  • Flow patterns of fluid flow in dividing trbe were visualized, and the energy losses due to dividing were measured in laminar dividing flow of the viscoelastic fluid and its solution in tube junctions with dividing angles of $90^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $65^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$. Two separation zones were observed. swelling of the streamline to the main tube or to lateral tube was observed. The sizes of the separation zones depend on the Reynolds number, the dividing angle and the dividing flow rate. The energy loss coefficients decrease with increasing Reynolds number, but their decreasing rate decreases with increasing Reynolds number as the sizes of the separation zone increase. The effect of dividing angle on the energy loss coefficients and separation is greater for main tube than for the lateral tube.

  • The characteristics of flow in dividing regions are precise, therefore their classification is very important not only in industry but also in hydrodynamics. By now, many studies of flow in dividing regions have been peformed, but flow characteristics that use visualization In dividing regions have not been studied. The present study of the PIV and the CFD exhibit average velocity distributions, kinetic energy distributions and total pressure distributions etc of the total flow field due to the development of the accurate visualization optical laser and of optical equipment. Also, PIV is accurate with the flows characteristics of the dividing region as continuous analysis is done using input equipment. The study analyzes velocity vector field, turbulence kinetic energy, turbulence viscosity of dividing regions with flow for visualization of the PIV and the CFD measurement in a dividing rectangular ducts.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of the dividing flow in the laminar flow region. Using glycerine water solution(wt43%) for Newtonian fluid and the polymer of viscoelastic fluid(500wppm) for non-Newtonian fluid, this research investigates the flow state of the dividing tube in steady laminar flow region of the two dimensional dividing tube by measuring the effect of Reynolds number, dividing angle, and the flow rate ratio on the loss coefficient. In T- and Y-type tubes, the loss coefficients of the Newtonian fluid decreases in constant rate when the Reynolds number is below 100. The effect of the flow rate ratio on the loss coefficients is negligible. But when the Reynolds number is over 100, the loss coefficient with various flow rate ratios approach an asymptotic value. The loss coefficient of the non-Newtonian fluid for different the Reynolds number shows the similar tendency of the Newtonian fluid. And when the Reynolds number is over 300, the loss coefficient is approximately 1.03 regardless of flow rate ratio or the dividing angle. The aspect ratio does hardly influence the reattachment length and the loss coefficient of both Newtonian and non Newtonian fluid. The loss coefficient decreases as the Reynolds number increases. The loss coefficient of Newtonian fluid is larger than that of non-Newtonian fluid.

  • This paper addresses the optimal design of dividing wall distillation column which is rapidly applied in a variety of chemical processes over recent several years because of its high energy saving efficiency. A general dividing wall column model which can cope with the heat transfer through the dividing wall is developed using rigorous computer simulation. Based on the simulation model, the effects of the internal recycle flow distribution around the dividing wall and the heat transfer across the dividing wall on overall system performance are investigated. An improved method is suggested to utilize the heat transfer through the wall to optimal column design. The suggested method is compared with the existing method via. simulation study and shows more improved energy saving result. Several control strategies for the divided wall column are tested and the optimal control strategy is propose

  • In this paper an experimental study was investigated for two-phase flow distribution in compact heat exchanger header. A test section was consisted of the horizontal bottom dividing header($\phi$: 5 mm, L: 80 mm) and 10 upward circular mini channels ($\phi$: 1.5 mm, L: 850 mm) using an acrylic tube. Three different types of tube intrusion depth were tested for the mass flux and inlet mass quality ranges of 50 - 200 kg/$m^2$s and 0.1 - 0.3, respectively. Air and water were used as the test fluids. The distribution of vapor and liquid is obtained by measurement of the total mass flow rate and the calculation of the quality. Two-phase flow pattern was observed, and pressure drop of each channel was measured. By adjusting the intrusion depth of each channel an uniform liquid flow distribution through the each channel was able to solve the mal-distribution problem.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the dividing two-phase flow in a horizontal micro T-junction with the same rectangular cross section, $800\;{\mu}m{\times}800\;{\mu}m$, experimentally. Air and water were used as the test fluids. The superficial velocity ranges of air and water were 15~20 m/s and 0.11~0.2 m/s, respectively. Dividing flow characteristics at the micro T-junction are different from those at the larger T-junctions (5~10 mm in hydraulic diameter). Compared with the results of previous works related with the T-junction with mini cross sections (about 5 mm), for lower range of gas separation, the fraction of the liquid separated through the branch decreases for the fixed fraction of the gas separation. But for higher range of gas separation, higher liquid separation could be found.

  • The dividing flow in an open channel has a number of distinctive characteristics. One of these is that the separation zone interacts with a secondary motion along the inner wall of a branch channel, generating sediment accumulation. To investigate this phenomenon, a two-dimensional numerical model based on the shallow-water equations, RMA2, which calculates water surface elevations and horizontal-velocity components, was used to analyze the dividing flow. The obtained numerical results fully coincide with the laboratory measurements reported by Hsu et al.(2002). For the analysis of the numerical results, a separation zone-discharge rate relationship was proposed. To reduce the size of a separation zone, the topographies of diagonal and curved edges were proposed, smoothly connecting the upstream corner to branch channel.

  • The flow characteristics in a bifurcated duct are investigated experimentally. Physical properties such as mean velocity vectors, mean vorticity, and total pressure distributions are obtained for three different Reynolds numbers (578, 620, 688) using PIV measurements and CFD analysis. Also, two different dividing ducts ($90^{\circ},\;60^{\circ}$) were selected for study. The results of this study would be useful to the engineers designing flow systems for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and waste-water purification plants.
