  • Berlin Philharmonic Concert Hall is one of most prominent architecture of Hans Scharoun, which is known as the fine combination of the functionalism as an important factor in modern architecture and the hi-developed technology Moreover, the plan and spatial planning of the concert hall is famous for its evolutionary approach compared to other traditional concert halls. The objective of this paper is to examine forms and organic system of functions of this concert hall in order to re-evaluate it's historical meanings in our modern architecture history, The current study will also look into how the personal background of Hans Scharoun has influenced his design in various ways, especially the inside of lobby and auditorium of Berlin Philharmonic Concert Hall.

  • Various room acoustic parameters and their optimal values were proposed and verified as proper interpretations to the listeners' preference of concert hall sounds. However the listening environment has been changed since they were developed, and the listeners' preference may not be the same among countries of different cultural backgrounds. Actual listeners' preference should be applied to the design of a new concert hall. A survey on the listening preference was carried out for 22 music experts. A room acoustical design process was proposed which made the acoustical environment of a concert hall as close to the listeners' preferences.

  • This study deals with a subjective assessment to investigate the preferred acoustic conditions and determine the important acoustical parameters in concert halls. A subjective test was carried out using dummy head recorded sounds made in actual halls in Australia (referred to as Hall A and Hall B) to evaluate the acoustic performance of two halls. The results of subjective tests were then correlated with measured acoustical parameters to investigate the significant determinants for the preference judgements. The listeners show a stronger Preference for seats in the Hall B than those in the Hall A. The low preferences for seats in the Hall A are in agreement with live performance ratings assessed by musicians. It is found that the sound level is the most significant acoustical parameter for evaluating the overall acoustic preference in the two halls.

  • This paper investigates stage acoustics in concert halls for ensemble performance in terms of stage support parameters. A concert hall with large stage area was selected. Objective measurements were carried out according to Gade's methods for investigating stage support (ST1). The sound field on the stage was evaluated using stage and audience acoustical parameters. According to the positions at stage, different acoustical characteristics were found. Higher ST1 and lower $IACC_{E3}$ were measured near side and rear stage walls. In case of conductor/soloist vs. orchestra player, objective measurement of acoustical parameters shows that early sound fields depend on the source-receiver distance but late sound fields depend on the location of side and rear walls. In addition, in-situ evaluation of the trio instrumentalists was carried out. Results show that ensemble is favored by higher early reflection of sounds and sound diffusion affecting ‘blending’ of their performance.

  • Stage in classical shoebox type concert hall is placed and occupy one side of the hall and have much early reflections from surrounded walls and ceiling nearby. On the other hand stage in vinyard terrace concert hall, which is surrounded by terrace seats instead of walls and ceiling, has lack of early reflections which may cause lack of communications among the players. Vinyard hall stage is enclosed with terrace seats front walls, while the players located on the stage riser keep the walls off as the walls have limited heights. Ensemble reflector installed above the stage is an effective way for the players to monitor the sound produced on the stage. That may help achieving a good ensemble of the performance. Ensemble reflector over the stage of a large vinyard terrace hall of 2,000 seats was designed with the variables of the location, the shape and the area. The effectiveness of the ensemble reflector is verified with the parameter of stage support.

  • In this Paper, the effect of stage ceiling height on the acoustic characteristics of rectangular concert halls are investigated. To find out the acoustic properties of audience area, A simple Boston Symphony Hall(BSH) model which is typically rectangular shaped was applied for computer simulation. A newly built rectangular concert hall with 400 seats was also chosen for a scale model $(1.2m{\times}0.68m{\times}0.31m)$ study and its computer simulation varing the stage ceiling height and the volume. The results show that RT increased as the stage ceiling was lowered and the difference rate of RT by its variance is from -0.09 to -0.06[sec/m].

  • The effects of the movable reflectors on the stage acoustics in Seoul's Sejong Performing Arts Center (3,048-seat multi-purpose hall, stage area of $270m^2$ within an orchestra shell) and Ceramic Palace Hall (440-seat concert hall, stage area of $105m^2$) were investigated. Acoustical parameters were evaluated by measuring stage and audience acoustics in the two halls. The study was primarily based on the stage support parameter STI proposed by Gade (Acustica 65, pp.193-203, 1989). Results showed that STI varied on the stage of the large hall according to the position of the reflectors, whereas STI did not vary in the small hall. In the large hall, a smaller clear stage area (bounded by the reflectors) yields an increase in both STI and other early energy measures. In the small hall, early energy decreases when its stage's surface diffusion was covered with specular reflectors.

  • In this paper, we propose an interface for interactive sound experience in the virtual concert hall. The proposed interface consists of two systems, called 'virtual acoustic position' and 'virtual active listening'. To provide these systems, we applied an artificial reverberation algorithm, multi-channel source separation and head-related transfer function. The proposed interface was implemented by using Unity. The interface provides the virtual concert hall to user through Oculus Rift, one of the virtual reality headsets. Moreover, we used Leap Motion as a control device to allow a user experience the system with free-hand. And user can experience the sound of the system through headphones.

  • In this paper, the floor vibration of an example concert hall building was measured and floor safety criteria were analytically checked through comparison between experimental and analytical results. The floor bottom plate model was constructed considering the composite effect and the analytical model was modified to have the natural frequency identical to the measured one. Also, time history analysis was conducted using the dynamic loads induced by human rhythmic movement during a musical performance, and the analytically calculated floor accelerations were similar to the measured one. Based on this model, the floor vibration level due to the group activities of about 400 persons, maximum available persons for the concert hall, was estimated. It was confirmed that the human induced dynamic loads applied to the column and beam would be much lower than the design strength. In addition, the horizontal acceleration level is just 2% of the design seismic load, so the concert hall is safe in both vertical and horizontal excitations by human rhythmic movements.

  • Jeju has many out-of-town cultural areas owing to its low accessibility to concert halls. Based on data from Jeju in 2019, this study selected possible sites for concert halls and examined the location status of existing concert halls in Jeju by utilizing GIS analysis. As a result, directions on location selection are proposed for the western and eastern parts of Jeju, where accessibility to concert halls is relatively difficult. Considering the theory, prior research, and the regional characteristics of Jeju, the directions for location selection exclude residential areas and areas with little accessibility. They also list good points for accessibility within areas that have little of it, that are distant from administrative dong areas in Jeju-si and Seogwipo-si, that have friendly natural scenery, and that already have accessible public transportation. Accordingly, four places were proposed as possible areas for construction of a concert hall in 2020. This study is expected to contribute to cultural marketing that makes the Jeju area a Cultural Island.
