The Effect of Deceptive Brand Image on Consumer Purchase Intention: Empirical Evidence from Iraqi Market

  • In recent years, the Iraqi market witnessed a large opening that resulted from the entry of many different products with an absence of government regulations. As a result, marketing deception practices have emerged as a new phenomenon. This study examines the effect of deceptive brand image on consumer purchase intention, with consumer attitude as a mediator. A quantitative method was applied in the form of a questionnaire distributed to shoppers at Carrefour Supermarket in Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. A random sampling technique was conducted. Subsequently, 200 questionnaires were distributed, and 175 valid questionnaires were analyzed, indicating an 87% response rate. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) has been utilized to test the hypothesis. The result showed that brand image deception has a negative impact on consumer purchasing intention. Also, attitude mediates the relationship between deceptive brand image and consumer purchase intention. The empirical finding confirms that deceptive marketing practices such as brand deception can change the attitude of consumers negatively toward brands and, therefore, affect the consumer purchase intentions. The findings suggest that honest brand marketing is beneficial in increasing the attitude toward the brand. This strategy will increase consumer purchase intentions.

대학생 소비자의 TV광고정보인지 및 이해에 관한 연구: 광고 속 소비자기만요소를 중심으로 (College Students' TV Advertising Information Recognition and Comprehension: A Focus on the Consumer-deception Factors in Commercials)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze college students' TV advertising information recognition, comprehension and affecting factors on them. Data were collected by a survey of college student consumers after experiments with TV commercials. ANOVA, Duncan, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were carried out with the gathered data. The results are as follows. First, the TV advertising information comprehension degree of the college students consumers were shown to be low, by 41.2%. The comprehension degree was especially low when the information was presented visually without any verbal expression. Second, assuming that the comprehension of TV advertisements is defined by a correct perceptual understanding after recognizing the consumer-deception factors, the percentage of correct answers was poor, by 29.2%. Third, according to sex, average monthly income, degree of immersion on TV commercials, advertisement attitude, and consumer education of school, the TV advertisement information recognition and comprehension showed varying degrees between the groups. In the case of women students whose average monthly income was 100 to 300 thousand Korean won, had a high degree of immersion on TV commercials, and a high degree of consumer education at school, the TV advertising information recognition was shown to be high. In the case of third year college students who had a medium level of immersion on TV commercials and a high degree of consumer education at school, the TV advertisement comprehension was high. Fourth, the high explanatory factor of TV advertising information recognition and comprehension was found to be common because of consumer education at school.

온라인상의 소비자 기만 인터페이스 규제방안 연구: 다크패턴을 중심으로 (A Study on the Regulation of Consumer Deception Interface: Focusing on Dark Patterns)

  • After COVID-19, the percentage of digital consumption has soared. Meanwhile, as the online platform market grows in size and digital commerce is activated, controversy over the "dark pattern" that induces consumers to do unintended things online continues. Dark patterns are deceptive design patterns that cause consumer rights and financial damage and can result in damaging fair market competition. As a result, the need to regulate dark patterns is raised not only by overseas regulators but also in Korea, and there are growing calls for strengthening consumer protection against dark patterns, with amendments to related laws being proposed by the National Assembly. On the other hand, there is no agreed definition of dark pattern from a normative point of view, and there is a concern that even legitimate advertising marketing activities of companies may be regulated, so a review of dark pattern regulatory measures is required. In this study, dark patterns were reviewed from a normative point of view and appropriate regulatory measures were analyzed. In particular, the problem of the dark pattern can be applied in a way that the market regulates and controls itself in consideration of the characteristics of the online platform. This study reviewed the possibility of self-regulation for dart patterns and proposed the role of each subject.

소비자 비윤리 유형과 판매자와의 상호작용 유형의 관계 - 전라북도 소비자를 중심으로 - (Relationships between Consumer Non-Ethics and Interaction with Salespersons)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the consumer non-ethical behavior and the interaction with salespersons and their relationships. For this purpose, adults in Chunlabuk-do were surveyed and 675 questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS statistical program. The results of the analysis were as follows: 1. Three dimensions of the consumer non-ethical behaviors were the unconscience, the illegality, and the deception. Two dimensions of the interaction with salespersons were the passive and the assertive interactions. 2. There were two clusters respectively; ethical and non-ethical groups for the consumer non-ethical behavior/ passive and assertive groups for the interaction with salespersons. 3. Generally, the more educated and the older persons were, the less they tended to be ethical and the more passively they tended to interact with the salespersons. 4. There were significant differences between the clusters of consumer non-ethical behavior and those of interaction. The non-assertive interaction group were found more in the non-ethical group and the assertive interaction group more in the ethical groups.

