  • Al-Si coated boron steel has been widely used as commercial hot stamping steel. When the steel is heated at 900~930℃ for 5 min in an electric furnace, thickness of the coating layer increases as a consequence of formation of intermetallic compounds and diffusion layer. The diffusion layer plays an important roll in blunting the propagation of crack from coating layer to base steel. Change in microstructure and coating layer of Al-Si coated boron steel after conductive heating with higher heating rate than electric furnace has been investigated in this study. Conductive-heated steel showed the martensitic structure with vickers hardness of 505~567. Both intermetallic compounds in coating layer and diffusion layer were not observed in conductive-heated steel due to rapid heating. It has been found that the conductive-heating consisting of rapid heating to 550℃ which is lower than melting point of Al-Si coating layer, slower heating to 900℃, and then 1 min holding at 900℃ is effective in forming intermetallic compound in coating layer and diffusion layer.

  • Heating films were prepared with composites of poly (methyl methacrylate) and conductive graphite. The as-prepared composite was deposited on a PET film and then fabricated using a bar coater to produce a film with uniform thickness. Copper electrodes were attached to both ends of the as-prepared film, and the heating characteristics of the film were analyzed while applying a DC voltage. The electrical conductivity and heating temperature of the heating films depended on the size, structure, content, and the dispersion characteristics of the graphite in the composite. The thermal energy was adjusted by controlling the electrical energy, based on the Joule heating theory. The electrical resistance of the film was altered in proportion to Ohm's law, and the heating temperature was changed according to the structure of the film (interelectrode spacing or electrode length) and the conductive graphite content. When the content of conductive graphite in the film increases, the electrical resistance decreases, and the heating temperature increases; however, there is no significant change above a certain content (50%).

  • Encapsulation is required since organic materials used in OLED devices are fragile to water vapor and oxygen. Laser sealing method is currently used where IR laser is scanned along the glass-frit coated lines. Laser method is, however, not suitable to encapsulating large-sized glass substrate due to the nature of sequential scanning. In this work we propose a new method of encapsulation using Joule heating. Conductive layer is patterned along the sealing lines on which the glass frit is screen printed and sintered. Electric field is then applied to the conductive layer resulting in bonding both the panel glass and the encapsulation glass by melting glass-frit. In order to obtain uniform bonding the temperature of a conductive layer having a shape of closed loop should be uniform. In this work we conducted simulation for heat distribution according to the structure of a conductive layer used as a Joule-heat source. Uniform temperature was obtained with an error of 5% by optimizing the structure of a conductive layer. Based on the results of thermal simulations we concluded that Joule-heating induced encapsulation would be a good candidate for encapsulation method especially for large area glass substrate.

  • The heating unit of direct heating method manufactured as the plasma spray coating of $TiO_2/NiCr$ conductive heating material on the surface of heating unit in order to improve the disadvantages of indirect heating method. $TiO_2$ and NiCr (80wt.%Ni-20wt.%Cr) that had the properties of conduction and heating was chosen for the conductive heating material. The compositions of the composite powders were studied $TiO_2-30wt.%NiCr\;and\;TiO_2-10wt.%NiCr$. As the heating temperature was increased, the hardness of heating layer was increased because of the fine microstructure and the decrease of porosity. The adhesion strength was decreased for coarsening and connection of voids in the insulation layer, and the electrical resistivity of heating layer was increased for fine crack formation and growth. In this study, the best efficient sprayed coatings with heating unit was concluded as the plasma sprayed $TiO_2-10wt.%NiCr$ coatings that was heat treated at $300^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper proposes a method for fabricating heatable glass using the conduction characteristics of metal thin films deposited on the surface of Low-e(Low emissivity) glass. The heating value of Low-e glass depends on the Joule heat caused by Low-e glass sheet resistance. Hence, its prediction and design are possible by measuring the sheet resistance of the material. In this study, silver electrodes were placed at 50 mm intervals on a soft Low-e glass sample with a low emissivity layer of 11 nm. This study measured the sheet resistance using a 4-point probe, predicted the power consumption and heating value of the Low-e glass, and confirmed the heating performance through fabrication and experience. There are two conventional methods for manufacturing heatable glass. One is a method of inserting nichrome heating wire into normal glass, and the other is a method of depositing a conductive transparent thin film on normal glass. The method of inserting nichrome heating wire is excellent in terms of the heating performance, but it damages the transparency of the glass. The method for depositing a conductive transparent thin film is good in terms of transparency, but its practicality is low because of its complicated process. This paper proposes a method for manufacturing heatable glass with the desired heating performance using Low-e glass, which is used mainly to improve the insulation performance of a building. That is by emitting a laser beam to the conductive metal film coated on the entire surface of the Low-e glass. The proposed method is superior in terms of transparency to the conventional method of inserting nichrome heating wire, and the manufacturing process is simpler than the method of depositing a conductive transparent thin film. In addition, the heat characteristics were compared according to the patterning of the surface thin film of the Low-e glass by an emitting laser and the laser output conditions suitable for Low-e glass.

  • Joule heat is generated by applying an electric filed to a conductive layer located beneath or above the amorphous silicon film, and is used to raise the temperature of the silicon film to crystallization temperature. An electric field was applied to an indium tin oxide (ITO) conductive layer to induce Joule heating in order to carry out the crystallization of amorphous silicon. Polycrystalline silicon was produced within the range of a millisecond. To investigate the kinetics of Joule-heating induced crystallization (JIC) solid phase crystallization was conducted using amorphous silicon films deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and using tube furnace in nitrogen ambient. Microscopic and macroscopic uniformity of crystallinity of JIC poly-Si was measured to have better uniformity compared to that of poly-Si produced by other methods such as metal induced crystallization and Excimer laser crystallization.
