The joining of Ti and SUS304 dissimilar metals is one of the effective measures to save rare metal. But Ti and SUS304 have differences in materials properties, and Ti and Fe intermetallic compounds such as TiFe and $TiFe_2$ are easily formed in weld fusion zone between Ti and SUS304. Nevertheless, in this study, full penetration lap dissimilar welding of Ti and SUS304 using single-mode fiber laser with ultra-high welding speed was tried, and it was found out that ultra-high welding speed could control the generation of intermetallic compound. To recognize the formation of intermetallic phase in the weld fusion zone and the compound zone of interface weld area were observed and analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). And it was confirmed that the ultra-high welding speed could reduce amount of intermetallic compounds, but the intermetallic compounds were existed in the weld fusion zone under the all conditions.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of ultrasonic nano crystal surface modification (UNSM) on residual stress mitigation after Weld Inlay repair for butt dissimilar metal weld with Alloy 82/182 in reactor vessel In/Outlet nozzle. As-welded and Weld Inlay specimens were made in accordance with design standard of ASME Code Case N-766, and two planes of their weld specimens were peened by the optimum UNSM process condition. Peening characteristics for weld specimens after UNSM treatment were evaluated by surface roughness and Vickers hardness test. And, residual stress for weld specimens developed from before and after UNSM treatment was measured and evaluated by instrumented indentation technique. Consequently, it was revealed that the mitigation of residual stress in weld metal after Weld Inlay repair of reactor vessel In/Outlet nozzle could be possible through UNSM treatment.

In early constructed nuclear power plants, Ni-based Alloys 82/182 had been widely used for dissimilar metal welds (DMW) as a weld filler metal. However, Alloys 82/182 have been proven to be susceptible to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) in the nuclear primary water environment. The formation of crack due to PWSCC is also influenced by weld residual stresses. Thus, the accurate estimation of weld residual stresses of DMW is crucial to investigate the possibility of PWSCC and instability behaviors of crack due to PWSCC. In this context, the present paper investigates weld residual stresses of nuclear reactor piping nozzles based on 2-D axi-symmetric finite element analyses based on layer-based approach using maximum molten bead temperature. In particular, the effect of analysis parameters, i.e., a thickness of weld layer, an initial molten bead temperature, convection heat transfer coefficient, and geometric constraints on predicted weld residual stresses was investigated.
In this study, dissimilar friction welding were produced using 15mm diameter solid bar in chrome molybedenum steel(SCM440) to carbon steel(S45C) to investigate their mechanical properties and the relationship between the weld parameters and the nondestructive coefficients, such as AE counts and ultrasonic attenuation coefficient. The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond of area and heat affected zone. The specimens were tested as-welded and post weld heat treated(PWHT). The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased up to 100% of the S45C base metal under the condition of all heating time. The ductility of PWHT specimens is higher than as-welded.

This paper is concerned with numerical analyses of residual stresses in welds and material's susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) for the primary piping system in nuclear power plants: Both the dissimilar metal weld (DMW) for stainless steel to low alloy steel joints and the similar metal weld (SMW) for forged stainless steel to cast stainless steel joints are considered. Thermal elasto-plastic analyses using the finite element method (FEM) are performed to predict residual stresses generated in fabrication welding and its related processes for both the DMW and SMW, including effects of quenching for cast stainless steel piping, machining of the DMW root, and grinding of the SMW root. As a result, the effect of quenching should be included in the evaluation of residual stresses in the SMW for the cast stainless steel piping. It is deemed that residual stresses in both the DMW and SMW would not affect the SCC susceptibility of the welds providing that the welding processes are completed without any weld repair on the inside wall of the joint. However, the grinding process if performed on the safe-end to piping weld, would produce a high level of residual stresses in the inner surface region and thus a stress improvement process (e.g. buffing) should be considered to reduce susceptibilities to SCC.
Dissimilar friction welds were produced using 15-mm diameter solid bars of chrome molybdenum steel (KS SCM440) and carbon steel (KS SM20C) to investigate their mechanical properties. The main friction welding parameters were selected to ensure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond area and HAZ, and macro-structure investigations. The specimens were tested as-welded and post-weld heat treated (PWHT). The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased to 100% of the SM20C base metal under the condition of a heating time of more than four seconds. Optimal welding conditions were n = 2,000 (rpm), HP = 60 (MPa), UP = 100 (MPa), HT = 5 (s),and UT = 5 (s), when the total upset length was 7.8 (mm). The hardness distribution peak of the friction welded joints could be eliminated using PWHT. The two different kinds of materials were strongly mixed to show a well-combined structure of macro-particles, with no molten material, particle growth, or defects.

