  • Recently, a study on condensers for refrigerators has focused on new model which will cost less and will be more efficient. Some widely used condensers for domestic refrigerators are wire-and-tube type condenser, hot-wall type condenser, and spiral type condenser. Some companies which use the spiral type condenser at the moment try to develop a new tube-and-plate type condenser which will cost less and will be as efficient as the spiral type. As a standard condenser type, tube-and-plate type condenser is used in this study. A two-dimensional numerical model for the tube-and-plate type condenser is proposed, and the flow and heat transfer characteristics for several types of condensers are investigated.

Dynamic characteristics of the compressor-combined condenser system (압축기 계가 결합된 응축기의 동특성)

  • This paper reports the analysis of dynamic characteristics of air-cooled condenser. At first, there is an assumption that the superheated vapor flows into the condenser inlet. And in order to consider the effect of pressure change in the dynamic characteristics of the condenser the combined system of condenser and compressor was used. By using the equation of energy balance and the equation of mass balance, the basic equation for describing the dynamic characteristics of condenser can be derived. The transfer function for describing dynamic response of the condenser to flow rate change outlet can be obtained from using linearizations and Laplace transformations of the equation. From this transfer function, analytical investigation which affects the frequency responses of condenser has been made. Through this study, it became possible that the information about the dynamic characteristics of air-cooled condenser is offered. While the average heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant side necessary for the theoretical calculation of the dynamic characteristics is given by calculation method for the tube length and pressure drop of air-cooled condenser.

  • The performance of the condenser installed in the air-conditioning plant room of a high-rise building was studied numerically. The effect of the draft direction on the performance of an air-conditioner was analyzed. The on-coil temperature of the condenser was investigated by varying the arrangement and location o( the condenser in the air-conditioning plant room. The performance of an air-conditioner was also evaluated by using COP (coefficient of performance) and CGPI (condenser group performance indicator). The condenser in an air-conditioning plant room should be arranged in such a manner that the fan of the condenser is facing the outside of the building to exhaust the hot air directly, The model by which the condenser is located at the lower-left end of an air-conditioning plant room can prevent the hot air from reentering, and allow indrafting of fresh air. When the direction of draft is to the frontal face of the building, the performance of the condenser above 30th floor is degraded.

Performance Evaluation of a Parallel Flow Condenser for Automotive Air Conditioners (자동차 에어컨용 평행류 응축기의 성능평가)

  • The new shape of louver-fin has been applied to a parallel flow condenser to enhance air-side heat transfer rate lot an automotive air-conditioner R- l34a is employed as a refrigerant inside the flat tube of the condenser, This problem is of particular interest in reducing the geometric size of the automotive air conditioner The effect of air flow rate on pressure drop as well as heat transfer in air side are studied in detail. Comparison of the performance is also made with that of a conventional parallel flow condenser, which is available in the market. The results obtained indicate that the total pressure drop through the pre sent condenser is not changed, while the heat transfer rate is increased by 24% at high veto city of air flow, compared with those of the conventional condenser. The parallel flow condenser with a new shape of louver-fin could be reduced in size by 20% for the equivalent condenser capacity, compared with the conventional parallel flow condenser.

A Numerical Study on R410A Charge Amount in an Air Cooled Mini-Channel Condenser (공랭식 미소유로 응축기의 R410A 충전량 예측에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • A numerical study was performed to predict refrigerant charge amount in a mini-channel condenser for a R410A residential air-conditioning system. Multi-channel flat tubes with 12 mini-channels of 1.17 mm average hydraulic diameter for each tube were applied to the condenser. The condenser consisted of 3 passes, and the first, second, and third pass had 44, 19, and 11 tubes, respectively. Each pass was connected by a vertical header. In this study, the condenser was divided into 410 finite volumes, and analyzed by an $\varepsilon$-NTU method. With thermophysical properties and void fraction models for each volume element, the R410A amount distribution and a total charge amount in the condenser were calculated. The predicted total charge amount was compared with the experimentally measured charge amount under a standard ARI A condition. The developed model could predict the charge amount in the mini-channel condenser within prediction errors from -23.9% to -3.0%. Air velocity distribution at the condenser face was considered as non-uniform and uniform by the simulation model, and its results showed that the air velocity distribution could significantly influence the charge amount and vapor phase distribution in the condenser.

