A Study on the Development of Dredge Process Management System (준설공정관리시스템 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Accuracy of dredging processes depends on the types of equipment used, the sediments encountered, whether the work to be performed is new or maintenance dredging, pre- and post-hydrographic surveying and so forth. Among those, position surveying accuracy which is directly determined by the control of the dredge's position and depth surveying accuracy being surveyed at the dredging point during dredging work are important factors. The purpose of this study is to develop 'Dredge Management System'for Grab dredge which is composed of 4 sub-system using LADGPS for dredge position determining system and dredging point determining system, tide gauge system and optical sensor for depth determining system and GIS and ENC for total management system. This system is installed on the grab dredge 'EUNJIN G-18'and applied to anchorage dredging work. at Pohang Harbor. The results revealed that this system is easy to operate, achieves good accuracy with only 45cm unevenness, reduces working period by 22 percent and saves cost 16.6 percent.

Abundance Estimation of the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab, Callinectes sapidus

  • This study is to estimate abundance of the Chesapeake Bay blue crab stock. Using 823 dredge tows which were conducted during the 1991 winter survey, blue crab abundance was estimated on the basis of newly developed methods which account for unequal dredge tow distances, size- and sex-specific heterogeneous overwintering spatial distributions, wintertime exploitation, the time period of quasi-hibernation, and dredge capture efficiency. The estimate of total abundance before correction by gear efficiency was 131.8 million crabs $(95\%\;C.I.\;=\;118.2\;million\;crabs\;to\;145.4\;million\;crabs),$ Dredge capture efficiency was estimated to be 0.474. Thus, the estimate of total abundance was calculated as 278.1 million crabs after correction by the efficiency factor.

  • In order to perform scientific evaluation of dredge results, it is needed to construct the system which is able to manage and evaluate the work process by monitoring in real-time the dredge process such as dredge ship position, dredge depth and dredge volume. This research aims to develop the hydrographic dredge surveying system adding water depth measurement method to both precise positioning and navigation methods using GPS, which allows a high rate of measurement and long distances between the control point and dredging points, operate in all weather conditions, and does not require line of sight to points. We constructed Beacon DGPS-based hydrographic dredger guidance and position management system and developed the operation program which makes the dredge operation perform as monitoring work situation in real-time. It is expected that this developed system will be able to contributes to reducing ultimately the cost in hydrographic dredging or hydrographic construction industries.

  • Efficiency of dredging work depends on the types of equipment used, the sediments encountered, whether the work to be performed is new or for maintenance, pre and/or post hydrographic surveying and so forth. Among those, surveying accuracy which is directly determined by the control of the dredge's position and depth surveying accuracy being surveyed at the dredging point are important factors. The purpose of this study is to develop an integrated process management system for pump dredge. The system is composed of 4 sub-systems such as LADGPS for dredge positioning dredging point determination, tidal gauge and angular depth sensor for depth determination, and GIS and ENC process management. The process management system for pump dredge developed was installed on the pump dredge "EUNJIN PD-2" but is now producing work data for comparison with performance of the existing dredge. The data retrieved from the pump dredge process management system up to now shows similar result from the grab dredge management system which was developed previously. It is easy to operate, achieves good accuracy with only 45cm unevenness, reduces working perioa by 20 percint,. More precise evaluation of the system comes later after the dredging work is completed.completed.

The improvement of the shellfish dredge vessel in Jeonnam province (전남 지역의 패류 형망어선의 개량)

  • This study is aimed to develop an improved shellfish dredge vessel considering the increase of the fishing safety and welfare of fishermen in Jeonnam province. We visited five fishing village societies in Korea, and conducted field surveys and survey questions to investigate the current status. In order to solve the problems presented by the investigation, a general arrangement of the improvement vessel was written and adopted after meeting between the fishermen and research team, and calculated the initial stability in five loading conditions by using the Napa program. As a result of field surveys and survey questions, the existing vessel have buoyant materials under the bow and the warp pass through the wheel-house. In addition, most fishing equipment and nets are concentrated on a narrow stern, making it difficult to work efficiently. According to the survey, fishermen also responded that operation of casting and hauling is very inconvenient. The fishing equipment of the improvement vessel was rearranged, the size of the wheel-house and the crew room was increased, and we secured a basic welfare space. As a result of the initial stability test, the stability criteria of the fishing vessel were satisfied in all loading condition.

The Selection of Appropriate Sampler for the Assessment of Macrobenthos Community in Saemangeum, the West Coast of Korea (새만금 외해역에서 대형 저서동물 군집 조사를 위한 적정 채집기의 선택)

  • To select an appropriate sampler for the environmental monitoring survey in coastal waters of Saemangeum, Jeollabuk-do, a macrobenthic sampling was conducted in April 2002. Employed samplers were dredge (type Charcot), a semi-quantitative sampler and Smith-McIntyre (SM) and van Veen grab (VV) as quantitative ones. One haul was tried for dredge and 3 replicates (0.1 ㎡${\times}$3) for SM and W at each of 11 stations. Comparisons of sediment volume in sampler bucket and of precision of biological parameters (i.e., density, biomass, species number and diversity index, H') were made between SM and VV. Sediment volume was significantly different (SM > VV) at p-value of 0.0050 (paired t-test) and, in average, 3 replicate samples of SM and VV satisfied a precision level of 0.2 by applying 4th root transformation. Patterns of observed and expected species numbers and H' were compared. Dredge-VV samples showed higher affinity than any other pair. Several dominant species in the area were underestimated in dredge samples (e.g., polychaete Heteromastus filiformis. Aricidea assimilis etc.). Quantifying the agreement pattern of multi-species responses was accomplished by estimating correlations between similarity matrices. Correlation between dredge and VV was slightly higher, but near-per-fect matches were found in general. Different ranks and composition among principal species lists were presumably linked to the effect of penetration depth that differs among samplers. Lower level of some species' abundance in VV samples (ca. 50% compared with those of SM) was explained in this context. It seem appropriate to regard the effect as a probable cause of relatively higher correlations in dredge-VV, Overall bio-logica1 features indicated that a better choice could be SM in situations of requiring high data quality. The others work well, however, on observing and defining faunal characteristics and their capability cannot be questionted if we do not expect a first-order quality.

