  • This paper compared and investigated the choice of optimal algorithm affects on the directivity synthesis of linear array in the satisfaction to the design specification of the desired directivity, convergence characteristic, and adaptability. Optimal algorithms use a quasi-Newton method(DFP and BFGS method) for realizing the desired directivity, used a quasi-ideal beam, steering beam, and a multi-beam, chosen as desired directivity. In the numerical result, this paper verified the effectiveness of the quasi-Newton method to the directivity synthesis, and offered a solving approach of occurred problems in the numerical simulation process.

  • Optimum directivity synthesis of ultrasonic transducers in linear array is considered. To realize the desired directivity, a robust and efficient method is proposed which is the direct inversion combined with the iterative DFP (Davidon-Fletcher-Powell) method. A quasi-ideal beam with the beam width and the steering beam angle specified are chosen for the numerical demonstrations. The demonstration is then extended to the case of multi-beams. The proposed combination method shows quick convergence over the single LMS or DFP method at the expense of the system matrix inversion.

  • A numerical simulation is carried out on the directivity synthesis of ultrasonic transducers by point source array. Gauss elimination method is practiced by means of a directive method to realize the desired directivity. Desired directivity is chosen to be that of a directivity of line source, a beam width and a direction arbitrary specified. On the numerical result, Gauss elimination method is showed high speed ca- lculative simulation and stability of system more than iterative method(LMS, DFP). Numerical simulations are carried out by PC(CPU:80486 DX2, RAM 16Mbyte).

  • In this paper, we proposed an algorithm that used a direct method to set an initial value of Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno(BFGS) method and, accordingly, conducted an experiment in optimal directivity synthesis of adaptive ultrasonic transducer by point source array. To certify the efficiency of this method, quasi-ideal beam with arbitrary beam width, rotating beam, and multi beam, all with the limited side lobe level -30dB, were chosen to check the problem of directivity synthesis that was formed by point source array in the second dimensional sound field. The numerical calculation results showed that the proposed method performed the directivity synthesis faster than the BFGS method did. In addition, the proposed method showed a good error correction for directivity synthesis, and did not demand the choice of initial value. Finally, it is also shown that the proposed method can be used for the adaptive control that was not possible with the direct method alone.

  • This paper carried out numerical calculation about the directivity synthesis problem in two dimension of adaptive ultrasonic transducers. Adaptive system for directivity synthesis is constructed by multi-electrode array on the surface of only one piezoelectric ceramic plate combined with optimal algorithm. In order to realize the desired directivity that is established arbitrarily, the optimal vibrational displacement is calculated by optimal algorithm (DFP method). Secondly, the optimal voltage of electrodes which is correspond to the calculated vibrational displacement is calculated used by finite element method and DFP method. And, the vibration analysis in two dimension of piezoelectric transducer carried out by means of finite element method.

Directive method with combined LMS(Least-Mean-Square) method is practiced by means of a iterative method to realize the desired directivity. The directiviey of quasi-ideal beam with a beam width and a directive arbitrary specified was chosen. On the numerical resut, Proposed algorithm shows higher speed of clculating simulation than that of LMS method, and make adaptive control, which enables the desired directivity. • Various methods have been so far proposed to find out the directions and spectra of sound waves from the sources for provisions of noise controls. The conventional methods are generally classified into three systems such as, single microphone system, moving microphone system and multi-microphone system, which composes a resultant super directivity by giving a appropriate delay and a weighting coefficient in the output of each microphone. In case of using a single microphone there is a difficulty in providing it with desirable super directivity in the low frequency range, while in case of using multi-microphone system there has been a disadvantage that the measurement of directivity could not separately be done with the spectrum analysing. And in case of the use of a moving microphone system it needs a condition that the sound source to be detected should be stationary state and in rest. However here we introduce a method that the spectral analysing and the directivity of synthesis can be separately carried out by using a linear array of many microphones, in which each output of the microphone is multiplied by appropriate weighting coefficient and all of those products are summed after passing through adequate filters. The resultant signal is then sampled with an adequate sampling frequency and taken average for processing.

  • Sub-arrays of arbitrary conformal array have different geometric shape through steering direction, thus the beam patterns of sub-arrays are always non-uniform. In this paper, we apply the beam pattern synthesis method using convex optimization into the conformal array, and shows the improvement of uniformity of beam performance. The simulation is performed with the conformal array of cut-sphere shape. As a result, the standard deviation of 3 dB beamwidth in elevation is greatly reduced but the directivity index is also reduced. To alleviate this trade-off, we propose a convex optimization using a shading function.

  • The objective of this study is to optimize the shape of doubly curved surface where a conformal array is equipped. That surface is modeled with a double-ellipsoid solid controlled by four parameters. By analyzing the performance of the conformal array beams with the beam pattern synthesis, two design parameters are determined. Then, we define the weighted object function which is formulated as the sum of sharp indexes for directivity index, the elevation resolution, and the bearing resolution. The direct calculation on all grids is used to evaluate the weighted object function and seek the optimal value of two design parameters when the weightings are given. In the simulation, four kinds of weighting cases are respectively applied to evaluate the weighted object function. The optimal shapes of double-ellipsoid solid are shown in each case. Especially, when the uniform weightings are used, the double-ellipsoid solid with more smooth surface is obtained.

  • In this paper, we carried out the numerical examination of the initial value setting-up method to extend the range of optimal step parameter in a adaptive system which is controlled by LMS algorithm. For initial value setting-up methods, the general method which select the initial value randomly and the other method which applies the approximate value obtained from the direct method to initial value, were used. And then, we compared to the ranges of step parameter setting, the convergence speeds of mean-square-error, and the stabilities during the convergence process when the initial values were applied to the optimal directivity synthesis problem. According to the numerical simulation results, the initial value setting-up method by means of the direct method provides wider range for the step parameter, more efficient capability for convergence and stability, and more error correction ability than the general method.
