  • IEEE 802.15.4 has been emerging as the popular choice for various monitoring and control applications. In this paper, a fault management system for DC power-lines has been designed using IEEE 802.15.4, in order to monitor DC power-lines in real time, and to rapidly detect faults and shut off the line where such faults occur. Numbers were allocated for each node and unslotted CSMA-CA method of IEEE 802.15.4 was used, the performance of which was analyzed by a simulation. For such purpose, a total of 60 bits of the control data consisting of 16 bits of the current, 16 bits of the amplitude, 28 bits of the terminal state data were sent out, and the packet transfer rate and the transmission delay time of the fault management system for DC power-lines were measured and analyzed. When the traffic load was 330 packets per second or lower, the average delay time was shown to be shorter than 0.02 seconds, and when the traffic load was 260 packets per second or lower, the packet transfer rate was shown to be 99.99% or higher. Therefore, it was confirmed that the stringent condition of US Department of Energy (DOE) could be satisfied if the traffic load was 260 packets per second or lower, The results of this study can be utilized as basic data for the establishment of the fault management system for DC power-lines using IEEE 802.15.4.

  • In this paper a modular high performance MV-to-LV rectifier based on a cascaded H-bridge rectifier is presented. The proposed rectifier can directly connect to the medium voltage levels and provide a low-voltage and highly-stable DC interface with the consumer applications. The input stage eliminates the necessity for heavy and bulky step-down transformers. It corrects the input power factor and maintains the voltage balance among the individual DC buses. The second stage includes the high frequency parallel-output DC/DC converters which prepares the galvanic isolation, regulates the output voltage, and attenuates the low frequency voltage ripple ($2f_{line}$) generated by the first stage. The parallel-output converters can work in interleaving mode and the active load-current sharing technique is utilized to balance the load power among them. The detailed analysis for modeling and control of the proposed structure is presented. The validity and performance of the proposed topology is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • A new automatic generation control (AGC) signal transmission format will be adopted in the new energy management system (EMS) that KEPCO is planning to install for managing and operating the power system efficiently under the deregulation environment. Therefore, it is necessary for the power plants to make the AGC processing logic fit the new AGC signal flow format. In this work, we compare the new signal transmission scheme with the conventional one in view of its effect to the signal flow in the distributed control systems (DCS) that ale equipped in power plants to handle AGC operation. Then we propose a basic logic configuration for DCS that can be used with the new signal format. In the design of the configuration, some practical issues that should be discussed for the proper operation of the plants are considered.

  • In this paper, the power management module of wireless sensor node is designed and fabricated utilizing RF energy from reader antenna of commercial RFID system, which is mainly categorized in the energy harvesting. For this, the rectenna and the high efficient boost converter is designed to get the DC power from RF power for the charging the battery. When the RF power from RFID reader antenna is 1.2[W], the DC power of 3.1[mW] at the distance of 1[m] and 1[mW] at 5.5[m] are obtained. Considering the connection to the battery, the boost converter for enhancing the conversion efficiency is designed. The conversion efficiency at the distance of 4[m] is 79.3[%] and the harvested power is 1.36[mW] which is actually used for the charging the battery. This value is available in the wireless sensor networking.

  • In this paper, we evaluated the effect of a silica-based Anti-Reflection(AR) coating for PV modules. The coating technique can be easily applied to large-scale PV modules at room temperature with improvements of the optical properties that is qualified by the optical transmission measurements on the coated cover glass of the modules. The power improvement of the large-scale PV modules shows the increasing about 2.4% at standard condition of the coating technique on average. To improve the AR coating effect of the PV modules, we have characterized the individual PV modules by the measurements of DC power output, modified performance ratio(PRm) and the regression. The results show that the significant improvements of the AR coating effect are 6.4%, 5.5% and 4.5% of increasing of the performances by using the measurements of DC power output, modified performance ratio(PRm) and the regression, respectively.

  • In the island areas where system connection with the commercial power grid is difficult, it is quite important to find a method to efficiently manage energy produced with independent microgrids. In this paper, a prosumer management system for P2P power transaction was realized through the testing the power meter and the response rate of the collected data for the power produced in the small-scale microgrids in which hybrid models of solar power and wind power were implemented. The power network of the microgrid prosumer was composed of mesh structure and the P2P power transaction was tested through the power meter and DC power transmitter in the off-grid sites which were independently constructed in three places. The measurement values of the power meter showed significant results of voltage (average): 380V + 0.9V, current (average): + 0.01A, power: 1000W (-1W) with an error range within ±1%. Stabilization of the server was also confirmed with the response rate of 0.32 sec. for the main screen, 2.61 sec. for the cumulative power generation, and 0.11 sec for the power transaction through the transmission of 50 data in real time. Therefore, the proposed system was validated as a P2P power transaction system that can be used as an independent network without transmitted by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).
