Rebar corrosion effects on structural behavior of buildings

  • Rebar corrosion in concrete is one of the main causes of reduction of service life of reinforced concrete buildings. This paper presents the influence of rebar corrosion on the structural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings subjected to strong earthquake ground motion. Different levels of rebar corrosion scenarios were applied on a typical four story RC frame. The deteriorated conditions as a result of these scenarios include loss in cross-sectional area and loss of mechanical properties of the reinforcement bars, loss in bond strength, and loss in concrete strength and its modulus of elasticity. Dynamic analyses of the frame with different corrosion scenarios are performed with selected strong earthquake ground motion records. The influences of degradation in both concrete and reinforcement on structural behavior are investigated by comparing the various parameters of the frame under different corrosion scenarios with respect to each other. The results show that the progressive deterioration of the frame due to rebar corrosion causes serious structural behavior changes such as change in failure mode. The intensity, propagation time, and extensity of rebar corrosion have very important effects on the level of degradation of steel and concrete, as well as on the earthquake behavior of the structure.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the casting problem and corrosion behavior in two types of HL Hexed abutments of the Steri-Oss system ; gold/plastic coping and gold coping. The anodic Polarization behavior, the galvanic corrosion between abutments and Type III gold alloys, before and after casting were analyzed, and the crevice corrosion of casting samples was analyzed with the CPPT test and the SEM. The results are as follows : 1. Anodic polarization behavior of samples ; Before casting, gold/plastic coping and gold coping was shown to have a similar corrosion pat-terns. Type III casting gold alloy was shown to have a lower corrosion potential and passivation film. Corrosion potential of the case of gold/plastic coping after casting was higher than that of gold coping, but the region of passivation film for gold/plastic coping was smaller than that of gold coping. 2. Galvanic corrosion behavior of samples ; Contact current density between casting gold alloys and gold/plastic before casting was higher than that between gold coping and casting gold alloy Galvanic corrosion of samples after casting was shown to have similar contact current density 3. Crevice corrosion behavior of samples ; Crevice corrosion resistance of casting sample using gold coping was lower than that of cast-ing sample using gold/plastic coping, and a severe corrosion pattern was observed at the abutment-casting gold alloy interface by the SEM.

Corrosion on Steel Surfaces with Sea-Salt Deposition and Artificial Seawater Film

  • The conditions to simulate the atmospheric corrosion behavior in the laboratory were investigated to clarify atmospheric corrosion mechanism of steel material in coastal area, For airborne sea salt and artificial seawater droplet, the various behaviors were observed by optical microscope, The particle size of the dried airborne sea salt was about $20{\mu}m$, and was about 1/10 compared with the artificial seawater droplet. Though the airborne sea salt represented the same behavior as the thermodynamic water absorption, the behavior of the artificial seawater droplet deviated from the results of the thermodynamic calculation, It is concluded that the water absorption behavior is influenced by the particle size of the dried sea salt. The corrosion behaviors of carbon steels were observed under the deposited condition of airborne sea salt and artificial seawater droplet. The corrosion behaviors showed a different trend, indicating that the corrosion behavior depended on the particle size of the dried sea salt. The corrosion in the actual environrnent progressed greater than that in the chamber. Furthermore, the summer showed the greater corrosion than the spring. It is found that the corrosion behaviors are attributed to the influence of the environmental factors.

  • Cavitation can occur in pipes when liquid is moving at high velocity, especially at pittings where the smooth bore of the pipe is interrupted. The effect is usually to produce pitting on the downstream side of the turbulence. However, stress corrosion cracking behavior under cavitation erosion-corrosion was neatly unknown. In this study, therefore, some were investigated of stress corrosion cracking behavior, others were stress corrosion cracking behavior under cavitation erosion-corrosion of water injection. And datas obtained as the results of experiment were compared between the two. Mainresult obtained are as follows: 1) Stress corrosion cracking growth rate of heat affected zone under cavitation erosion-corrosion becomes most rapid, and stress intensity factor $K_1$becomes most high. 2) Stress corrosion cracking growth mechanism by cavitation erosion-corrosion is judgement on the strength of the film rupture model and the tunnel model. 3) The range of potential as passivation of heat affected zone is less noble than that of base metal, and that value is smaller. 4) Corrosion potential under cavitation erosion-corrosion in loaded stress is less noble than that of stress corrosion, and corrosion current density is higher.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the corrosion characteristics between implant fixture and two types of abutment screw ; gold screw, titanium screw. The anodic polarization behavior, the galvanic corrosion behavior, and the crevice corrosion behavior of prepared samples were investigated using potentiostat and scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. Anodic polarization behavior of samples; The primary passivation potential of implant fixture was -420mV, implant abutment was -560mV. titanium screw was -370mV and gold screw was -230mV. All samples were shown to have a high corrosion potential and good formation of passive film. The critical passive current density of gold screw was higher than that of other samples and the sample of gold screw showed a unstable passive film formation at passive region. 2. Galvanic corrosion behavior of samples; Contact current density between implant fixture and titanium screw showed $8.023{\times}10^{-5}C/cm^2$. Contact current density between implant fixture and gold screw showed $5.142{\times}10^{-5}C/cm^2$. 3. Crevice corrosion behavior of samples; The crevice corrosion resistance of sample using titanium screw was higher than that of sample using gold screw, and a severe corrosion morphologies were observed at the fixture-screw interface by the scanning electron microscope.

