The multiple character of the contact interaction and the collective behavior of elementary microcontacts play a significant role in all the processes occurring in the surface layers, including the failure due to friction and wear. The array of metal spheres compressed between flat plates has been used for simulation of the contact behavior of multiple contact of solids under normal loading. An experimental design has been made providing regular array of the spheres at the same size with different spatial order. Measurement of electrial contact resistance has been made using the equipment providing the adequate accuracy in the range of micro Ohms. The data on electrical contact resistance have been compared with theoretical predictions using the multiple contact model of constriction resistance. The effect of single spots number and array on conductivity of contact has been evaluated.

Graphene, a sigle atomic layered structure of graphite, has drawn many scientific interests for attractive future electronics and optoelectronics beyond silicon-based technology because of its robust physical, optical, and electrical properties. But high metal-graphene contact resistance prevents the successful integration of high speed graphene devices and circuits, although pristine graphene is known to have a novel carrier transport property. Meanwhile, in the recently reported metal-graphene contact studies, there are many attempts to reduce the metal-graphene contact resistance, such as doping and one-dimensional edge contact. However, there is a lack of quantitative analysis of the edge contact scheme through variously designed patterns with different metal contact. We first investigate the effets of edge contact (metal-graphene interface) on the contact resistance in terms of edge pattern design through patterning (photolithography + plasma etching) and electral measurements. Where the contact resistance is determined using the transfer length method (TLM). Finally, we research the role of metal-kind (Palladium, Copper, and Tianium) on the contact resistance through the edge-contacted devices, eventually minimizing contact resistance down to approximately $23{\Omega}{\cdot}{\mu}m$ at room temperature (approximately $19{\Omega}{\cdot}{\mu}m$ at 100 K).

The paper presents a numerical solution to the problem of a hot rigid indenter sliding over a thermoelastic Winkler foundation with a thermal contact resistance at constant speed. It is shown analytically that no steady-state solution can exist for sufficiently high temperature or sufficiently small normal load or speed, regardless of the thermal contact resistance. However the steady state solution may exist in the same situation if the thermal contact resistance is considered. This means that the effect of the large values of temperature difference and small value of force or velocity which occur at no steady state can be lessened due to the thermal contact resistance. When there is no steady state, the predicted transient behavior involves regions of transient stationary contact interspersed with regions of separation regardless of the thermal contact resistance. Initially, the system typically exhibits a small number of relatively large contact and separation regions, but after the initial transient, the trailing edge of the contact area is only established and the leading edge loses contact, reducing the total extent of contact considerably. As time progresses, larger and larger numbers of small contact areas are established, unlit eventually the accuracy of the algorithm is limited by the discretization used.
Understanding the contact between wheel and rail is a starting point in railway vehicle dynamic research area and especially analysis for the contact geometry between wheel and rail is important. On the one hand, the critical speed as the natural characteristics of rolling-stock is generally tested on the roller rig. The geometrical characteristics of the wheel/roller contact on the roller rig are different from these of the general wheel/rail contact because the longitudinal radius of roller is not infinite compared with rail. Thus, in this paper we developed the algorithm to analyze the wheel/roller contact geometry of our roller rig which is constructed now and analyzed the difference between whee/roller contact and wheel/rail contact. In conclusion, we found that the yaw motion of wheelset and the roller radius influence the geometrical contact parameters in wheel flange contact area.

In this paper, efficient and accurate contact search algorithm is proposed for the contact problems by the finite element method. A slave node and a maser contact segment is defined using the side of a finite element on the contact surface. The specific goal is to develop techniques of reducing the nonsmoothness of the contact interactions arising from the finite element discretization of the contact surface. Contact detection is accomplished by monitoring the territory of the slave nodes throughout the calculation for possible penetration of a master surface. To establish the validity of the proposed algorithm, some different process and geometries examples were simulated. Efforts are focused on the error rate that is based on the penetrated area through the simulations fur large deformation with contact surface between deformable bodies. A proposed algorithm offers improvements in contact detection from the simulation results.
On a rotating contact surface of arbitrary shape, the relative velocity of the contact point sliding between the surfaces is computed with the basic geometries of the rotating surfaces, and the acceleration of the contact point between the contact surfaces is computed by using the relative velocity of the contact point. Thus the equation for the acceleration constraint between the contact surfaces in muitibody dynamics is not coupled with the parameters such as the relative velocity of the contact point. In case of the kinematic analysis, the acceleration of the contact point on any specific instant may also be efficiently computed by the present technique because the whole displacement of a full cycle need not be interpolated. Employing a cam-follower mechanism as a verification model, the acceleration of the contact point computed by the present technique is compared with that computed by differentiating the displacement interpolated with a large number of nodal points.

Contact between solid surfaces is one of the most important factors that influence dynamic behavior in micro/nanoscale. Although numerous theories and experimental results on contact behavior have been proposed, a thorough investigation for nanomaterials is still not available owing to technical difficulties. Therefore, molecular dynamics simulation was performed to investigate the contact behavior of nanomaterials, and the application of conventional contact theories to nanoscale was assessed in this work. Particularly, the contact characteristics of cylindrical nanowires were examined via simulation and contact theories. For theoretical analysis, various contact models were utilized and work of adhesion, Hamaker constant and elastic modulus those are required for calculation of the models were obtained from both indentation simulation and tensile simulation. The contact area of the cylindrical nanowire was assessed directly through molecular dynamics simulation and compared with the results obtained from the theories. Determination of the contact area of the nanowires was carried out via simulation by counting each atom, which is within the equilibrium length. The results of the simulation and theoretical calculations were compared, and it was estimated that the discrepancy in the results calculated between the simulation and the theories was less than 10 except in the case of the smallest nanowires. As the result, it was revealed that contact models can be effectively utilized to assess the contact area of nanomaterials.

A precise evaluation of the contact position and the distribution of contact pressure in a wheel-rail interface analysis is one of the most important procedures to predict fatigue life and wear of wheel and rail. This paper presents the analysis result of finite element method(FEM) to investigate how the deformation of a wheelset, which is the assembly of wheel and axle of a railroad vehicle, affect the contact analysis of wheel and rail. 3D-FEM was used to analyze three contact models; a model with only wheel, a model with wheelset, and a model with simplified wheel and rail geometry. The analysis result of the contact position and the distribution of contact pressure are discussed. It is shown that the analysis results of a model with wheelset represent largest value with respect to contact pressure and contact stress. Furthermore, it is found that the distribution of contact pressure and the contact position is highly affected by the deformation of wheel and axle. It is concluded that the deformation of axle should be considered to evaluate the exact contact parameters in a wheel-rail contact analysis.

With the local Hertz deformation on the contact point, the dynamic contact between a high-speed wheel and an elastic beam having a gap is numerically analyzed by solving the whole equations of motion of the wheel and the beam subjected to the contact condition. For the stability of the time integration the velocity and acceleration constraints as well as the displacement constraint are imposed on the contact point. Especially the acceleration contact condition on the gap is formulated, and it is demonstrated that the contact force variation computed by the velocity contact constraint or by the acceleration contact constraint agrees well with that computed by the displacement contact constraint. The numerical examples show that, when the wheel passes on the gap, the solution is governed by the stiffness of the local Hertzian deformation.