Dissimilar friction welding were produced using 10mm and 11mm diameter solid bar in Inconel ally(IN X-750) to Stainless steel(STS316L) to investigate their mechanical properties. The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Virkers hardness surveys of the bond of area and HAZ and macro-structure investigations. The specimens were tested as welded, not heat-treated. The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased up to $95\%$ of the STS316L base metal under the condition of all heating time. Optimal welding conditions were n=2,000(rpm), $P_1=220(MPa),\;P_2=260(MPa),\;t_1=4(s),\;t_2=4(s)$ when the total upset length is 7(mm).

Dissimilar metal welds in nuclear power plant are known as very susceptible to PWSCC flaws, and periodically inspected by the qualified inspector and qualified procedure during in-service inspection period. According to field survey data, the majority of their DMWs are located on tapered nozzle or adjacent to a tapered component. These types of configurations restrict examination access and also limit examination volume coverage. Additionally, circumferential scan for axially oriented flaw is very difficult to detect located on tapered surface because the transducer can't receive flaw response from reflector for miss-orientation. To overcome this miss-orientation, it is necessary adapt skewed ultrasonic transducer accomodate tapered surface. The skewed refracted longitudinal ultrasonic transducer designed by modeling and manufactured from the modelling result for axial flaw detection. Experimental results showed that the skewed refracted longitudinal ultrasonic transducer get higher flaw response than non-skewed refracted longitudinal ultrasonic transducer.

To evaluate the applicability of dissimilar joining between Mg and Al alloys in automobile manufacturing process, solid state joining processes such as magnetic pulse welding(MPW), friction stir welding(FSW) and friction spot joining(FSJ) were attempted successfully. MPW process has been concentrated mainly on round section tube to tube and tube to bar welds. AZ31 Mg alloy has been successfully welded to pure Al A1070 as well as to Al alloy A3003. While, for friction stir welding of dissimilar sheet joints, AZ31B/A6061 with the thickness of 2mm were used and a square butt joint with a good quality was obtained at the conditions of 0.8mm/sec of travel speed and tool rotation speed of 850rpm. The maximum tensile strength of 179 MPa, which was about 80 % of the Mg base metal tensile strength, has been obtained. Finally, friction spot joining was attempted to make a dissimilar lap joint between AZ31(0.8mm) and A6061(1mm), while the joint exhibited the same level of tensile shear strength as that of similar Mg joint.
The scope of this investigation is to evaluate the effect of joining parameters on the microstructural features and mechanical properties of dissimilar aluminum alloys, 1mm-thickness fixing AA6K31 at the top position and fixing AA5J32 at the bottom position. The friction stir lap welds were studied under various welding conditions, rotation speed of 1000, 1250, 1500rpm and welding speed of 100, 300, 500, 700mm/min, respectively. Mechanical test has been investigated in terms of tensile shear test and hardness test. The results showed that three type nugget shapes such as onion ring, zigzag type, hooking with the void, have been observed with revolutionary pitch. All welding conditions fractured at the HAZ of top plate, A6K31 and also the strength compare with base metal of lap joints were low efficiency, 52~63%. The thickness of fractured position was decreased with the lower heat input conditions. The relationships were excellent due to linear between the effective thickness of fractured position and peak load. The fractured position was the interface between joint area and not joint area. Also the strength efficiency compared with base metal was lower than decreasing rate of thickness because the hardness was decreased at fractured position due to softened material.
