  • It is generally known that radial vane blowers with vaneless diffuser may generate mostly only a rotating stall but backward curved vane blowers may do both an impeller and a diffuser rotating stalls. In this study, it was found from the numerical and experimental results that the diffuser rotating stall does not appear in a radial vane because of the suppression for the diffuser stall appearance by occurring of impeller rotating stall in a large flow rate coefficient. The diffuser rotating stalls occurring when the width of diffuser is broaden fur a backward curved vane blower are classified definitely by the diffuser flow rate coefficient defined by adopting the varying diffuser width.

  • This study describes effects of width contraction in vaneless diffuser on the performance of centrifugal compressors using commercial CFD code. Numerical analysis for three different diffusers such as Parallel, half contraction, and full contraction was performed. The results show that the performance of the centrifugal compressor is improved through the use of the diffusers with width parallel in high flow rate. The width contraction of diffusers is influenced static pressure rises. Comparison with the experimental data shows agreement.

  • The flow characteristics have been numerically investigated for various shapes of the diffuser/nozzles which are used for a valveless micro-pump. The important parameters considered in this study are the throat width ($15\~120\mu$m), the taper angle ($3.15\~25.2^{\circ}$), and the diffuser length ( $600\~4,800\mu$m), and the size of the middle chamber ($1\~16mm^2$). To find the optimal values for these parameters, steady state calculations have been performed assuming the constant pressure difference between the inlet and exit of the flow For the taper angle and the throat width, it is found that there exists an optimum at which the net flow rate is the greatest. The optimal taper angle is in the range of $10\~20^{\circ}$ for all the pressure differences; and the throat width indicates an optimal value near $75\mu$m for the case of 35 kPa pressure difference. The net flow rate is also influenced by the size of the middle chamber. With decreasing chamber size, the net flow rate is reduced because of the interference between two streams flowing into the middle chamber. The unsteady pulsating flow characteristics for a micro-pump with a given diffuser/nozzle shape have been also investigated to show the validity of the steady state parametric study.

  • The performance improvement of a small centrifugal compressor for waste water treatment has been conducted by the design change of vaneless diffuser and volute casing. Existing two compressors use a common impeller, but the width and length of the vaneless diffuser and the cross-sectional shape of the volute casing are different, respectively. Based on the experiment of the existing two compressors and their CFD results, the design of the vaneless diffuser and the volute casing has been changed. It was found that the strength of the interaction among the volute tongues, the vaneless diffusers and the impellers of two existing/one improved compressors, was affected by the cross-sectional area and inlet radial length of the volute casing including system losses' change. The efficiency of the impeller with one existing design was increased as the decrease of the width of the vaneless diffuser, but losses at the diffuser were accumulated. In conclusion, approximately 2.88%p efficiency increase at the design point of the new compressor with the improved design has been confirmed by CFD analysis results.

  • This paper presents flow regime maps of two-dimensional, planar diffusers with constant-area ducts at very low Reynolds numbers. They are obtained from numerical calculations using the commercial CFD program CFD-ACE+. The Reynolds numbers considered are 63, 105, and 210. For each Reynolds number, a wide range of geometric parameters of dimensionless diffuser length, which is a ratio of diffuser length to throat width, $1 and divergence half angle $1^{\circ}<\phi<50^{\circ}$ are selected to obtain steady-state solutions. These maps can be served as a guideline to designers for very low Reynolds number diffuser flows.

  • A portable infrared laser transmitter delivering a highly uniform detectable beam was demonstrated. It incorporates a flexible beam shaper, comprising a perforated diffuser sheet in conjunction with a pinhole. The beam shaper plays the prominent role of flexibly tailoring the incoming light via both scattering and diffraction, in order to equalize the effective beam width over a long distance. The intensity profile of a generated beam was practically observed, demonstrating that a substantially uniform beam of 70-cm width was achieved for a given threshold detection level, with an average deviation of 6% over a range of 600 m.

  • In this study, acoustic diffusers were designed as to the ISO method, which measured the random-incidence scattering coefficient of surfaces in a diffuse field. The diffusers which were made of GFRG (Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum), consisted of the cubes with different height and width. The height was from 50 to 250 mm and the maximum height was at the center of the diffusers to provide the early reflections. The surfaces were irregularly designed in order to add the lateral reflections. The scattering coefficient of the diffusers was measured in a 1;10 reverberation chamber, but the absorption coefficient was measured in a real scale reverberation chamber. The result of the scattering coefficient was compared to the hemisphere diffusers and the absorption coefficient was compared to ISO 354 data. To validate the measurement results, the scattering coefficient of the diffusers will be measured in a real scale reverberation chamber.

  • We have calculated differential reflection coefficient for isolated well structure of micro-scale, etched on dielectric surface. The differential reflection coefficient is computed using Green's second integral theorem. The purpose of our computation is to find a class of well profiles which give maximal diffusive scattering. To have such a maximal effect, we have concluded that the waist radius of Gaussian beam and its wavelength should be comparable to the well width and that well depth has to be larger than a wavelength. Exact calculation of differential reflection coefficients of dielectric surface with isolated structure on it may be used for the examination of dielectric surfaces and also in making simple but efficient diffuser.

  • The experimental study on the effect of axial clearance between the tip of impeller blades and stationary shroud has been performed. The investigated compressor, which is a part of a small auxiliary power unit engine, consists of a curved inlet, a centrifugal impeller, a channel diffuser and a plenum chamber. It was designed for a total pressure ratio of 4.3 and an efficiency of $77\%$ at design speed of 60,000 rpm. The experiments are carried out in an open-loop centrifugal compressor test rig driven by a turbine. For the four different clearance ratios Cr(clearance/impeller tip width) of 6.25, 10.93, 15.60 and 20.30 percent, the overall performance data are obtained at $97\%,\;90\%$ and $80\%$ of the design speed. The results show the overall pressure ratio decrease of $7.7\%$ and the efficiency loss of $8.7\%$ across the variation of clearance ratio near the design speed. It also indicates that the influence of tip clearance became weaker as the flow rate is reduced and the stable operating range is not significantly influenced by the change of clearance ratio.

  • This paper characterizes hi-directionally oscillating flow in planar microdiffusers in order to evaluate the frequency-dependent flow rectification performance of the microdiffusers. In the theoretical study, we analyze a hi-directionally oscillating flow in the planar microdiffuser. In the experimental study, we fabricate two different microdiffuser prototypes, having different neck widths of 100 ㎛ (D100) and 300 ㎛(D300), respectively. The experimental net flow rates are measured as 116.6 $\mu$ι/min. and 344.4 $\mu$ι/min. for D100 and D300, respectively. The experimental flow rate of D300 decreases at the oscillating flow frequencies higher than 90Hz, at which the net boundary layer thickness is reduced to the microdiffuser neck width. It is experimentally verified that the flow rectification performance and the net flow rate of the microdiffusers tend to decrease when the boundary layer thickness is smaller than the diffuser neck width.
