The construction of underground structures such as power supply lines, communication lines, utility tunnels has significantly increased worldwide for improving urban aesthetics ensuring citizen safety, and efficient use of underground space. Those underground structures are usually constructed along with vertical cylindrical shafts to facilitate their construction and maintenance. When constructing a vertical shaft through the open-cut method, the walls are mostly designed to be flexible, allowing a certain level of displacement. The earth pressure applied to the flexible walls acts as an external force and its accurate estimation is essential for reasonable and economical structure design. The earth pressure applied to the flexible wall is closely interrelated to the displacement of the surrounding ground. This study simulated stepwise excavation for constructing a cylindrical vertical shaft through a centrifugal model experiment. One quadrant of the axisymmetric vertical shaft and the ground were modeled, and ground excavation was simulated by shrinking the vertical shaft. The deformation occurring on the entire ground during the excavation was continuously evaluated through digital image analysis. The digital image analysis evaluated complex ground deformation which varied with wall displacement, distance from the wall, and ground depth. When the ground deformation data accumulate through the method used in this study, they can be used for developing shaft wall models in future for analyzing the earth pressure acting on them.
It is known that the response of piles is affected by the shape of pile as well as soil conditions. In order to investigate the characteristics of the axial responses and bearing capacities of non-displacement tapered and cylindrical piles in sands, 12 model pile load tests using a calibration chamber were conducted on model tapered and cylindrical piles, which were specially manufactured to measure the base and shaft load capacities independently. Results of the model tests showed that the shaft load of tapered piles continuously increased with pile settlement, whereas the shaft load of cylindrical piles reached ultimate values at a settlement equal to 4% of pile diameter. Therefore, taper piles have greater shaft loads than cylindrical one at the same settlement. It is also observed that the total load capacity of tapered piles is lower than cylindrical piles for dense sand but is greater than that of cylindrical piles for medium sand. The ultimate unit base resistance of tapered piles was greater than that of cylindrical piles for lateral earth pressure ratio greater than 0.4, and the shaft resistance was greater than that of cylindrical piles irrespective of lateral earth pressure ratio.
It is well known that earth pressure on the cylindrical open caisson and cylindrical retaining wall of a shaft is less than that at-rest and in plane strain condition because of the horizontal and vertical arching effects due to wall displacement and stress relief. In order to examine the earth pressure distribution of a cylindrical wall, model tests were performed in dry sand for the care of constant wall displacement with depth. Model test apparatus which can control wall displacement, wall friction, and wall shape ratio was developed. The effects of various factors that influence earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall of a shaft were investigated.

We have designed and fabricated the slidacs type automatic voltage regulator(SVR) that is able to control the output voltage continuously according to load variation. Especially, the frictions between the surface of contact of the slidacs coils and the output wire moving shaft arc reduced by modifying the mechanical configuration of surface of contact of slidacs from the conventional sliding one into the proposed rotary one composed of cylindrical bearing. Thus, SVR using cylindrical bearing proposed in this study has less noise than the conventional one owing to the reduction of friction, and its breakdown ratio caused by the abrasion of contact materials is reduced as well. We have designed U motor driving circuit for controlling the output wire moving shaft, and introduced the digital control method using the pulse width modulation(PWM) output for controlling DC motor.
Various prediction methods for the bearing capacity of helical piles have been introduced with consideration of both the steel shaft and the helix plates attached to the shaft. In this paper, three representative methods, that is, individual bearing method, cylindrical shear method, and torque correlation method are discussed and compared to each other. The prediction methods were verified by comparing with a series of loading test results performed on moderate-size helical piles from the companion paper. As a result, the measured bearing capacity is greater than the bearing capacity predicted by the cylindrical shear method, but smaller than that of the individual bearing method. In addition, the bearing capacity predicted by the torque correlation method is in good agreement with the measured bearing capacity.

At-rest and active earth pressure in plane strain condition have been applied to the design of cylindrical retaining walls. But many researchers have indicated that the earth pressure on the cylindrical retaining walls would be smaller than in plane strain condition due to wall deformation and stress relief. In this paper, the distribution of earth pressure acting on diaphragm wall of a shaft in dry sand was predicted by using the convergence confinement method and model test was performed to verify the estimated values. Test results showed that the earth pressure acting on the diaphragm wall of a shaft was expected to be 1.1~1.5 times larger than active earth pressure of plane strain condition and 0.7~0.9 times less than at-rest earth pressure.
When constructing a cylindrical vertical shaft through the open-cut method, the walls are generally designed to be temporary flexible walls that allow a certain level of displacement. The earth pressure applied to the flexible walls acts as an external force and its accurate estimation is essential for reasonable and economical structure design. The earth pressure applied to the flexible wall is closely interrelated to the plastic deformation of the surrounding ground. This study simulated a stepwise excavation for constructing a cylindrical vertical shaft through a centrifugal model test and evaluated the continuous deformation behaviors of the surrounding ground through digital image analysis.
The earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall in cohesionless soils is different from that on the retaining wall in plane strain condition due to three dimensional arching effect. Accurate estimation of earth pressure is required for the design of vertical cylindrical retaining wall. Failure modes of the ground behind vertical shaft are dependent on ground in-situ stress conditions. Failure modes are actually divided into two modes of cylindrical failure mode and funnel-shaped mode with truncated cone surface. Several researchers have attempted to estimate the earth pressure on cylindrical wall for each failure mode, but they have some limitations. In this paper, several equations for estimating the earth pressure on cylindrical wall in cohesionless soils are investigated and new formulations for two failure modes are suggested. It rationally takes into account the overburden pressure, wall friction, and force equilibriums on sliding surface.
Automobiles and systems requiring high gear ratios and high power densities generally use worm gears. In particular, as worm gears have a small volume and self-locking function, home appliances such as refrigerators and washers consist of worm gears. We can classify worm gears into cylindrical worms and rectangular worms. According to the AGMA standard, there are four types of cylindrical worms, ZA, ZN, ZK and ZI, depending on the machining of the worm shaft. It is preferable to use a ZI-type worm shaft, which is a combination of a worm wheel having an involute helical tooth surface and a conjugate tooth surface. However, in many cases, industries mostly use ZK, ZN, and ZA worm shafts because of the ease of processing. This paper presents numerical approaches to produce ZI and ZA worm surfaces and worm wheel. For the analysis of the transmission error of a worm gear system, this study (1) generates surface profile functions of ZI profile worm gear and worm shaft based on the common rack theory, (2) adopts the Newton-Raphson method for the analysis of the gear surface contact condition, and (3) presents and compares the corresponding transmission errors of ZI and ZA worm gears.

In this paper, we designed and fabricated the magnetic bearings and built-in type cylindrical capacitive transducers for improving the vibration characteristics of rotating shaft. The eddy current and magnetic field from the electromagnet of the bearing don't affect the measuring signal of the capacitive type transducers so that it is possible to locate the capacitive sensor plates around the magnetic bearing poles and can improve the spillover problem which is induced by the noncollocation of the sensors and actuators. According to the sensitivity calibration schemes using a X-Y table, the cylindrical capacitive transducers have a good linearities in the .+-.70.mu.m range from the geometric center of the sensor plates. The measured results also show high displacement sensitivities of the sensors. According to the performance test of the magnetic bearing which is controlled by the analog PD controllers, we found that the built-in capacitive transducer system successfully measures the journal displacement in the magnetic field and therefore the magnetic bearing system supports the rotating shaft up to 12,000 rpm.
