  • We show that a simple double-slit experimental setup can be used to measure the thickness of a transparent thin film. The phase difference between the light passing through one slit covered with photoresist film and that passing through the other slit without film was estimated using the simple Fraunhofer diffraction formula for a double slit. Our method gave error of a few percent or less for film thicknesses ranging from 0.7 to 1.7 ㎛, demonstrating that a laboratory double-slit experimental setup can be utilized in practical film-thickness measurements.

  • An theoretical analysis on the electro-osmotic flow in a 2-dimensional slit, that is induced by an external electric field acting on the electrical double layers near the slit wall, was performed. Especially, although there were many studies on the interacting electrical double layers, it was found in this study that they have several physical or mathematical fallacies. To resolve these, the general solution on the charge-regulating slit with the height as a parameter was obtained. The results of this work can provide the electrokinetic solution of nanoscale slit with the electrical double layer interaction as well as that of microscale slit without the interaction and can be used as the benchmark of a numerical analysis and the reference of electrokinetic flow path design.

  • Near-field properties of light emanated from a subwavelength double slit of finite length in a thin metal film, which is essential for understanding fundamental physical mechanisms for near-field optical beam manipulations and various potential nanophotonic device applications, is investigated by using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. Near-field intensity distribution along the propagation direction of light after passing through the slit has been obtained from the phase relation of transverse electric and magnetic fields and the wave impedance. It is found that the near field of emerged light from the both slits is evanescent, that is consistent with conventional surface plasmon localization near the metal surface. Due to the finite of the slit, the amplitude of this evanescent field does not monotonically approach to than of the infinite slit as the slit length increases, i.e. the near-field of the longer slit along the center line can be weaker than that of the shorter one.

  • In this paper, a novel wideband crossed planar monopole antenna with the double resonance characteristics is proposed. The proposed monopole antenna consists of a wideband crossed planar monopole antenna and L-shaped slits. In order to generate double resonance characteristics on the proposed monopole antenna, the length of L-shaped slit on the antenna surface is obtained from the quarter-wavelength of the second resonance frequency The double resonance characteristics of the proposed antenna can be easily designed by the control of length of L shaped slit at an interesting frequency. The proposed antenna having an omnidirectional radiation pattern and a high gain over the double resonance frequency bands, respectively, is suitable for mobile multiband antenna.

  • A steel slit shear wall has vertical slits and when it is under lateral loads, the section between these slits has double-curvature deformation, and by forming a flexural plastic hinge at the end of the slit, it dissipates the energy on the structure. In this article, Experimental, numerical and analytical analyses are performed to study the effect of slit shape and edge stiffener on the behavior of steel slit shear wall. Seismic behavior of three models with different slit shapes and two models with different edge stiffener shapes are studied and compared. Hysteresis curves, energy dissipation, out of plane buckling, initial stiffness and strength are discussed and studied. The proposed slit shape reduces the initial stiffness, increases the strength and energy dissipation. Also, edge stiffener shape increases the initial stiffness significantly.

  • Recently, some attempts to construct slit caisson-type breakwaters are made in Korea. Since slit caisson-type breakwaters are suitable for relatively deep sea areas, a lot of theoretical and experimental researches have been performed. In this study, the reflection characteristics of vertical slit caisson breakwaters are investigated based on the measured data in two-dimensional hydraulic model tests with irregular waves. The experiments were conducted for various cases; variation of porosity of perforated-wall, width of wave chamber, number of slits for single-and double-chamber, respectively. It is found that in the case when the wave steepness (H/L$_{s}$ ) is small, the reflection coefficients are large. The existing researches have shown that the wave reflection is minimized when the nondimensional width of wave chamber B/L is about 0.2~0.25 for the regular waves. However, for the irregular waves the reflection is lowest when $B/L_2$, is 0.13~0.15. For a same porosity condition, the wave dissipation is stronger as the width of s1it is larger. The double-chamber caisson is superior to single- chamber caisson in the wave dissipating effects.

  • We measured the thickness and refractive index of a thin film using a double-slit diffraction experiment. The amount of phase step in the transmitted light generated by the thin film on the transparent substrate was measured by analyzing the diffraction pattern from the double slits. Experiments were conducted not only in air but also in distilled water, to determine thickness and refractive index simultaneously. To verify the validity of this method, we compared our values for thickness and refractive index to those measured using the well-established waveguide-coupling method. The suggested method is expected to be applied as a new method to simultaneously measure the thickness and refractive index of thin films, along with existing methods.

  • Since the Abbe number is a value representing the chromatic dispersion of a transparent optical medium, its measurement is essential for multicolor or white light applications of an optical medium. In this study, the Abbe number in a transparent organic thin film was measured through a simple double-slit experiment, and the results agreed with that calculated from a known dispersion formula for this medium. Unlike conventional methods that calculate the Abbe number from the refractive indices measured at three specific wavelengths using dedicated equipment, the method proposed in this study is a very simple experiment to obtain the Abbe number of new optical media without measuring the refractive indices. We demonstrated that experiments at the undergraduate optics level can be utilized to measure the chromatic dispersion of optical media.