화장품 판매자들의 소비자와 판매자로서의 비윤리적 상거래의 관계 (The Relationship between Consumer's and Sales Person's Unethics)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the differences of ethical attitudes as consumer and as salesperson among cosmetic salesperson. For this purpose, 128 cosmetic salespersons, Chunlabukdo, were sampled, 2007. The quesionnaire was composed of the demographic characteristics, attitudes toward the clients, the ethics related to work, and ethical attitudes as consumer. The differences were statistically tested at p<.10. The results of this study as follows; The sub-variables of attitudes toward customers were irresponsibility, understanding and respect for customers, and first priority to Sales persons. The ethics related to work's were sales of defected products, unfair sales practices, and unusual discount. Consumer ethics' were false and deception, invasion of Sales person's rights, and illegal. The types of consumer's ethics were distributed from 57.5% for the unethical consumers, 15.7% for the middle consumers, and 26.8% for the ethical consumers. The salespersons as the ethical consumers tended to show irresponsible attitudes to the clients and first priority to themselves rather than customers. Unethical consumers tended to treat their customers in an unethical sales manners.

Ethical Issues in Business Marketing Researches

  • Purpose: Various ethical issues arise in different stages of management and business marketing research. The current study aims to take look at practices that ensure informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, deception, and legal aspect in data management in procedures involved in marketing research. Research design, data and methodology: Literature content analysis was conducted for this research and the current author has investigated journal articles mostly to guarantee a high degree of content validity and to keep the advantages of qualitative content approach. The current study explores manifest topics regarding the ethical issues of business marketing research. Results: The current study found that ethical consideration needs to be similarly significant and learning from the previous researchers' approach to handling this issue is helpful for future research and is essential to have additional guidelines. Also, four findings (Lack of Informed Consent, Deception, Invasion of Privacy and Confidentiality, and Legal Data Management) indicate that marketing researchers need to consider before undertaking any project. Conclusions: Overall, the study presents practical suggestions though unexhausted. By raising these ethical marketing issues, consumer behavior disciplines will continue to expand and contribute positively towards attaining thoughts, feelings, and decisions that positively contribute to marketing research as the foundation for effective marking practices.

간접광고가 구매 의도에 미치는 영향 (Decomposing Impact of Product Placement on Purchase Intention)

  • 본 연구는 간접광고가 시청자인 소비자의 구매 의도에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 검증하고자 하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 최근 간접광고가 일반 광고보다 비용이 저렴하고 노출시간에 따른 제한으로부터 자유롭다는 장점 때문에 급격히 증가하고 있다. 본 연구는 이런 현상을 반영하기 위해 간접광고에 대한 중요도가 높은 변수와 시대적 변화를 반영한 변수를 모형에 포함하였다. 이를 위해, 본 연구는 간접광고의 고유 특성을 반영한 변수로 유행 관여도, 연예인관여도, 노골적 묘사, 노출 정도를, 간접광고의 윤리적 측면을 반영한 변수로 윤리 준수, 소비자 기만을, 간접광고의 이용 수단을 반영한 변수로 프로그램 인기성, 매체 친숙도를 선정하였다. 분석 결과, 연예인 관여도와 프로그램 인기성은 유의수준 0.01에서 소비자 구매 의도에 정(+)의 영향을 그리고 소비자 기만은 유의수준 0.01에서 소비자 구매 의도에 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만, 유행 관여도, 노골적 묘사, 노출 정도, 윤리 준수, 매체 친숙도는 통계학적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못한 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구는 선행연구와의 비교를 통해 분석 결과를 해석하였으며, 간접광고와 구매 의도 간의 연관성에 따른 시사점을 제안하고자 하였다.

