  • The current study aimed to develop the design principles for maker programs using virtual reality and apply them in developing a simulation mobile application. First, through collecting and analyzing the relevant studies and cases eight design principles with four components were derived. Then, these initial design components and principles were revised and improved in accordance with evaluations of an expert panel composed of three professors/researchers, two teachers, and two IT industrial experts. Based on the revised design principles, a VR simulation app for maker education was developed and evaluated on whether the principles were properly applied to the app development by the expert panel. The finalized eight design principles, as a research outcome, can contribute to the design and development of various types of educational programs that can replace the actual making experience even in educational fields where it is difficult to build maker spaces or provide materials and equipment. In the near future, empirical studies are expected to develop customized maker programs considering the characteristics, levels, and needs of students and verify their educational effectiveness.

  • The purpose of this study is to comprehend how traditional design theory, 'design elements and principles' have been applied to space design, taking interior designs of restaurants as the subjects of the research. Furthermore, this study intends to provide practical help to the restaurant designers and students who major in interior design, by summarizing the applications case by case. For the analysis, 10 restaurant projects were selected to which 'design elements and principles' were well applied. In order to widen the scope of application cases, this study selected four Korean restaurant projects, and three US and Japan restaurant projects, respectively. Through the analysis, it was found that many unexpected results can be produced when various elements composing a space are combined together, including not only two-dimensional elements such as plane and color, texture, and pattern but also three-dimensional elements and architectural elements composing interior space. Moreover, I became to have confidence that 'design elements and principles' would sustain the value in most design parts including interior design in the future as well.

  • Creative application of exaggerated measurements and origami principles can make clothing design unique and formative clothing design possible. There have been many techniques applied to formative clothing design, but, in particular, origami principles, in company with exaggerated measurements, play a significant role in enlightening clothing uniqueness and formativeness in contemporary fashion design. The primary purpose of this study was to make a new suggestion for the production of high value-added fashion by reviewing and synthesizing exaggerated measurements and origami principles. Diverse relevant designs were retrieved through a comprehensive literature review on topic-related theses, books, and fashion media from 2000 and significant cases were retrieved from Rick Owens, Damir Doma & Haider Ackermann out of 2008 & 2009 F/W collections. From a comprehensive review, the following formative characteristics of exaggerated measurements and origami principles applied to clothing design were identified: (1) expandability, (2) fluidity, (3) deconstruction, and (4) irregularity. In addition, the following value of exaggerated measurements and origami principles applied to clothing design were identified: (1) alterability, (2) form potentiality, and (3) contradistinctive formativeness.

  • Various kinds of digital contents developers are recognizing the importance of interface design, but they have no integrated and arranged interface design principles, so are facing difficulties in applying them. About the interface of web-site which is one field of the digital contents, there came out necessary principles about the interface design to some extent by the active studying activities in and out of the country. However, the researchers are proposing various principles, so it is difficult to apply which design principle in what situation. To this, this study looks into the common design principles while comparing and analyzing the design principles of Donald A. Norman, Jakob Nielson, Jeff Johnson and Manna Sjoberg. Based on this, we suggest 10 interface design principles to improve the functionality and aesthetics of the digital contents.

  • Although astronomical observation has various educational effects and values, studies conducted in the context of earth science education have been relatively insufficient compared with other fields. In addition, few studies have been conducted on systematic design principles development guiding teachers in the application of practical astronomical observation education. In this study, we attempted to develop design principles for astronomical observation education programs for K-12 students and applied the program to the classes. The initial design principles were derived through literature research and revised through validation processes by eight experts. The final principles were confirmed based on the usability evaluation of two high school teachers, and they included 11 design principles and 27 detailed guidelines. In addition, an astronomical observation education program consisting of eight lessons was designed by applying the final design principle. This program was applied to after-school classes in high school, the responses of participating students were investigated. We anticipate our design principles can be used as a criterion for systematic design of various types of observation activities, including outdoor observations.

  • New design principles nad necessary conditions for a mechanical system have been suggested to be kept in the design process using a washing machine transmission as a model. The necessary conditions are funcitnal requirement condition and spatial arrangement condition. The design principles to satisfy the necessary conditions are the principle of sequence and the principle of expansion. Decision sequence for state variables and design varibles of various mechanicla elements have been formulated. New automatic design program for washing machine transmission has been developed observing the necessary conditions and design principles investigated in this study. It was verified to be very effective to follow the design conditions, principles nad formulated decision sequence in mechanical system design process.

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate Seoullo 7017 based on Universal Design (UD) principles and guidelines. To derive UD principles applicable to the site context, we used the 2017 Seoul Universal Design Guideline and assessment index provided by the Universal Design Research Center and established 11 evaluation criteria. With respect to research methods, a literature review and on-site field survey were applied, through which we derived UD principles and evaluation criteria to identify UD problems. The 11 evaluation criteria consist of pedestrian space, facilities, access, main entrance, parking lots, trails, restrooms, convenience facilities, information facilities, rest areas, and playgrounds, and these were associated with UD principles for evaluation. As a result, the main entrance had the highest UD score, while parking lots had the lowest in terms of equity, safety, simplicity, and accessibility. Restrooms received a lower UD score because of poor conditions of security and alert systems. Rest areas were found to be uncomfortable for disabled people. With respect to the internal trails, we found the lack of braille block and irregular placement of planting pots made blind people uncomfortable when walking. In terms of UD principles, flexibility received the highest score, followed by amenity, equity, simplicity, tolerance, accessibility, and safety. Flexibility received the highest score, owing to the provision of proper information about convenience facilities and trails, while safety received the lowest, based on poor access to parking lots, inadequate paving materials and colors, and a lack of 24-hour security systems. We hope this research contributes to improving the universal design, so that people are not discriminated against in the use of the park in terms of age, sex, or physical disability. We expect the study to help facilitate empirical studies to verify UD principles and provide improved quality of UD for Seoullo 7017.

  • The aim of this study is to discover the organic expression principles of the 20C. Architecture. As a result, first, the organic expression principles was organised in six categories, a. naturalism b. neo-naturalism, c. realism, d. abstractionism, e. regionalism, f. functionalism. Second, among the organic expression principles, the naturalism, the neo-naturalism and the abstractionism were the most dominant organic expression principles of the 20C. Architecture. Third, from 1960, the functionalism have become one of the most dominant organic expression of the 20C. Architecture.

  • This paper first examines the notion of software and the importance of software development and then presents twelve fundamental principles for software architecture design as the key enabling technology for effective software development. This paper divides design steps into four groups, i.e. analyzing the problem, deciding architecture modeling methods, architecture design process and architecture evaluation. Then it identifies the principles within and across the various steps of software architecture design and explains their roles.
