  • The size distribution and number concentration of atmospheric aerosol were measured and compared using APS 3321 and Dust Monitor 1.108. The particle size distribution and number concentration measured by two devices were also compared at a particle generation system of standard PSL and fly ash. The number concentration of atmospheric aerosol measured by APS was higher than that by Dust Monitor in particle size range of less than $3.0{\mu}m$, but there was good accordance between them in particle size range of over $3.0{\mu}m$. In the particle generation system of PSL and fly ash, different measurement results were shown because the particle concentration was higher than that of atmospheric aerosol. The number concentration measured by Dust Monitor was higher than that by APS in most particle size ranges. However, the peak concentration of PSL particles measured by Dust Monitor was lower than that by APS. The difference of the collection efficiency in a scrubber by APS and Dust Monitor measurement was less than 10%, but in the particle size of $1.5{\mu}m$, it was over 20%.

  • In this study, we have developed a real-time monitoring device for measuring PM10 and PM2.5 of ambient aerosol particles. The real-time PM monitor (SENTRY Dust Monitor) uses the optical scattering method and has 16 channels in particle size. The laboratory and field tests were carried out to evaluate the developed SENTRY Dust Monitor. Arizona Test Dust particles were used as test particles in the laboratory test and the field test was carried out at the Jongno-gu Observatory in Seoul. The measurements of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations obtained by SENTTRY Dust Monitor were compared with Grimm Dust Monitor (Model 1.108) and a beta ray gauge. It was shown that the PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations obtained by SENTRY Dust Monitor agree well with that of the reference devices. Based on the results obtained in this study, it could be concluded that the SENTRY Dust Monitor can be used as a PM monitoring device for real-time monitoring of the ambient aerosols.

  • Dust-storm is one of the heaviest hazardous weather which frequently affects most part of northern China in spring. Satellite multi-spectral observations can provide significant information for detecting and quantitative determining the property of dust-storm . An algorithm to monitor dust-storm automatically was developed based on satellite observation. The algorithm utilizes split widows technique and spectral classification technique and also developed a new dust remote sensing product Infra -red Difference Dust Index (IDDI) proxy dust-loading dataset using GMS-5.

  • In order to calculate the aerosol bulk densities of $PM_{1.0}$ and $PM_{10}$, aerosol mass and number concentrations were measured for the period of December 2008~April 2009. $PM_{1.0}$ and $PM_{10}$ mass concentrations were measured using a cascade impactor (Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor, MOUDI) while their volume concentrations were calculated based on number concentrations from an environmental dust monitor (EDM). Normal aerosol size distribution fitting functions were retrieved for number size distribution since aerosols < $2.5{\mu}m$ were measured from the EDM. Strong correlation was found between $PM_{1.0}$ mass and volume concentrations obtained with a $R^2$ of 0.95. The calculated average bulk densities of $PM_{1.0}$ and $PM_{10}$ were $1.97{\pm}0.33g/cm^3$ and $2.15{\pm}0.18g/cm^3$, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate student exposures to dust in classroom of middle schools. A total of four schools, such as two in an urban and two in a rural area, were selected for this study. In this study, airborne dust concentrations were measured during a period from July 8 to July 18, 1986. Additional measurements of dust concentrations were conducted from November 4 to 7, 1986 to compare the results by seasonal variation. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Respirable dust concentrations were measured by both filtration method (C mg/m$^3$) and Digital Aerosol Monitor (cpm) to calculate anexchange factor K. K- value was 0.159 as follows. $K=\frac{c}{cpm} = \frac{2.71}{17.09} = 0.159$ 2. In summer when windows were opened, the concentrations of airborne respirable dusts measured by filter sampling method were 0.54-1.37 mg/m$^3$ in the morning and 0.79-1.75 mg/m$^3$ in the afternoon. Thus, higher levels were indicated in the afternoon. Meanwhile, the concentrations of airborne respirable dusts measured in winter were approximately twice as high as those in summer. 3. The highest dust concentrations were determined in School D which is a coeducational school with classroom of concrete floor. Walking roads in School D were not paved and students did not wear indoor-shoes. Dust levels in School D were approximately twice as high as levels in School B. All of the measured dust levels in four schools exceeded Korean Standard for outdoor air, 0.3 mg/m$^3$ for 24 hours. Results by Digital Aerosol Monitor indicated that there was no significant difference in dust levels among grades. The concentration of airborne dusts in the classroom was 1.5-3.0 times higher than that in the hall way. The concentration of airborne dusts during recess was 1.3-1.6 times higher than that during class. In winter, the dust concentrations during clean-up exceeded the permissible exposure limit, 10 mg/m$^3$ (as total dusts), for occupational exposures. 4. The concentrations of total dusts measured in winter were 1.5-2.4 times higher than those of respirable dusts measured simultaneously.

