  • In double-suction centrifugal pumps, it was found that cavitation instabilities occur with vibration and a periodic chugging noise. The present study attempts to identify cavitation instabilities in the double-suction centrifugal pump by the experiment and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Cavitation instabilities in the tested pump were classified into three types of instabilities. The first one, in a range of cavitation number higher than breakdown cavitation number, is cavitation surge with a violent pressure oscillation. The second one, in a range of cavitation number higher than the cavitation number of cavitation surge, is considered to be rotating cavitation and causes the pressure oscillation due to the interaction of rotating cavitation with the impeller. Last one, in a range of cavitation number higher than the cavitation number of rotating cavitation, is considered to be a surge type instability.

  • Pump casing has blockage effects on Impeller flow in a centrifugal pump such that the flow field around volute tongue has quite large change when the impeller rotates. A double suction pump is widely used in industrial world because it has lower NPSH required than a single suction pump. Thus, in this study, the interaction between impeller and volute casing has been investigated by using CFD for a double-suction centrifugal pump. Quasi-steady method and full pump model has been employed for the numerical calculation.

  • Flow analysis was carried out for a double-suction centrifugal pump. Impeller-only models and a full pump model were used to simulate the velocity field and the pressure field of the pump. Heads and efficiencies were calculated with flow rates in order to obtain general performance of the pump. The calculation results were compared to the experimental data, and satisfactory results were obtained. Thus, it may be said that the CFD serves as a useful tool for pump designs.

  • Dynamic forces due to mechanical and hydraulic related causes are always exerted on operating turbomachinery such as centrifugal pumps. To ensure the safety and the reliability of the pump. the magnitudes of the vibration must be kept within an acceptable limit. The focus of this paper is on the identification of the vibration behavior and the quantitative analysis of the hydraulic excitation forces. As the structure becomes more complex finite element analysis is essential to accurately predict the vibration characteristics and the excitation forces, This paper presents an experimental and analytical technique to find and solve to vibration problems in double volute double suction centrifugal pump. Measured vibration data due to the dynamic forces are presented and individual causes are identified, finally excitation forces of the pump are inversely estimated at each frequency on operating conditions.

  • Based on the consideration that the cavitation would affect the operation stability of miniature pumps, the 3-D turbulent cavitating flow in a test pump was simulated by using a mixed cavitation model and k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model. In order to investigate the influence of inlet geometry parameters on the cavitation performance of the miniature pump, two more impellers are designed for comparison. Based on the results, the following conclusions are drawn: 1) Cavitation performance of the double suction shaft-less miniature pump having different impeller is equivalent to the centrifugal pump having ordinary size, though the flow passage at impeller inlet is small; 2) The miniature pump having radial impeller can produce much higher pump head, but lower cavitation performance than that having the impeller based on the conventional design method; 3) It is believed that by applying the double suction design, the miniature pump achieved relatively uniform flow pattern upstream the impeller inlet, which is favorable for improving cavitation performance.

  • A numerical simulation is carried out to investigate the effect of flow rate variation and performance characteristics of double-suction centrifugal pump. Two types of pump which have different impeller inlet breadth and curvature of the shroud line consist of six blades impeller and shroud ring. Finite-volume method with structured mesh and $k-\omega$ Shear Stress Transport turbulence model was used to guaranty more accurate prediction of turbulent flow in the pump impeller. Total head, power and overall efficiency were calculated to obtain performance characteristics of two types of pump according to the variation of flow rate. From the results, impeller having smooth curve along the shroud line obtained good performance. The lower flow rate, the more circulation region, flow unsteadiness and complicate flow pattern are observed. Complicated internal flow phenomena through impellers such as flow separation, pressure loss, flow unsteadiness and performance are investigated and discussed.

  • A performance prediction method is presented for single(double) suction centrifugal pumps with a review of loss correlations given in the previous open literature. Most of the loss analyses mentioned in the present study are one dimensional and this paper investigates several modeling schemes and shows that a fairly good prediction can be achieved by a proper selection of the most important flow parameters resulting from a mean streamline analysis. Predictions of the trends of total head- capacity and pump efficiency-capacity curves agree well with the experimental data in almost the full range of operating conditions. The prediction method developed through this study can serve as a tool to ensure good matching between parts and it can assist the understanding of the operational characteristics of general purpose centrifugal pumps.

  • Investigation results are presented fur the shaft end displacements due to the elastic deformation of the casing and support in double suction centrifugal pump. Suction and discharge nozzles of the pump are subject to external piping loads and, in API 610, maximum values of their components are specified. This means that each nozzle can be subject to various combinations of loading conditions. Considering upper and lower criteria of each load, we must perform for the 4,096 load cases, and assign the direction and range of the loads. So, this paper develops an efficient procedure(Compliance Coefficient Method) to calculate the shaft end displacements(@ coupling) to determine whether satisfying the pump's standard. Also, we analyzed the effects of the casing and support thickness on shaft end displacements.

  • This paper presents a method of the optimum design for rotating shaft of centrifugal pump. That is, the object is to optimize the system in stability at the operating speed, unbalance response in the vicinity of the rotor critical speed, leakage flow of the seals. The objective function is composed of these three elements and is minimized by changing seal cleareance, diamoters, and lengths. A typical double suction centrifugal pump is analyzed and its objective function is presented. Then the optimum dimensions of seals are obtained, and vibration characteristics at both initial and optimum conditions are investigated.

  • To investigate the influence of blade profiles on cavitation behavior in impeller of centrifugal pump, a centrifugal pump with five different blade profiles impellers are studied numerically. The impellers with five different blade profiles (single arc, double arcs, triple arcs, logarithmic spiral and linear-variable angle spiral) were designed by the in-house hydraulic design code using geometric parameters of IS 150-125-125 centrifugal pump. The experiments of the centrifugal pump have been conducted to verify numerical simulation model. The numerical results show that the blade profile lines has a weak effect on cavitation inception near blade inlet edge position, however it has the key effect on the development of sheet cavitation in impeller, and also influences the distribution of sheet cavitation in impeller channels. A slight changing of blade setting angle will induce significant difference of cavitation in impeller. The sharp changing of impeller blade setting angle causes obvious cavitation region separation near the impeller inlet close to blade suction surface and much more flow loss. The centrifugal pump with blade profile of setting angle gently changing (logarithmic spiral) has the super cavitation performance, which means smaller critical cavitation number and lower vapor cavity volume fraction at the same conditions.
