Effects of Environmental Factors on the Adaptation to University Dormitory Life - The Case of Seoul National University Dormitories - (단지형 대학 기숙사의 거주환경요소가 기숙사생활 적응에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 - 서울대학교 관악학생생활관을 대상으로 -)

  • Dormitories of Korean university are planned to pursue qualitative growth after a period of quantitative growth in the 1970s. However, since the 1990s, the physical plan for qualitative growth has not changed significantly and the effects of these changes on dormitory residents has not been verified. The purpose of this study is to identify the environmental factors influencing dormitory life adaptation and to provide a basis for qualitative growth of university dormitories to help dormitory residents adapt to the environment. The research was conducted in three stages. First, the elements of the residential environment of the dormitory complex, which is an independent variable, were derived. The dormitory life adaptation scale was developed to measure the dependent variable. Secondly, a questionnaire survey was conducted to obtain the environmental factors of current dormitory and previous residence and three elements of dormitory life adaptation; 'acceptance of change', 'familiarity', and 'anxiety'. Third, statistical analysis was conducted to determine whether each factor influenced dormitory life adaptation.

  • The Korean government has recently implemented the public policy, so-called the Dormitory-based Public High-School Operation. The policy aims at providing the community-based high-quality education for the high-school students in the regional areas including agricultural, sea-side, and mountainous territories. Since the schools will be open for 24 hours a day during a whole year, they need to develop educational programs after regular school hours and violence prevention systems to maintain stable surroundings for study. In doing so, it is required for the schools to set up a systematic dormitory operation & administration program reflecting the demands of the dormitory users. Most of the schools, however, have not experienced operating a dormitory, thereby do not have any clues to successfully build the dormitory system. The main objective of this research is not only to provide the information on the demands of the dormitory users and their concerns with the demands but also to suggest guidelines to better build the system through conducting questionnaire survey to the students in a currently operated dormitory-based high-school.

  • The dormitory, a common facility for college students, is being deployed and used in terms of both efficient use of space for students and comfortable living. Among them, I was in charge of the rest of the students in the dormitory and investigated and analyzed the dormitory bed which occupied the largest portion of the indoor space. The purpose of this study is to investigate the present condition of bed arrangement and the use condition of the university dormitory in Seoul, and finally to design the bed design which is practical and maximize storage for the students in the dormitory space that accommodates a large number of people, Respectively.

  • In general, the function of university dormitory includes residental, educational and many other functions for students who need quite environment and energetic living life. This functions influence the residental satisfaction of university dormitory. So this study attempts to evaluate many functions of the D-university dormitory according to the residents (students) needs and satisfaction. In the present work, SPSS window version 12.0 programs Anova (duncan, scheff, T-test. etc.) was used for analysis of statistical data which obtained from survey. The field surveys carried out for a total samples of 159 residents such as male (86), female (73), in the D-university dormitory. The result appears that the most dissatisfied factor of resident was the space and facilities of wash room. and students demand that various room and program in the dormitory except main space (unit room).

A Study of the Health Problem Complaints of University Women Students (일부 여자 대학생들의 건강문제 호소에 관한 조사연구)

  • This study was carried out during the month of September 1976 to analyse and compare the health complaints of two groups of the university women, those who lived at home and those who lived in the university dormitory. The purpose of the study was to provide basic data required by the university health program for planning related to the health need of women students. The study sample consisted of 434 students living in the dormitory and 381 students living at home enrolled for the fall semester 1976 in a womens university in Seoul. The instrument used for the collection of data was an abridged version of a modified Cornell Medical Index. The questionarre included 35 items related to physical health complaint and 22 items related to mental health complaints. The data was treated by a computer (SPSS) using one way analysis, the Fishers' ratio and Chi-Square test at the 5% level were used for the test for statistical significance. The interpretation of this study is limited due to the sample which was restricted to one university and not randomly selected. To guide the direction of the study, it was hypothesized that the rate of expressed health problems of students living in the dormitory would be Venter than that of students living at home. The hypothesis was tested and rejected. The following is a summary of the findings; 1. Total health (physical and mental) complaints a. There was no statistically significant difference between the home and dormitory groups with regard to total health complaints expressed. b. The rate of total complaints expressed by the home group significantly higher than dormitory group only among third year students. c. There was no statistically significant between the home and dormitory groups in their satisfaction with their economic situation. d. The home group showed a significantly higher rate of complaints related to the Nervous System compared to that of the dormitory group. 2. Physical health complaints a. Students living at home showed a significantly higher rate of physical complaints than the dormitory group. b. When the year variable was controlled, the third year was the only group which showed a different rate between home and dormitory groups; the home group presented a higher rate. c. Since the year variable seemed to affect the physical complaints those data were further analysed to see whether the specific system areas were operating as variables in each year. The results were as follow: Among the home group, First year students showed a higher rate in Family History of Disease, while the third year students more Nervous System and Cardiovascular System complaints. Among the dormitory group, only fourth year students showed a higher rate in the Skeletal-Muscular System. This was the only area the dormitory group though only for the fourth year students supported the hypothesis. d. When the economic satisfaction variable was controlled, the satisfied group was the only group which showed a different rate between home and dormitory groups; the home group presented higher rate. e. Since the economic satisfaction variable seemed to affect the physical complaints those data were further analyzed to see whether the specific system areas were operating as variables in each economic satisfaction level, but there was no statistically significant difference between home and dormitory groups. 3. Mental health complaints a. There was no significantly difference between home and dormitory groups with regard to mental health complaints expressed. b. When the year variable was controlled the third year group was the only group which showed a different rate between home and dormitory groups; the home group presented a higher rate. c. Since the year variable seemed to affect the mental complaints, those data were further analyzed to see whether the specific system areas were operatings variables in each economic satisfaction level. The result were as follows: Among the home group, the third year students showed higher rates in Inadequacy and Anxiety. d. When the economic satisfaction variable was controlled, the very satisfied group was the only group which showed a different rate between home and dormitory groups: the home group presented a higher rate. Since the economic satisfaction variable seemed to affect the mental complaints, those data were further analysed to see whether the specific system areas were operating as variables in each economic satisfaction level, but there was no statistical significant difference between the home and dormitory groups. Although the social environment of dormitory life differs from family life, there was no difference in the rate of total health problem complaints between the home and dormitory groups but the home group showed a higher rate of physical health complaints than the dormitory group. Possible positive factors influencing dormitory life and negative factors influencing family life affecting health complaints must be explored in order to relate to the health needs of the university health program. This study could not define the causes for the fewer physical complaints of dormitory students living at home. Further study of such causal factors recommended in order to provide the data needed to contribute to a more effective health program.

