  • In the present study, a CFD/DSMC hybrid method performed by a coupled analysis between the CFD method and the DSMC method was developed to obtain the flow information on the rarefied gas flows effectively. Flow simulations around the high speed vehicles on the transition flow regimes were conducted by using the developed method. The FRESH-FX vehicle made of cone and cylinder shapes was considered for the simulations. The results of the hybrid method were compared with the results of the pure CFD and the pure DSMC method to confirm the reliability and efficiency of the hybrid method. It was found that the gradient and the intensity of the shock waves were weakened due to the relatively low density on the transition flow regime. It was confirmed that the results of the hybrid analysis were different to those of the pure CFD analysis and almost identical to those of the pure DSMC analysis. In addition, the computational time of the hybrid method was reduced than that of the pure DSMC method. As a result, it was obtained that the validity and the efficiency of the CFD/DSMC hybrid method.

  • DSMC method is now widely accepted CFD approach to compute and simulate the nozzle plume in rarefied regimes. In this study, using SMILE(Statistical Modeling in Low-density Environment) code which was developed in ITAM, Russia and coded using DSMC method, the internal flow of the Rothe micronozzle was simulated. Moreover, to show the validity of the SMILE code, the centerline temperatures according to the Reynold's number were compared with the ones obtained by the Rothe's experiment.

  • Using analytical method, intrinsic absorption and scattering attenuation was lately separated from total quality factor $(Q^{-1}_t)$ on the seismic data of Korean Peninsula. However, we should use numerical method rather than the analytical method to consider depth dependent structure of scattering. The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, as a kind of the numerical method, is good option due to its extended availability from 1 to 3-dimensional model; but there is few study to use it. In this paper, we introduced the analytical method and the DSMC method, and compared the results of the two analysis applied to the isotropic scattering model. While the scattering attenuation coefficients $(\eta_s)$ are identical, the intrinsic absorption coefficients $(\eta_i)$ for the analytical method are larger than those for DSMC method and have large errors. In addition, the $(Q^{-1}_t)$ by the previous studies show closer to DSMC method than analytical method.

  • The paper describes hypersonic rarefied flow of helium and nitrogen over a flat plate by the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. The effect of incomplete accommodation and plate thickness are analyzed and the computational results are compared with wind tunnel test data. Also computational aspects of the method are outlined.

  • The satellite payloaded on the 2nd stage of KSLV-I is planned to perform CCAM(Contamination and Collision Avoidance Maneuver) not to collide with KM(Kick Motor). At the moment, the satellite should pass through low density environment not to be contaminated by KM plume due to residual thrust. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the flow field of KM plume by residual thrust. In this paper, DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte-Carlo) method, which is widely accepted to simulate in rarefied regime, is used to compute the density field of KM plume by residual thrust and the result of DSMC simulation was compared with that of FLUENT to validate it.

  • The pumping characteristics of a disk-type drag pump (DTDP) from free molecular flow region to the slip flow region are calculated by the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. In this study, the pumping performance is studied numerically for several channel depths. The interaction between molecules is modeled by variable hard-sphere (VHS). The no time counter method is used as a collision sampling technique. The clearance between rotor and stator is considered an effect on performance. Spiral channels are cut on both upper and lower sides of rotating disks, and stationary disks are planar. A three-dimensional DSMC method for the analysis of steady rarefied flows in a single-stage DTDP has been developed. Velocity and density fields were obtained by the DSMC simulation in the rotor. The present experimental data in the outlet pressure range of $7.5{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}4$ Torr were compared with the DSMC results in the single-stage DTDP. Comparison between the experimental data and DSMC results showed good agreement.

  • A method of describing the rovibrational energy transitions and coupled chemical reactions in the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) calculations is constructed for $H(^2S)+H_2(X^1{\Sigma}_g)$ and $He(^1S)+H_2(X^1{\Sigma}_g)$. First, the state-specific total cross sections for each rovibrational states are proposed to describe the state-resolved elastic collisions. The state-resolved method is constructed to describe the rotational-vibrational-translational (RVT) energy transitions and coupled chemical reactions by these state-specific total cross sections and the rovibrational state-to-state transition cross sections of bound-bound and bound-free transitions. The RVT energy transitions and coupled chemical reactions are calculated by the state-resolved method in various heat bath conditions without relying on a macroscopic properties and phenomenological models of the DSMC. In nonequilibrium heat bath calculations, the state-resolved method are validated with those of the master equation calculations and the existing shock-tube experimental data. In bound-free transitions, the parameters of the existing chemical reaction models of the DSMC are proposed through the calibrations in the thermochemical nonequilibrium conditions. When the bound-free transition component of the state-resolved method is replaced by the existing chemical reaction models, the same agreement can be obtained except total collision energy model.

  • The flow in low-density plumes expanding into a region of finite pressure shows a quite different behavior from that observed in low-density plumes expanding into a vacuum. The flow structure in the plume varies depending on applied ambient and stagnation chamber conditions. In the present study, the direct simulation Monte-Carlo (DSMC) method based on molecular gas dynamics is employed in the analysis of low-density gas flows expanding through a small converging/diverging nozzle. Special attention has been paid to the effect of non-zero ambient and stagnation pressures on the flow structure which has rarely been studied using the DSMC method.

  • To study the plume effects in the rarefied region, the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method is usually adopted because the plume field usually contains the entire range of flow regime from the near-continuum in the vicinity of nozzle exit through transitional state to free molecular at far field region from the nozzle. The objective of this study is to investigate the behaviors of a small monopropellant thruster plume in the rarefied region numerically using DSMC method. To deduce accurate results efficiently, the preconditioned scheme is introduced to calculate continuum flow fields inside thruster to predict nozzle exit properties used for inlet conditions of DSMC method. By combining these two methods, the rarefied flow characteristics of plume such as strong nonequilibrium near nozzle exit, large back flow region, etc, can be investigated.