Community Structure of Fisheries Resources Caught by Dredge in the Uljin Marine Ranching Area, Korea (울진바다목장에서 형망으로 어획된 수산자원의 군집구조)

  • To elucidate the variation of species composition, biomass and size distribution of fishery resource in the Uljin marine ranching area was investigated at the 4 stations from 2009 to 2010 based on the dredge sampling. During the survey period, a total of 41 fishery resource species were sampled with a mean density of $2,554,633\;ind./km^2$ and mean biomass was $32,946kg/km^2$. A total 36 fishery resource species were sampled with a mean density of $3,198,793\;ind./km^2$ and mean biomass $41,177kg/km^2$ in 2009 and it were sampled a total 31 species, mean $1,910,473kg/km^2$ and $24,716kg/km^2$ in 2010. The major individual-dominant species, occupying over 1% of total individuals, were Gomphina veneriformis (2,491,818 ind., 82.2%), Umbonium costatum (221,973 ind., 8.7%), Mactra chinensis (49,879 ind., 2.0%), Glossaulax didyma hayashii (49,879 ind., 1.9%), Blepharipoda liberate (37,714 ind., 1.5%) and Paguridae spp. (27,266 ind., 1.1%). The major biomass-dominant species, occupying over 1% of total biomass, were G. veneriformis (25,124 kg, 76.3%), G. didyma hayashii (2,596 kg, 7.9%), M. chinensis (2,024 kg, 6.1%), Ovalipes punctatus (921 kg, 2.8%) and Glossaulax didyma didyma (567 kg, 1.7%). From the cluster analysis based on Bray-Curtis similarity matrix of fourth root transformed data of species number and individuals was divided into 2 different groups of the fishery resource community (Group A-St.1, Group B-Sts. 2, 3, 4). The 2009 and 2010 mean Shell length (mm) of G. veneriformis was 37.73 mm, 29.76 mm and M. chinensis was 62.03 mm, 44.94 mm, respectively.

  • Many reservoirs have been constructed for sustainable utilization of water resources in Korea. Effective management of water resources in Korea becomes very important in resent years. Especially, the dredging in reservoirs is important for effective water resources management and one in easy water resources security methods. According to "The reservoir dredging mid-long term planning investigation report", it was investigated that 1221 reservoirs need to dredge among 3,288 reservoirs managed by KARICO. And, KARICO made a survey of reservoirs for the sediment and storage change in $2002{\sim}2004$. In results, it was investigated total storage $1,406{\pm}10^6m^3$, effective storage $1,344{\pm}10^6m^3$ in mid-small 2,748 reservoirs and the storage ratio decreased total storage ratio 15.7%, effective storage ratio 4.4%.

Difference in biomasses depending on apllication of speed over the ground and speed through the water during biomass estimation of Metapenaeus joyneri via swept area methods (소해면적법에 의한 중하(Metapenaeus joyneri) 자원량 추정 시 대지속력과 대수속력 사용에 따른 자원량 차이)

  • The towing distance, which is speed over the ground, and the water flow quantity, which is speed through the water, were used when estimating the amount of Metapenaeus joyneri resources that rose to the surface at night using the swept area method in order to compare and analyze the difference. It was conducted using a shrimp dredge, trial fishing gear for catching Metapenaeus joyneri. Catch during the entire survey period was 188.9 kg. Monthly catch ranged from 3.1 to 109.2 kg, highest in June and lowest in September. The swept volume calculated using the speed over the ground was about 13% higher than using the speed through the water. Metapenaeus joyneri resources estimated using the towing distance ranged from 320.1 to 14,649.8 kg. Resources estimated using the water flow quantity ranged from 278.5 to 12,886.3 kg. Therefore, the amount of Metapenaeus joyneri resources estimated using the speed over the ground was about 14% higher than the method using the speed through the water, indicating that the amount of resources was overestimated.

Annual changes of fisheries production in the shore of Jeonbuk Province, Korea (전북연안 어업자원생산량의 경년변화)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine annual changes of coastal fisheries production in the shore of Jeonbuk Province in Korea. The catch data of an experimental vessel that used dredge nets were used to study fish species and catch per unit of fishing effort carried out from April 2002 to November 2004. The total number of fish species caught in 2002 was 23, and 15 in 2004. Total number of individuals were 6,008 and their total weight was 376.38 kg in 2002. In 2004, total number of fishes was 2,469, and their weight was 211.99 kg. The annual changes in fisheries production in the western coast of Korea were also analyzed from 1990 to 2007. The total near shore fisheries products in Korea has been relatively stable around 1,4000,000 metric tons to 1,8000,000 tons during this period. Similarly the Chungnam Province's annual fish catch had steadily risen from about 51,187 tons in 1990 to 85,637 tons in 2007. However, Jeonbuk Province's annual fish catch declined dramatically at around 133, 000 tons in 1990 to 45,000 tons in 2007. In summery, while the overall Korea's fisheries production has been stable over the past decade, that of Jeonbuk Province suffered drastic decline in the period. This decline was reflected in the decreased number of fish species, total individuals, and total catch in surverys performed with an experimental vessel.
