  • Design rules of optical transmission links with dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation (OPC) for compensating optical signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation (SPM) of single mode fiber (SMF) are investigated in this paper. Design rules consist of optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) and optimal range of launching power of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channels as a function of total transmission length and span length. In all considered total transmission length and span length, optimal NRD are obtained to +10 ps/nm and -10 ps/mn for transmission links, which is controlled by precompensation and postcompensation, respectively. It is confirmed that system performances are more improved and effective NRD for wide launching power have wider range as total transmission length and span length are more decreased.

  • The characteristics of stimulated Brillouin scattering wave for applications to high power laser was experimentally investigated. The peak power reflectivity and the phase conjugation fidelity of Stokes wave with respect to the focal length of lens were measured, and the phase conjugation fidelity for a compressed part of the Stokes wave was also investigated. For the long focal length of lens.(f=100 cm), the peak power of the Stokes wave amounts to about twice as high as that of incident wave. The phase conjugation fidelity for the compressed leading pulse is up to 90%, better than that for other temporal parts of the Stokes pulse. In spatial distribution, the Stokes pulse from the axial region has the largest SBS gain, and it has been ascertained as a best candidate to the application due to excellent pulse compression, peak power reflectivity, and good phase conjugation fidelity.

  • 1,3,5-Tricyano-2,4,6-tris[2-(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl]benzene derivatives have been synthesized as a new type of octupolar nonlinear optical molecules and their linear and nonlinear optical properties were determined. The λmax values increa sed with the conjugation length and as the conjugation bridge was changed from phenyl to thienyl group. For phenyl and thiophene derivatives, the b value increased with conjugation length. In contrast, the $\beta$ values of the thiophene derivatives were much smaller than the corresponding phenyl derivatives.

  • The effects of amine donors ($a:NH_2,\;b:NMe_2,\;c:NMePh,\;d:NPh_2$) and conjugation length on the molecular hyperpolarizabilities of a series of dipolar molecules have been theoretically investigated by using CPHF/6-31G method. The first hyperpolarizabilities (${\beta}$) of p-nitrobenzene derivatives increase with the donor in the order, $NH_2\;<\;NMe_2\;<\;NMePh\;<\;NPh_2$, whereas slightly different order is observed in more conjugated derivatives, i.e., $NH_2\;<\;NPh_2\;<\;NMe_2\;<\;NMePh$. The result has been attributed to the extent of charge transfer and torsion angle. Moreover, the results show that "non-traditional" ${\pi}$-conjugation effect exists in small compounds and decreases as the conjugation length between donor and acceptor increases.

  • Suppressing or mitigating signal distortion due to group velocity dispersion and optical Kerr effects is necessary in ultra-high speed and long-haul wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems. Dispersion management (DM), optical phase conjugation (OPC), and the combination of these two are promising techniques to compensate for signal distortion. In this paper, to implement a flexible optical WDM network, a new optical link configuration with a randomly distributed single-mode fiber (SMF) length and fixed residual dispersion per span in the combination of DM and OPC is proposed and investigated. The simulation results show that the best net residual dispersion (NRD) in the proposed optical links is +10 ps/nm, which is independent of pre- and postcompensation. The effective launch power of the WDM channel is increased more in the optical links with NRD = +10 ps/nm controlled by only precompensation. Furthermore, the system performance difference between the proposed optical link configuration with the best NRD and the conventional optical link with uniform distribution of the SMF length had little significance. Consequently, it is confirmed that the proposed optical link configuration with the best NRD is effective and useful for implementing a reconfigurable long-haul WDM network.

  • The design rule depending on total transmission length is induced in the optical links with residual dispersion per span (RDPS) of the random distribution, which is adopted for implementing the flexible systems of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission with dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation. DM parameters used for the analysis of the design rule are the effective net residual dispersion (NRD) and the effective launch power. It is confirmed that the flexible optical network configuration with the total transmission length lower than 1,000 km is possible, because the system performance difference between the randomly distribution and the uniform distribution of RDPS is small. And, in the optical links with the randomly distributed RDPS, the wide NRD can be applied for transmitting WDM channels of the relatively wide launch power.

  • A blue light emitting device has been successfully fabricated using a polymer with regulated conjugation length containing trimethylsilyl substituted phenylenevinylene units. Electroluminescence from the device has an emission maximum at 470 nm. The device shows typical diode characteristics with operating voltage of 20 V and the light becomes visible at a current density of less than $0.5;mA/cm^2$. The electroluminescence spectrum is virtually identical with the photoluminescence spectrum, indicating that the radiation mechanisms are the same for both. A light emitting device using the blend of a large band gap polymer and a small band gap polymer was also fabricated. Light emission from the small band gap polymer shows much improved quantum efficiency, but there is no light emission from the large band gap polymer. Quantum efficiency of the blend increases up to about two orders of magnitude greater than that of the small band gap polymer with increasing proportion of the large band gap polymer. The improvement in quantum efficiency is interpreted in terms of exciton transfer and the hole blocking behaviour of the large band gap polymer. Finally, we have fabricated a patterned flexible light emitting device using the high quantum efficiency polymer blend system.

  • The compensation characteristics of the distorted WDM channels compensated for by dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation in the long-haul ($50\;fiber\;spans{\times}80km$) transmission link with the randomly distributed single mode fiber (SMF) length and residual dispersion per spans (RDPS) for implementing of the flexible link configuration are investigated. It is confirmed that the compensation effect in the link with the randomly distributed SMF length and RDPS is similar with that in the link with the uniform distribution, when the launch power of WDM channels are restricted within 0 dBm. This result means that the proposed link configuration is useful for designing and deploying the long-haul WDM transmission link.

  • A quantum-chemical investigation on the conformations and electronic properties of bis[2-{2-methoxy-4,6-di(t-butyl)phenyl}ethenyl]benzenes (MBPBs) as building block for ${\pi}$-conjugate polymer are performed in order to display the effects of t-butyl and methoxy group substitution and of kink(ortho and meta) linkage. The conjugation length of the polymers can be controlled by substituents and kink linkages of backbone. Structures for the molecules, o-, m-, and p-MBPBs as well as unsubstituted o-, m-, and p-DSBs were fully optimized by using semiempirical AM1, PM3 methods, and ab initio HF method with 3-21G(d) basis set. The potential energy curves with respect to the change of single torsion angle are obtained by using semiempirical methods and ab initio HF/3-21G(d) basis set. The curves are similar shape in the molecules with respect to the position of vinylene groups. It is shown that the conformations of the molecules are compromised between the steric repulsion interaction and the degree of the conjugation. Electronic properties of the molecules were obtained by applying the optimized structures and geometries to the ZINDO/S method. ZINDO/S analysis performed on the geometries obtained by AM1 method and HF/3-21G(d) level is reported. The absorption wavelength on the geometries obtained by AM1 method is much longer than that by HF/3-21G(d) level. The absorption wavelength of MBPBs are red shifted with comparison to that of corresponding DSBs in the same torsion angle because of electron donating substituents. The absorption wavelength of isomers with kink(orth and meta) linkage is shorter than that of para linkage.

  • The compensation characteristics of the distorted WDM channels compensated for by dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation in the long-haul (50 fiber spans ${\times}80km$) transmission link with the randomly distributed single mode fiber (SMF) length and residual dispersion per spans (RDPS) are investigated as a function of the arrangement of SMF and dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and the control position of net residual dispersion (NRD). It is confirmed that the compensation effect of the distorted WDM channels strongly depends on the arragement of SMF and DCF, rather than the control position of NRD.
