  • The disposal of stormwater is one of the major problems in urban water management. One method of reducing peak runoff rates and other detrimental impacts of stormwater is detention storage. Detention ponds as a water quality control alternatives have been investigated by a number of researchers. Recognizing multiple roles such as flood peak attenuation, pollution removal and aesthetic enhancement, the design and management of detentions ponds deserve more research. The purpose of this research is to establish design criteria wet detention ponds to improve water quality. Water quality in detention pond discharge might be improve with physical, chemical and biological alterations. Physical alteration was focused in this study. There are several methods for estimating the suspended solid control capability of wet detention ponds. Existing models of suspended solids removal are based on sedimentation and gravity settling theory. The pollutant trap efficiency of pond is a function of several interrelating factors. Detention time is the most important factor, because it determine gravity settling quantities of pollutants. Desirable modification of physical factors for improvement of water quality in wet detention ponds are volume ratio, area ratio, length to width ratio, depth, out let location, bottom soil type. In order to apply design procedure in actual site, Namak new town development area was selected.

  • The effect of water quality improvement of combined sewage by detention pond has been studied. It is convinced that the pollutant load and peak flow through the combined sewer by first rainfall and runoff can be decreased by detention pond sited at the outlet of small basin. Hydraulic modeling of detention panel was performed for two cases of sedimentation pond and gravel contact pond. It has been recognized that it is more efficient to reduce the pollutant of combined sewage when the combined sewage is released alter a fixed detention time in the detention pond than it is released continuously without detention time. The gravel contact detention pond shows higher pollutant removal rate than the sedimentation detention pond in all pollutants. When it comes to gravel contact detention pond, the gravel pond filled with crushed gravel has a higher pollutant removal rate than that filled with river gravel.

  • Objectives of this study were to investigate influencing factors of detention time, particle size distribution, and filter medium characteristics for waterworks sludge dewatering. The stepped pressure filtration was carried out with lab scale apparatus and the filter press pilot test for dewatering was conducted at the water treatment plant. Effects of filter medium and polymer dose were examined through observing water content and dewatering velocity and cyclic dewatering rate with filter press pilot test. Relationships among detention time, particle size distribution and filtration resistance were analyzed. Prolongation of sludge detention time was found to cause blinding phenomenon in cake and filter medium and to decrease dewatering process efficiency. The average specific resistance increased according to detention time. In pilot test of dewatering for thickened sludge with Nylon Multi-NY840D and Nylon Mono-100% filter media, dewatering velocities were 0.92 and $0.93kg\;DS/m^2{\cdot}hr$ according to 0.1% polymer dose of dried solids weight base. And cyclic dewatering rates were 2.45 and $2.50kg\;DS/m^2{\cdot}cycle$ cycle for the Nylon Multi-NY840D and Nylon Mono-100% media. Dewatering velocity of polymer dosed sludge was observed to be higher than that of non-polymer sludge.

  • This work is for examining a simplified equation based on the rational formula, which can easily decide storm-water detention volume in small urban catchments. The storm-water detention volume is determined by the inflow hydrograph flowing to detention basin and the outflow hydrograph discharged from the detention basin. The ratio of average outflow over the period of rainfall duration against allowable discharge was 0.5 in former simplified equation. But this research has found that the average outflow ratio depends on the storage methodology. In the case of the on-line storage method, the average outflow ratio is a function of the time of concentration of the catchments and rainfall duration, which ranged from 0.5~1.0. In the case of the off-line storage method, the average ratio is a function of peak discharge and allowable discharge except above time of concentration and rainfall duration, where its function value ranged from 1.0~2.0. When applying this equation to small catchment in Mokpo city, South Korea, we could easily calculate the relation curve between the storm-water detention volume and allowable discharge.