'블랙컨슈머 행동'과 종사원의 조직일탈행동 : 격려의 조절효과 ('Black Consumer Behavior' and Organizational Misbehavior : The Moderating Effects of encourage)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 서비스 산업에서 고객의 '블랙컨슈머 행동'을 지각한 종사원이 조직에 미치는 부정적 행동인 '조직일탈행동'에 미치는 영향과 조직내 '격려'의 조절효과를 분석을 통해 관리적 시사점의 제공이다. 특히, Adler(1991)는 격려가 개인의 인지적 도식 틀에 긍정적 기대를 주입하는 것으로 인지, 정서, 행동에 긍정적 영향을 미친다고 주장(Dinkmeyer and Losoncy, 1996)하였다. 이러한 Adler(1991) 주장을 근거로 고객의 블랙컨슈머 행동을 지각한 노동자의 반응행동에 대한 격려의 조절효과를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 선행연구를 바탕으로 블랙컨슈머 행동, 조직일탈행동, 격려에 대한 연구모형을 설계하였다. 2015년 11월 15일부터 12월 3일까지 부산지역 호텔, 카지노, 면세점 그리고 외식 서비스 종사원 323명을 대상으로 설문지를 배포하였다. 그 중 279부를 회수(회수율은 86.4%)하였고, 회수된 설문지 중에서 무성의한 응답 또는 무응답이 많은 부실응답 설문지를 제외하여 262부를 최종 분석에 사용하였다. 실증분석 결과 블랙컨슈머 행동은 조직일탈행동에 유의한 영향을 미치고, 격려는 블랙컨슈머 행동 중 과도성과 조직일탈행동에 대한 유의적인 조절효과가 있다는 결과를 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 실증분석 결과를 바탕으로 블랙컨슈머에 노출된 서비스 노동자에 대한 관리적 시사점을 제공하였다.

음식윤리 개요 (An Outline of Food Ethics)

  • 본 총설은 음식윤리의 개요를 식품과학과 산업 분야의 전문인에게 설명하고자 한 것이다. 음식윤리는 음식과 관련된 윤리 또는 윤리적 고려이고, 음식윤리의 핵심어는 생명, 행복, 지혜이다. 음식윤리의 제1원리이자 궁극적인 목적은 인류의 지속가능한 생존이다. 그 목적을 달성하기 위해서는 자연과의 공생, 인간과의 공생, 그리고 음식의 본질적 요소의 충족이 필요하다. 그 필요로부터 생명존중, 자연보전, 속임수나 가짜가 없는 분배의 정의, 소비자 최우선 고려, 절제와 균형, 그리고 안전성 확보의 여섯 가지 정언명령이 산출된다. 정언명령에 상응하는 핵심원리는 생명존중, 환경보전, 정의, 소비자 최우선, 동적 평형, 안전성 최우선이다. 핵심원리 접근법은 윤리문제의 해결에 간단하고 명료하며 실질적인 방법이다. 음식윤리강령 역시 핵심원리를 기반으로 한다.

온라인 쇼핑의 다크패턴에 대한 소비자 감정 및 행동 의도: 질적연구를 통합 접근 (Consumer Sentiment and Behavioral Intentions Regarding Dark Patterns in Online Shopping: Qualitative Research Approach)

  • 사용자 인터페이스(user interface, UI) 기능이 왜곡되어 의도적으로 사용자를 기만하거나 유혹하는 다크패턴으로 등장하고 있다. 다크패턴을 인지하지 못한 소비자는 선택권을 제약받고 이로 인해 불필요한 경제적 피해를 보고 있다. 본 연구에서는 질적연구 방법을 통해 온라인 쇼핑몰의 다크패턴에 대한 소비자들의 다양한 쇼핑 감정 및 다크패턴인지 이후의 행동의도를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구결과 다크패턴 유형에 따라 인지하는 비율은 다소 차이가 있었고, 해당업체에 대한 불신, 사용자 기만, 불쾌함 등의 소비자 감정을 유발하는 것으로 나타났다. 다크패턴 인지 이후의 행동은 아직까지는 적극적으로 해당업체에 항의하여 피해보상을 요구하는 것보다는 재발방지를 위한 다짐, 지인에게 경고 등의 소극적인 행동을 보이는 것으로 나타났다.
