A study on the ultrasonic weldability of the dissimilar plastics (이종 플래스틱의 초음파 용접성에 대한 연구)

  • Welding of dissimilar materials is an area of growing importance in the automotive, aerospace, electronics medical and other domestic appliance industries. This study investigated the ultrasonic welding of dissimilar polymers. Two amorphous and two semicrystalline polymers were used, utilizing all possible welding combinations. For each combination of dissimilar materials, the weldabilitys of the joint was evaluated as a function of weld time, amplitude of vibration and pressure. The joint was also examined microscopically to analyze the melting and flow of the materials. It was generally around found that welding of amorphus polymers resulted in very poor joints. Welding of the amorphous polymers together and welding of the semicrystalline polymers together produced good joints.

  • The use of light-weight Al alloys in the automotive industry is increasing to meet requirements for fuel efficiency and emission reduction. Joining Al alloy to the conventional steel sheet is also very important issue with the increased use of Al alloy, and several joining processes have been introduced to enhance joining strength between dissimilar metals. This paper deals with a galvanic corrosion in the dissimilar metal joining. Salt spray tests up to 2000 hours were conducted on a self-piercing rivet, spot welded, adhesive bonded and weld-bonded joints, and cross-sections and tensile shear strength according the salt spray duration were analyzed at every 500-hour. Self-piercing rivet joint had relative low initial strength but the joint strength did not change regardless of the salt spray duration. The strength of other joints (spot welded, adhesive bonded and weld-bonded joints) decreased with the increase of salt spray duration and the corrosion behaviour of each joint was discussed.

A Study on Weldability and Prediction of Nugget Shape in Dissimilar Metal Arc Spot Weld (이종 금속의 아크 스폿 용접성 및 접합부 형상 예측에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the lap welding between austenitic stainless steel and carbon steel was carried out using arc spot welding process and weldability of welded specimens was estimated. From the tensile-shear strength test, micro Vickers harness test, and microstructure observation, specimen of $psi6.5mm$(hole of upper plate) showed the best results in terms of tensile-shear strength and nugget shape. And there was an unmix zone in fusion boundary between the carbon steel base metal and bulk weld metal. This zone had very width with the hard microstructure. The shape of weld nugget in arc spot welding of dissimilar metal melds was predicted by searching thermal history of a weld joint through a three-dimensional finite element model. From the numerical analysis, predicted the shape of weld nugget showed good agreement with the experiment.

  • The purpose of this work is to find an appropriate welding approach for rotor assembly of a marine turbocharger. The friction welding and laser welding of dissimilar materials, IN713LC and SCM440 were investigated. The quality of the welded joints obtained from two welding processes was evaluated by microstructure observation, micro-hardness and tensile tests. The friction welded joint indicated a good bonding structure in the weld interface. On the other hand, the laser welded joint showed the weld defects and non-welded area in the weld interface.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of mechanical properties within the heat affected zones(HAZs) of dissimilar metal weld joint between SA508 Gr.1a and F3l6 stainless steel(SS) with Alloy 82/182 filler metal. Tensile tests were performed using small-size specimens taken from the heat affected regions close to both fusion lines of weld, and the micro-structures were examined using optical microscope(OM) and transmission microscope(TEM). The results showed that significant gradients of the yield stress(YS), ultimate tensile stress(UTS), and elongations were observed within the HAZ of SA508 Gr.1a. This was attributed to the different microstructures within the HAZ developed during the welding process. In the HAZ of F316 SS, however, the welding effect dominated the YS and elongation rather than UTS. TEM micrographs demonstrated these characteristics of the HAZ of F316 SS was associated with a dislocation-induced strain hardening.

  • To develop and understand dissimilar metals joining of Stainless steel and Copper, ultra-high speed laser lap welding was studied using single mode fiber laser in this study. SUS304 and Cu have large differences in materials properties, and Cu and Fe have no intermetallic compounds by typical binary phase of Cu and Fe system. In this study, ultra-high speed lap welds of SUS304 and Cu dissimilar metals using single-mode fiber laser was generated, and weldability of the weld fusion zone was evaluated using a tensile shear test. To understand the phenomenon of tensile shear load, weld fusion zone of interface weld area and fracture parts after tensile shear test were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis system. And it was confirmed that Cu was easily melting and penetrating in the grain boundaries of SUS304 because of low melting temperature. And high thermal conductivity of copper occurred dissipate heat energy rapidly. These properties cause the solidification cracking in weld zone.

