  • Although consumer needs for better products force manufactures to put emphasis on design, often development of a product has been done without the formal process to consider consumer needs. In order to identify the implicit needs of customers and the areas of potential demand on a product, several analysis scheme such as QFD (Quality Function Deployment) has been developed. QFD, also known as the House of Quality, is the efficient tool ever created to tie product and service design decisions directly to customer wants and needs, i.e. VoC (Voice of Customer) To utilize this tool on a product design, first of all, the consumers attributes and the engineering characteristics must be exactly investigated. However there were only few studies about them on shoe design. Hence in this paper we developed an innovative framework for shoes design based on QFD. As a result, we uncovered 29 dominant human satisfaction dimensions as the consumers attributes for customer-oriented quality evaluation of a comfortable shoes. Here, 29 human satisfaction dimensions for a shoe design were identified as the dimensions that represent the human sensitivity and psychological feeling on comfortable shoes. Also, we proposed 60 human interface elements as the engineering characteristics. The relationships between human satisfaction dimensions and human interface elements were investigated. This study will help the designers and manufacturers clarify the conceptual and abstract aspect of the design evaluation by proposing a more systematic and process-oriented method.

  • This study investigated the ultimate lateral load capacity of shear walls constructed with several types of structural foam sheathing. Sixteen tests were conducted and the results were compared to the published design values commutated by the manufactures for each test series. The sheathing products included 12.7 mm (1/2 in) SI-Strong, 25.4 mm (1 in) SI-Strong, 12.7 mm (1/2 in) R-Max Thermasheath, and 2 mm (0.078 in) ThermoPly Green. The structural foam sheathing was attached per the manufacturers' specification to one side of the wood frame for each wall tested. Standard 12.7 mm (1/2 in) gypsum wallboard was screwed to the opposite side of the frame. Simpson HDQ8 tie-down anchors were screwed to the terminal studs at each end of the wall and anchored to the base of the testing apparatus. Both monotonic and cyclic testing following ASTM E564 and ASTM E2126, respectively, were considered. Results from the monotonic tests showed an 11 to 27 percent smaller capacity when compared to the published design values. Likewise, the test results from the cyclic tests showed a 24 to 45 percent smaller capacity than the published design values and did not meet the seismic performance design criteria computation.

The various processes and levels of in-formation activities: Among the process of collection analysis and distribution the collec-tion process showed a good acheivement whereas the distribution whereas the distribution didn't. In levels of the systematic activities the acceptance of support and the utility of supported instruments the first indicated a high degree whereas the second showed lowest. b. The correlationship among subvariables : There was a significant correlation between the collection and the analysis process. The systematic activities revealed close relation-ship with the analysis process and the accept-ance of support with the distribution process. The close correlation was found between the utility of supported instruments and the analy-sis process. 2. The analysis of the fashion design activities (1) No significant differences were found in the design activities when the characteristics of companies were compared only. (2) According to the characteristics of fashion specialists the one with age experi-ence and high income showed rather good achievement but no significant differences were captured among sex department in charge title academic background education in abroad and field experience (3) The fashion information activities were strongly correlated with the design achieve-ment : The analysis process and the system-atic activity level had a great influence on the design activities. (4) In order to examine which cha-racteristics in (1-3) made it possible to pre-dct and discriminate the achievement in de-sign activities the Discriminant analysis was carried out. The results were as follows: the fashion information activities showed the highest discriminant rate. Next came the in-come level experience and age in that order Those four variables discrimated 37 from 50 who showed great achievement in design area (74%) and 51 from 83 in low achievement group (81%) Thus the total discriminant rate was 77.5%.

  • Product Life cycle Management (PLM) is an indispensable tool for manufactures to develop competitive products in an efficient way. This enlarges the number of participants for product development who should understand PLM for their supporting activities. However, burdens for developing example products, maintaining complex PLM systems and training prerequisite skills for engineering tools such as CAD systems prohibit an efficient introductory course to PLM. This paper proposes a comprehensive introductory course to PLM that bases on general product development process. In addition, it enables participants to build their example products with familiar Lego blocks and to construct 3D CAD assembly models by using predefined 3D elements. The PLM system for the course provides an intuitive and simple user environment for participants to specify their parts lists, associated 3D CAD models, and product structure of example products. Experiences on a class of the course show it is a valid and efficient education and training method for the PLM introduction.