  • Through analysing the influence of steam flow direction on the liquid formation and motion behavior in the condenser shell side, the physical model for existing numerical simulation program of condenser is improved by introducing the correlations for flow resistance and condensation heat exchange coefficient in which the influences of steam flow direction are considered according to the available experimental data. Thus a more suitable and general condenser simulation approach is presented and a new condenser calculation program is developed. With the experimental data of a pannier- arrangement experimental condenser, the adaptability of the new condenser simulation approach is verified. General characteristics of this type of condenser are also revealed.

A Study on a Microchannel Condenser in a R410A A/C System (R410A 냉방시스템의 마이크로채널 응축기에 관한 연구)

  • A microchannel condenser as a part of a R410A residential air-conditioning system was examined experimentally and numerically in this study. The system was operated in separate environmental chambers and its performance was measured in ARI A, B, and C conditions. A numerical model for the microchannel condenser was developed and its results were compared with the experimental results. The model simulated the condenser with the assumption of the uniform air and refrigerant distribution, and with the consideration of the non-uniform air distribution at the face of the condenser and refrigerant distribution in the headers. In order to consider the non-uniform air distribution, air velocity contours were generated from the measured local air velocities at the face of the condenser. The simulation results showed that the effect of the air and refrigerant distribution was not a significant parameter in predicting the capacity of the microchannel condenser which was experimentally examined in this study. The comparison of the calculated and experimental results showed that the condenser capacity could be predicted well for every test condition. However, the prediction of refrigerant pressure drop deviated significantly from the measured values.

Frequency Response Characteristics of Air-Cooled Condenser in Case of Inputting Various Disturbances

  • The frequency response characteristics of a condenser were numerically studied for the control of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The important parameters, such as the refrigerant flow rate, refrigerant temperature, air velocity, and air temperature at the condenser inlet, were analyzed. Superheated vapor, two phase, and subcooled liquid domain in condenser can be described by using the energy balance equation and the mass balance equation in refrigerant and tube wall, the basic equation for describing the dynamic characteristics of condenser can be derived. The transfer function for describing dynamic response of the condenser to disturbances can be obtained from using linearizations and Laplace transformations of the equation. From this transfer function, analytical investigation which affects the frequency responses of condenser has been made. Block diagrams were made based on the analytic transfer function; dynamic responses were evaluated in Bode diagrams on the frequency response. Through this study, it became possible that the information about the dynamic characteristics of air-cooled condenser is offered. The results may be used for determining the optimum design parameters in actual components and entire systems. Also, the mathematical models, frequency response may be used to help understanding, evaluate optimum design parameters, design control systems and determine on setting the best controller for the refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

Numerical Study on the Performance of a Fin-and-Tube Condenser with Non-Uniform Air Distribution and Different Tube Types (불균일 공기분포와 관의 종류에 따른 핀-관 응축기의 성능 특성에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • A numerical study was performed to predict the performance of a fin-and-tube condenser. A condenser model was developed and verified by comparing the simulation results with experimental data for a R410A condenser in a residential air-conditioning system. The prediction error was 0.07% and -5.77% for the condenser capacity and pressure drop, respectively. In simulation results, the capacity and pressure drop of the condenser with even air velocity distribution were 0.67% and 12.93% higher than those with uneven distribution of air velocity. It was predicted by the model that the refrigerant distribution at the condenser inlet to the two first passes was not significantly influenced by the air distribution. The simulation results presented that the 1.49% of capacity and 64.6% of pressure drop were reduced by replacing helical microfin tubes with smooth tubes for the condenser.

  • In this study, the heat transfer and flow field of condenser used on Kim-chi refrigerator is analysed with numerical method. Main objective is to present the base data for designing new condenser model with improvement of heat transfer performance. For CFD analysis, a commercial code, STAR-CCM+ was used. The water was used for the inner working fluid and the air was used for the outer fluid. The condenser type used in this study is a flat plate fin-and-tube heat exchanger. As factors for performance analysis, the effect of condenser geometry and air velocity was investigated. As a result, it has been observed that there is a suitable fin pitch with which heat transfer performance of condenser is maximized.