  • The spot weldability of dissimilar metal joints between austenitic stainless steels (STS316)/IF steels and ferritic stainless steels (STS430)/IF steels was investigated. This study was aimed to determine the spot welding parameters for a dissimilar metal joint and to evaluate the dissimilar metal joint's weldability, including its welding nugget shape, tensile-shear strength, hardness, and microstructure. The comparison of these results was described in terms of fracture behavior. Compared with the weld lobe of similar metal joints, dissimilar metal joints (STS430/IF) had reduced weld current range. However, the weld lobe of STS316/IF steel joint showed increased weld current range. This is because the dilution of chemical composition in the molten weld pool suppressed the heat input being caused by Joule heat with current flow through the samples. The microstructure of the fusion zone was fully martensite and mixture of ferrite and martensite for austenitic stainless steel/IF steel and ferritic stainless steel/IF steel combination, respectively. The experimental results showed that the shape of nugget was asymmetric, in which the fusion zone of the austenitic and ferritic stainless steel sheet was larger due to the higher bulk-resistance. The predicted microstructure by using the Schaeffler diagram was well matched with experimental results. After peel test, the fracture was initiated from heat affected zone of ferritic stainless steel sheet side, however the final fracture was propagated into the IF steel sheet side due to its lower strength.

  • 최근 자동차 산업은 고효율 및 친환경이라는 전세계적인 이슈에 따라 고연비의 자동차 개발에 총력을 다하고 있다. 그러므로 다양한 고강도 강 및 경량 금속이 자동차의 차체에 적용되고 있다. 특히 철강재료에 있어서 기존의 저 탄소강에서 다양한 기능을 갖은 고강도 강으로 그 종류가 다양화되고 있으며 이에 따라 저항 점용접을 이용한 차체의 접합은 점점 이종의 강판을 접합하는 비율이 점차로 늘어나고 있다. 이와 같이 강판의 종류가 다양해짐에 따라 수많은 이종 강판에 대한 조합이 생기고 있으며, 이를 모두 실험을 통해 최적 용접조건을 찾기에는 많은 시간과 노력이 투자되어야 된다. 그러나 시뮬레이션 기법으로 이종 접합의 초기 용접조건에 대한 정보를 얻는다면, 최소의 실험을 통해 좀 더 손쉽게 최적의 용접조건을 도출할 수 있다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 실제 자동차에 많이 쓰이는 강판인 EDDQ급 도금강판 0.7t와 440R 급 1.2t 및 DP 590 1.0t의 3종류의 이종 강판에 대한 점 용접특성을 저항 점용접 전문 소프트웨어인 SORPAS를 이용하여 시뮬레이션하고 분석하였다. 시뮬레이션은 겹치기 순서에 따라 용접 전류, 가압력, 용접 시간을 변수로 하여 각각의 겹침 순서에 대한 2개의 용접 점에 대한 너겟의 크기를 분석하였으며 로브 곡선을 얻을 수 있었다. 이를 통해 3겹의 겹치기 순서에 따른 용접 특성을 비교할 수 있었으며, 이것을 실제 생산라인의 자동차 차체의 조립 순서 결정에 있어서 응용함으로써 용접 특성을 고려한 차체 조립에 적용이 가능할 것으로 사료된다.

  • The weld zone of dissimilar formed Al alloy exhibited the complex structure of the two materials and mainly composed of the retreating side material. The mechanical properties were also depended on the dominant microstructure of the weld zone with welding conditions. The different mechanical properties of weld zone with welding conditions were related to the behavior of the precipitates of wrought Al alloy and Si particles of cast Al alloy. The higher mechanical properties of weld were acquired when relatively harder material, wrought Al alloy, was fixed at the retreating side.