Corrosion effects on tension stiffening behavior of reinforced concrete

  • The investigation of corrosion effects on the tensile behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members is very important in region prone to high corrosion conditions. In this article, an experimental study concerning corrosion effects on tensile behavior of RC members is presented. For this purpose, a comprehensive experimental program including 58 cylindrical reinforced concrete specimens under various levels of corrosion is conducted. Some of the specimens (44) are located in large tub containing water and salt (5% salt solution); an electrical supplier has been utilized for the accelerated corrosion program. Afterwards, the tensile behavior of the specimens was studied by means of the direct tension tests. For each specimen, the tension stiffening curve is plotted, and their behavior at various load levels is investigated. Average crack spacing, loss of cross-section area due to corrosion, the concrete contribution to the tensile response for different strain levels, and maximum bond stress developed at each corrosion level are studied, and their appropriate relationships are proposed. The main parameters considered in this investigation are: degree of corrosion ($C_w$), reinforcement diameter (d), reinforcement ratio (${\rho}$), clear concrete cover (c), ratio of clear concrete cover to rebar diameter (c/d), and ratio of rebar diameter to reinforcement percentage ($d/{\rho}$).

  • This paper reports the studies on the wear-corrosion behavior of ductile cast iron in the various pH environments. In the variety of pH solutions, corrosion and wear-corrosion loss of GCD 600 were investigated. Also, the anodic polarization test of GCD 600 using potentiostat/galvanostat was carried out. And rubbed surface of GCD 60 using scanning electron micrographs after immersion and wear-corrosion test was examined in the environment of various pH values. The main results are as following In alkali zone, the wear-corrosion loss of GCD 600 increases, but corrosion loss decreases. The unevenness and crack of wear-corrosion surface in neutral zone becomes duller than that in alkali zone. As the corrosive environment is acidified, wear-corrosion behavior of GCD 600 with passing immersion time becomes sensitive.

  • Al-Mg alloy, an open rack vaporizer(ORV) material was reported to be corroded in seawater environments though the ORV material was coupled to thermally sprayed Al-Zn alloy functioning a sacrificial anode. In addition, the corrosion behavior based on the calculated corrosion potential did not match the observed corrosion behavior. Hence, the goal of this study is to get better understanding on Al or Al-Mg alloy coupled to Al-Zn alloy and to provide the calculated corrosion potential representing the corrosion behavior of the ORV material by immersion test, electrochemical tests, and calculation of corrosion and galvanic potential. The corrosion potentials of Al and Al alloys also depended on alloying element as well as surface defects. The corrosion potentials of Al and Al-Mg alloy were changed with time. In the meantime, the corrosion potentials of Al-Zn alloys were not. The corrosion rates of Al-Zn alloys were exponentially increased with zinc contents. The phenomena were explained with the stability of passive film proved by passive current density depending on pH and confirmed by the model proposed by McCafferty. Dissimilar material crevice corrosion (DMCC) test shows that higher content of zinc caused Al-Mg alloy corroded more rapidly, which was due to the fact that higher corrosion rate of Al-Zn makes [$H^+$] and [$Cl^-$] more concentrated within pit solution to corrode Al-Mg alloy. Considering electrochemical reactions within pit as well as bulk in the calculation gives better prediction on the corrosion behavior of Al and Al-Mg alloy as well as the capability of Al-Zn alloy for corrosion protection.

Corrosion Behavior of Ni 200 and Ni-base Alloys in Hot Lithium Molten salt (고온 리튬용융염에서 Ni 200 및 Ni-base 합금의 부식거동)

  • In the development of the advanced spent fuel management process based on the molten salt technology, it is essential to choose the optimum material for the process equipment handling molten salt. Corrosion behavior of Ni 200 and Ni-base alloys in molten salt of LiCl-$Li_2$O under oxidation atmosphere was investigated in the temperature range of $650~800^{\circ}C$ for 24~312 hrs. The order of corrosion rate was Ni 200 > Inconel 690 > Inconel 601 > Inconel 600. Inconel 600 alloy showed the highest corrosion resistance among the examined alloys, but Ni 200 exhibited the highest corrosion rate. Corrosion products of Inconel 600 and Inconel 601 were $Cr_2$$O_3$ and $NiFe_2$$O_4$. In case of Inconel 690, a single layer of $CrO_2$$O_3$ was formed in the early stage of corrosion and an outer layer of $NiFe_2$O$_4$ and inner layer of $Cr_2$$O_3$ were formed with increase of corrosion time. Inconel 600 showed local corrosion behavior and Inconel 601, 690 showed uniform corrosion behavior.

Corrosion Behavior of TiN Ion Plated Steel Plate(III)-Effects of Ni and Ti interlayer thickness- (TiN 이온 플레이팅한 강판의 내식성에 관한 연구(III)-Ni 및 Ti 하지코팅두께의 영향-)

  • The effect of interlayer coating thickness of Ni and Ti on corrosion behavior was studied for TiN ion plat-ed steel plate. Interlayer coating was carried out in a single and bi-layer to a various thickness combination prior to final TiN coating. Corrosion behavior was evaluated by anodic polarization test in 1N H2SO4 as well as salt spray test. Ni interlayer coating was effectived in reducing corrosion current density of active region and Ti interlayer coating over Ni coating reduced the anodic corrosion current density by an order of 4 with increasing the thickness of Ti up to$ 3\mu\textrm{m}$. The improvement of corrosion resistance by Ni/Ti interlayer coating was attributed to the effective prevention of penetration of active corrosion agent resulting from the inherent corrosion resistance of Ni and Ti. Putting corrosion behavior was observed from salt spray test result for all specimens and corrosion resistance at salt atmosphere was enhanced with increasing Ni and Ti thickness, Cor-lay TiN coating was spalled out by the generation of corrosion products.