Need of Dormitory Environment Improvement and School-life Stress in the Special-purpose high school according to Residential Satisfaction in Dormitory and Housing (기숙사와 자가의 주거환경 만족도에 따른 특목고의 기숙사 환경개선 요구도 및 학교생활 스트레스)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence the need for improvements to dormitory environments and to study the stress from school-life according to residential satisfaction in dormitories and housing. For the purpose of this study, a survey was conducted including a questionnaire consisting of a residential satisfaction scale, a need of dormitory environment improvement scale, and a school-life stress scale. The subjects were 453 special purpose students in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do who all live in a dormitory. Factor analysis, Cronbach' $\alpha$ and MANOVA were employed for data analysis, and Scheffe test was used for post-hoc analysis. First, the lower group the satisfaction of a physical residential environment in a dormitory, the more likely it is that the dormitory environment need improvement. The result of this study suggests that dormitory students are much more sensitive to conditions relating to physical residential satisfaction than to sociopsychological residential satisfaction. Also, the residents believe that change to these physical residential conditions facilitate an improvement to sociopsychological residential satisfaction. Moreover, when the satisfaction of a physical residential environment is lower group, more perceptive stress occurs from academic, health and personal factors while a lower satisfaction for the sociopsychological residential environment results in a more perceptive stress from the environment. The result of this study suggests that dormitory conditions indicate the necessity of improving the environment to adapt well to school-life, thus reducing stress. Also when simply providing a supplementary physical residential environment the sociopsychological residential environment should be considered, as this can cause conflicts between roommates. Second, the lower group the satisfaction for a physical residential environment in housing, the more likely it is that the dormitory environment need improvement. The result of this study suggests that for environments of inadequate housing there is a strong urge towards needing more independence and a better living environment. Third, when group feel there is a more substantial difference in the physical residential environment between dormitories and housing, it is more likely it is that the dormitory environment need to be improved. Also, when they feel there is more substantial difference in the sociopsychological residential environment between dormitories and housing, a more perceptive stress is detected from the environment. The result of this study suggests that dormitory students want to have the same level of conditions as those provided in housing. Also, dormitory students want to need more physical environment improvement than sociopsychological environment improvement.

  • This study aims to understand functional spaces within university dormitory, examine the influences of residential environment factors and personal characteristics on users' satisfaction through what parameters and probability among these parameters and seek improvement methods for dormitory users to live at dormitory as the best residential space through causal analysis of residential space uses at university dormitory based on such a probability. Research methods include theoretical research of architectural space characteristics of university dormitory facilities through literature survey, analysis of satisfaction with spaces and their uses through questionnaire and causal analysis of each residential environment factor after making route model using data obtained from the results of analysis. The results of this study are as follows. Factors affecting residents' satisfaction with cultural activities of residential environment factors are safety, territoriality, interior finishing and complexity and those affecting residents' educational activities are safety and amenity of space. Residential function space of university dormitory must have spatial planning that social activities including individual and small group culture and educational activities from the view of spatial territoriality and flexibility based on safety and amenity and facilities related to continuity and connection of common space and unit residential space should be decentralized rather than centralized.

  • The study is focused on making space of the abolished primary school for college dormitory in rural area which has regional type nearby city. We, firstly, analysed regional conditions and then surveyed various data for space conditions of dormitory. By surveying exterior space and interior renovation, and analysing the actual conditions of dormitory, we propose design factors and model of using facilities of the abolished primary school. So, the purpose of it is to suggest making space and a model of dormitory utilization of abolished school in regional type nearby city. It is a spacial case of re-using facilities of abolished school in rural area, but we expect that abolished school make an offer another type of using facilities.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest the idea for IAQ improvement of university dormitory through space analysis and residents' evaluation. The data was collected from 105 Konkuk university dormitory residents by a questionnaire survey. As a result, the idea for IAQ improvement of university dormitory can be suggested. First, it was found that it was necessary to improve size of windows and to exchange bathroom exhaust system for ventilation. Secondly, it is important for resident to ventilate and clean their room. Thirdly, the educational program for dormitory residents about maintenance of IAQ was esssentially needed. Also, it is necessary to manage air conditioning equipment maintenance and bathroom hygiene.

  • This study aims to suggest design data for planning university dormitories to meet the needs of the occupants' through field survey and questionnaire survey at the sampled dormitories in A University in 2006. and the purpose of this study is to suggest program of the suitable common space in the dormitory buildings on campus, especially referred to newly built dormitory of A university. In conclusion, Living space accounts for 56.17%, studying space accounts for 1.86%, well-being support space accounts for 2.49%, convenience support space accounts for 8.35%, management space accounts for 3.08% of the whole area in the program of newly built dormitory.