  • The dewaterability of a sludge can be characterized by two ways: the residual moisture content in the sludge cake after dewatering process, and the filtration of the sludge. Time to filter (TTF) represents filtration processes that are special cases of the flow through a solid matrix concept. TTF characterizes a resistance to filtration. The sludge resistance, in turn, can be subdivided into resistances associated with the solid phase and the liquid phase to evaluate the effect of each of the two phases on sludge dewaterability. In order to determine the dewatering characteristics of the water sludge samples, TTF and zeta potential were measured. For these studies cationic polymer was chosen for water sludge dewatering experiments. The zeta potential of thickener sludges neared from minus values to zero values till 4 days after sampling. The dewaterability of thickener sludges using cationic polymer was deteriorated according to the increase of detention time. As the detention time was increased from 4 to 10 days, the optimal dose of the polymer was increased from 4 to 8mg/L. Therefore, the optimal detention time plays an important part for the dewaterability of a sludge.

  • This study illustrates how to design and evaluate a non-point sources management detention pond using SWMM. In particular, special attention is given to the orifice design. In SWMM, orifice properties that need to be defined include its height above the bottom of the storage unit, its type, its geometry and its hydraulic properties. Among the various characteristics of orifice, the orifice hole size which is closely related to hydraulic retention time is focused in this study. Sensitivity analysis of orifice size in annual non-point sources reduction efficiency is carried out. In addition, a methodology which can be used to design a virtual junction in SWMM has been proposed to quantify water quality improvement triggered by the detention pond installation. As a result, it is recommended that a detention outlet should be designed to be about 2 to 3 days of hydraulic retention time.

  • Operation models for storm water pumps in detention pond were developed in order to reduce the damage by inundation in urbanized area. The return periods (10, 20, 30 years) of rainfall were selected to estimate inflow discharge to detention ponds. Inflow hydrographs of detention ponds were derived by using the SWMM, and Petri net diagrams were selected to analyze the pump actions. Safety and efficiency of pumps and detention ponds were estimated by penalty index. In order to verify the models, the models were applied to three selected detention ponds in Seoul area. In numerical experimental results, the developed model 3 is more effective in inland flooding prevention than the existing one, and may be used to design and evaluate detention ponds with real time data of rainfall.

  • This study analyzes inspection results of ships by Port State Control. Particularly, this research focuses on a detention trend of vessels that registered to Korean Register of Shipping. In order to conduct this research, we have searched 170 ships that got a detention with a Code-30 within recent 46 months period. The deficiencies of the detentions are inspected by ship types, ship years, flags, ports inspected, and criteria. Moreover, we categorized the deficiencies for the detentions into 17 types for internal and external inspections. As the results of the comparison study, bulk and general cargo carriers dominate the portion of detentions by almost 66 percent. Self-induced detention due to a lack of preparation by crews and company support are the main reasons of repeated detentions from the same type ships. Ships between six and ten years old show the lowest detention rate by 4 percent whereas ships less than five years old generate the highest detention rate by 22 percent. The main categories of the detentions from ships less than 5 years old are a lack of documentation and certification, and the clues support our opinion that owners and crews may neglect to prepare the inspections because their strong confidence for the ship condition due to young ship age. As a result of a great effort of Korean government and shipping companies to reduce a detention rate, the detention rate has been recently reduced to 0.3 percent. The results also require companies with the flag of convenience ships to spend more effort to reduce the detention rate, too. We expect that using social networking service by Korea Register will lower the detention rate by sharing relevant information real-time to ships and owners.

  • Urbanization results in increased runoff volume and peak flowrate and shortening in time of concentration, which may cause frequent flooding downstream. There are various types of flow retardation methods including detention ponds, retention ponds, and infiltration ponds. In general, hydrologic models to design the detention pond are classified into planning model and design model. This study is comparing and analyzing of planning model to design the detention pond in urban area. Detention ponds data of Disaster Impact Assessment Report on 22 sites were analyzed to investigate proper planning models in this study. From this research, following conclusions are derived, 1) In case of on-line detention pond, Lee model(1991) is the best planning model and similar to real storage volume. 2) In case of off-line detention pond, Abt and Grigg model is much more proper model compared to other models.

  • To solve the urban flood problems, it must get the enough channel conveyances and pumping capacities. It needs set up the detention system to control the flow over the channel capacity. Inspite of this detention system, the peak flow may increased by rainfall distribution and the delay of flow. This shows a design model of detention system which can consider the time problems from mutual connections of the detention storages and pumping flow using IDP(Incremental Dynamic Programming) method.