  • In an advanced modern society, among air pollutants caused by urban industrialization and public transportation, fine dust flows into indoors from the outdoors. The fine dust meter used indoors provides limited information and measures the pollution level differently, so there is a problem that users cannot monitor and monitor the data they want. To solve this problem, in this paper, indoor air quality data fine dust and ultra-fine dust (PM1.0, PM2.5, PM10), VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and PIR (Passive Infrared Sensor) are used to measure fine dust. and a monitoring system were designed and implemented. We propose a fine dust meter and monitoring system that is installed in a designated area to measure fine dust in real time, collects, stores, and visualizes data through App Engine of Google Cloud Platform and provides it to users.

  • In this study, we have developed a real-time monitoring device for measuring $PM_{10/2.5/1}$ of ambient aerosol particles. The real-time PM (Particulate Matter) monitor was based on the light scattering method and had 16 channels in particle size. The laboratory and field tests were carried out to evaluate the performance of the PM monitor developed. Arizona Road Dust particles ranging from diameter of 0.1 to $20{\mu}m$ were generated as test particles in the laboratory test. The field test was carried out at the Seoul Meteorological Observatory. We can obtain the particle size and number concentration (particle size distribution) only from the real-time PM monitor developed. Therefore, the average density of aerosol particles was used to obtain the PM data from the particle size distribution. The $PM_{10/2.5/1}$ results of the PM monitor were compared with the data of the Grimm Dust Monitor (Model 1.108) and a beta ray gauge (Thermo Fisher Scientific). As a result, it was shown that the $PM_{10/2.5/1}$ results obtained by the real-time PM monitor agreed well with the data of the reference devices, and overall, the real-time PM monitor could be used as a PM monitoring device for real-time monitoring of the ambient particles.

  • Fugitive dust, which accounts more than 50% of fine dust, is an air pollutant, that is generated by a lot in construction work(29.5%) and the law provides standards for facility installation and measures to control this. However, small-scale construction sites are not subject to management standards, and the law to measure and manage fugitive dust generated from construction sites is insufficient. In this paper, we designed and implemented the method to easily measure and monitor fugitive dust using the digital optical method for turbidity of dust. We presented the method to measure the turbidity of fugitive dust using the digital optical method and measured the actual turbidity of fugitive dust at the construction sites after implementing the fugitive dust measurement system.

  • The use of smart equipment such as drones is increasing in construction sites. In particular, there are frequent cases where two or more drones must be used at the same time. This leads to different considerations than when operating a single unit. This study aims to analyze the requirements to be considered in the case of the operation of drones that monitor fine dust and drones that reduce fine dust in order to reduce fine dust generated in construction sites.

  • Presently, mobile diesel equipments contribute a lot to improve the economic feasibility of underground mining and tunneling operations. Even in Korea, a lot of diesel equipments are being applied to the undergroud workings already, but the technology of management and control of them is not sufficient yet. This study handled the production procedure, characteristics and evaluation technology on diesel particulate matte(DPM) which is known as a carcinogen. For easy measurement of DPM using laser dust monitor, conversion known as a carcinogen. For easy measurement of DPM using laser dust monitor, conversion factor(k) to gravimetric concentration has been acquired. It is appeared that the critical material among the diesel exhaust pollutants is becoming DPM instead of NOx from this year of 1996 according to the Government regulation.
