  • Paneling building facades is one of the essential procedures in building construction. Traditionally, it has been an easy task of simply projecting paneling patterns drawn in drawing boards onto 3d building facades. However, as many organic or curved building shapes are designed and constructed in modern architectural practices, the traditional one-to-one projection is becoming obsolete for the building types of the kind. That is primarily because of the geometrical discrepancies between 2d drawing boards and 3d curved building surfaces. In addition, curved compound surfaces are often utilized to accommodate the complicated spatial programs, building codes, and zoning regulations or to achieve harmonious geometrical relationships with neighboring buildings in highly developed urban contexts. The use of the compound surface apparently makes the traditional paneling pattern projection more challenging. Various mapping technics have been introduced to deal with the inabilities of the projection methods for curved facades. The mapping methods translate geometries on a 2d surface into a 3d building façade at the same topological locations rather than relying on Euclidean or Affine projection. However, due to the intrinsic differences of the planar 2d and curved 3d surfaces, the mapping often comes with noticeable distortions of the paneling patterns. Thus, this paper proposes a practical method of drawing paneling patterns directly on a curved compound surface utilizing Geodesic, which is faithful to any curved surface, to minimize unnecessary distortions.

  • To investigate the surface effects on vibration of embedded circular curved nanosize beams, nonlocal elasticity model is used in combination with surface properties including surface elasticity, surface tension and surface density for modeling the nano scale effect. The governing equations are determined via the energy method. Analytically Navier method is utilized to solve the governing equations for simply supported at both ends. Solving these equations enables us to estimate the natural frequency for circular curved nanobeam including Winkler and Pasternak elastic foundations. The results determined are verified by comparing the results by available ones in literature. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocal parameter, surface properties, Winkler and Pasternak elastic foundations and opening angle of circular curved nanobeam on the natural frequency are successfully studied. The results reveal that the natural frequency of circular curved nanobeam is significantly influenced by these effects.

  • Generally, curved surfaces of ship hull are deformed by flame bending (line heating), multi-press forming, and die-less forming method. The forming methods generate the required in-plane/bending strain or displacement on the flat plate to make the curved surface. Multi-press forming imposes the forced displacements on the flat plate by controlling the position of each pressing points based upon the shape difference between the unfolded flat plate and the curved object shape. The flat plate has been obtained from the unfolding system that is independent of the ship CAD. Apparently, the curved surface and the unfolded-flat surface are expressed by different coordinate systems. Therefore, one of the issues is to find a registration of the unfolded surface and the curved shape for the purpose of minimum amount of forming works by comparing the two surfaces. This paper presents an efficient algorithm to get an optimized registration of two different surfaces in the multi-press forming of ship hull plate forming. The algorithm is based upon the ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm. The algorithm consists of two iterative procedures including a transformation matrix and the closest points to minimize the distance between the unfolded surface and curved surfaces. Thereby the algorithm allows the minimized forming works in ship-hull forming.

  • Surfaces of many engineering structures, specially, those of ships and airplanes are commonly fabricated as doubly curved shapes as well as singly curved surfaces to fulfill functional requirements. Given a three dimensional design surface, the first step in the fabrication process is unfolding or planar development of this surfaces into a planar shape so that the manufacturer can determine the initial shape of the flat plate. Also a good planar development enables the manufacturer to estimate the strain distribution required to form the design shape. In this paper, an algorithm for optimal approximated development of a general curved surface, including both singly and doubly curved surface is developed in the sense that the strain energy from its planar development to the design surface is minimized, subjected to some constraints. The development process is formulated into a constrained nonlinear programming problem, which is on basis of deformation theory and finite element. Constraints are subjected to characteristics of the fabrication method. Some examples on typical surfaces and the practical ship surfaces show the effectiveness of this algorithm.

  • This study is normal orientation technology of slit coating equipment to improve the quality of curved displays. Currently, the demand for curved displays is increasing significantly due to advantages such as screen immersion or design in various industries. Accordingly, changes in the display coating process are essential. In the curved display coating process, unlike the existing flat coating process, the nozzle must be rotated along the curvature of the curved surface to spray the coating solution. The coating solution must be applied while maintaining a uniform thickness. If the thickness of the coating liquid applied to the target surface is non-uniform, the quality of the product may be degraded such as image quality deterioration and light spreading. This paper presents technology and experimental results for keeping the nozzle of slit coating equipment perpendicular to the curved surface and is expected to contribute to the quality improvement of curved displays.

  • Surfaces of many engineering structures, especially, those of ships are commonly made out of either single- or double-curved surfaces to meet functional requirements. The first step in the fabrication process of a three-dimensional design surface is unfolding or flattening the surface, otherwise known as planar development, so that manufacturers can determine the initial flat plate which is required to form the design shape. In this paper, an algorithm for optimal approximated development of a general curved surface, including both single- and double-curved surfaces, is established by minimizing the strain energy of deformation from its planar development to the design surface. The unfolding process is formulated into a constrained nonlinear programming problem, based on the deformation theory and finite element. Constraints are subjected to the characteristics of the fabrication method. And the design surface, or the curved shell plate is subdivided by automatic mesh generation.

  • In this study, the blasting nozzle for surface treatment of the curved surface of parts in power plant industry was designed and the cleaning performance was examined through the compressible flow analysis. At this time, the outlet of the curved nozzle was designed as a curved surface along the surface of the part. After the nozzle was made by 3-D printing, the abrasive was sprayed on the surface of the cylindrical specimen and the cleaning performance test was performed. The effective cleaning area obtained after the analysis was similar to the size and shape of the effective cleaning area obtained after the experiment. From this, the validity and effectiveness of the curved nozzle design was confirmed.

  • The use of glass applied to curved surface as a building material has increased in recent years. However, the curved glass is difficult to guarantee the quality in process of making it into double glazing, So it is vulnerable to thermal breakage. In this paper, when the glass broken during experiments, surface temperature difference on curved double glazing was compared to that of heat strengthened glass and flat glass. As a result, flat single glass was broken at temperature difference of 100~140 degrees but curved double glazing was broken at that of 40~60 degrees. Therefore, curved double glazing is more vulnerable than flat double glazing to thermal breakage, so it should be considered when applied to building facade.

  • The present paper deals with the free vibration and buckling problem with consideration of surface properties of circular nanobeams and nanoarches. The Gurtin-Murdach theory is used for investigating the surface effects parameters including surface tension, surface density and surface elasticity. Both linear and nonlinear elastic foundation effect are considered on the circular curved nanobeam. The analytically Navier solution is employed to solve the governing equations. It is obviously detected that the natural frequencies of a curved nanobeams is substantially influenced by the elastic foundations. Besides, it is revealed that by increasing the thickness of curved nanobeam, the influence of surface properties and elastic foundations reduce to vanished, and the natural frequency and critical buckling load turns into to the corresponding classical values.

  • This paper describes about the simulation and the experimental results of optical cavity with curved mirror surface and vertical mirror surface to improve the light intensity and efficiency of the optical sensors. When we use the vertical mirror surface, the distribution of light reached to the filter surface of detector shows an elliptical shape. Whereas, the curved mirror surface focuses the light into circular shape. Therefore, due to focusing effects in case of using curved mirror surface, the light intensity per unit area has been improved. Consequently, the output voltage of gas sensor has been expected to increase. Based upon the simulation, the experiment of gas sensor has been conducted with $CO_2$ gas from 0ppm to 2,500 ppm at 250 ppm step and $25^{\circ}C$, 45%R.H. ambient. The output voltage of gas sensor that has a curved mirror surface increases approximately 200 mV than that of vertical mirror surface.
