning processes as the combination of computer algebra system and deductive system. Theorema system that was developed at RISC in Austria provides three modes based on rewriting techniques; computation, problem solving and proving. This paper shows how the computation mode of Theorema can simulate Derive part for TI-92 graphic calculators to produce TI-92 manuals. Moreover, it also describes how such manuals can be converted to web-based learning materials via Java servlet.

  • This paper aims to present some ideas for implementation of Uncertain Relational Databases (URD) which are extensions of classical relational databases. Our system firstly is based on possibility distribution and probability theory to represent and manipulate fuzzy and probabilistic information, secondly adopts flexible mechanisms that allow the management of uncertain data through the resources provided by both available relational database management systems and front-end interfaces, and lastly chooses dynamic SQL to enhance versatility and adjustability of systems.

  • Today linear algebra is one of compulsory courses for university mathematics by virtue of its theoretical fundamentals and fruitful applications. However, a mechanical computation-oriented instruction or a formal concept-oriented instruction is difficult and dull for most students. In this context, how to teach mathematical concepts successfully is a very serious problem. As a solution for this problem, we suggest establishing original concepts in linear algebra from the students' point of view. Any original concept means not only a practical beginning for the historical order and theoretical system but also plays a role of seed which can build most of all the important concepts. Indeed, linear algebra has exactly two original concepts : geometry of planes, spaces and linear equations. The former was investigated in [2], the latter in the present paper.

  • Computer aided conceptual solution of engineering problems can be effectively implemented by qualitative reasoning based on a physical model. Qualitative reasoning needs modeling paradigm which provides intellignet control of modeling assumptions and robust inferences without quantitative information about the system. We developed reasoning method using new algebra of qualitative mathematics. The method is applied to a conceptual design scheme of anadaptive control system of cutting process. The method identifies differences between proportional and proportional-integral control scheme of cutting process. It is shown that unfeasible investment could be prevented in the early conceptual stage by the qualitative reasoning procedures proposed in this paper.

  • The aim of this paper is to develop a web-based Virtual Learning System for discrete mathematics learning using CAS (Computer Algebra System), The system contains a series of contents that are common between secondary und university curriculum in discrete mathematics such as sets, relations, matrices, graphs etc. We designed and developed web-based virtual learning contents contained in the proposed system based on Mathematia, webMathematica and phpMath taking advantages of rapid computation and visualization. The virtual learning system for discrete math provides movie lectures and 'practice mode' authored with phpMath in order to enhance conceptual understanding of each movie lesson. In particular, matrix learning is facilitated with conceptual diagram that provides interactive quizzes. Once the quiz results are submitted, Bayesian inference network diagnoses strong and weak parts of learning nodes for generating diagnostic reports to facilitate personalized learning. As part of formative evaluation, the overall responses were collected for future revision of the system with 10 university students.

  • This study was designed to gain insights into instrumental genesis process of CAS in Korean high school students and to explore its practical potentials in secondary mathematics education. Two activities, such as Concept-Centered Mathematics Activity based on CAS and Problem Solving Activities, were constructed and executed to 10th Grade seven students for twelve class hours. The finding on the students' activities are as follows : it is meaningful in mathematics education, especially in algebra education, in that the CAS based concept centered mathematics activity offers great opportunities to deal with high-qualified application problems. The problem solving activities based on the instrumented CAS may have an influence on the sequence of mathematics curriculum, e.g. the optimization problems may precede the calculus problems such as derivatives in high school. The results of this study to investigate the instrumental genesis of CAS in mathematical activities will give insights into the secondary mathematics curriculum to prepare the CAS in Korea.

  • This study was designed to gain insight to adopt CAS into secondary level algebra education in Korea. Most inactive usage of calculators in math and most negative effects of calculators on their achievements of Korean students were shown in International studies such as TIMSS-R. A comparative study was carried out with consideration of mathematical backgrounds and technological environments. 8 Korean students and 26 US students in Grade 11 were participated in this study. Subjects' Problem solving process and their strategies of CAS usage in classical Box-problem with CAS were analyzed. CAS helped modeling by providing symbolic manipulation commands and graphs with students' mathematical knowledge. Results indicates that CAS requires shifts focus in algebraic contents: recognition of decimal & algebraic presentations of numbers; linking various presentations, etc. The extent of instrumentation effects on the selection of problem solving strategies among Korea and US students. • The enormous increase of data with the development of the information technology make internet users to be hard to find suitable information tailored to their needs. In the face of changing environment, the information filtering method, which provide sorted-out information to users, is becoming important. The data on the internet exists as various type. However, similarity calculation algorithm frequently used in existing collaborative filtering method is tend to be suitable to the numeric data. In addition, in the case of the categorical data, it shows the extreme similarity like Boolean Algebra. In this paper, We get the similarity in SNS user's information which consist of the mixed data using the Gower's similarity coefficient. And we suggest a method that is softer than radical expression such as 0 or 1 in categorical data. The clustering method using this algorithm can be utilized in SNS or various recommendation system.
