  • Micro drilling characteristics by EDM method was investigated. In detail, Micro tool electrode for EDM drilling was machined by use of WEDG method and micro hole was drilled using the machined tool electrode in SUS plate. The machining accuracy and time was compared in a different dielectric fluid. As a result, it was convinced that this method could be utilized as a fabrication technology of micro mold or micro 3 dimensional parts.

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of the sintered carbide and die steel by electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. Electrical discharge machining(EDM) removes material from the workpiece by a series of electrical sparks that cause localized temperatures high enough to melt or vaporise the metal in the vicinity of the charge. In the experiment, four types of electrode which have different diameter are used with the application of continuous direct current and axial electrode feed. The controlled factors include the dimension of the electrode. In drilling by EDM, the dielectric flushed down the interior of the rotating tube electrode, in order to facilitate the removal of machining debris from the hole.

  • The first stage rotating blade of industrial gas turbine is one of the components that is normally run in exposed state at the highest temperature of the combustion gas stream. For this reason superior materials and advanced cooling technology are required to allow higher heat resisting characteristics of the component. The 1st stage blade of a selected commercial gas turbine blade made of directionally solidified Ni-based superalloy has a row of cooling holes on its trailing edge. In most cases, minor cracks have been found at some of the root cooling holes after one cycle operation (24,000 hrs) or even shorter operation time because of the high temperature gradient and the frequently alternating thermal stress. In the repair process, unfortunately, it is usually very difficult to get rid of the damage due to the fact that cracks are initiated at the root cooling hole and propagated deep into the hole. In this study, the feasibility of removing the sidewall cracks in the hole by utilizing EDM drilling has been investigated. Also the criteria of surface integrity for EDM drilling were established to achieve high quality repair as well as machining accuracy.

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of the MoSi$_2$-based composites by electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. MoSi$_2$-based composites has been developed in new materials for jet engine of supersonic-speed airplanes and gas turbine for high- temperature generator. By combining a nonconducting ceramics with more conducting ceramic it was possible to raise the electrical conductivity. In drilling by EDM, the dielectric flushed down the interior of the rotating tube electrode, in order to facilitate the removal of machining debris from the hole. Various metal-coated tubular electrodes of which core are copper and brass are used to know the effect of coating material on machinability of ED drilling.

  • This is the pre-study to pile up the basic technique for the electro-discharge machining in the field of micro-drilling. The machined chips are flowed out from the machining area by the flow arisen from the high speed rotation of the electrode. The cylindrical shape electrode, whose diameter is 0.5mm, is clamped by the three point clamping type clamper and the clamper is attached at the front shaft of the high speed rotating DC motor. The current for machining is controlled by pulse width modulation technique and the machining conditions such as frequency and duty ratio are changed to find out the effect of the variables for machined results.

  • Electrical discharge machining is the method of using thermal energy by electrical discharge. Generally, if the material of workpiece has conductivity even though very hard materials and complicated shape which are difficult to cut such as quenching steel, cemented carbide, diamond and conductive ceramics, the EDM process is favorable one of possible machining processes. But, the process is necessarily required of finish cut and heat treatment because of slow cutting speed, no mirror surface, brittleness and crack due to the residual stress for manufactured goods. In this experimental thesis, the super EDM drilling was developed for high precision semiconductor die steel and for minimization of leadframe width. It was possible to development of EDM drilling machine for high precision semiconductor die with the electrode guide and its modelling and stress analysis. The development of electrode with the copper pipe type was conducted to drill the hole from the diameter of 0.1mm to 3.0mm with the error of from 0.02mm to 0.12mm. From the SEM and EDX analysis, the entrance of the EDM drill was found the resolidification of not only the component of tungsten but also the component of copper.

  • Electric discharging machining (EDM) is commonly adopted to machine the precise and tiny part when it is difficult to meet the productivity and the tolerance by the conventional cutting method. The die-sinking EDM method works well to machine the micro-parts and the perpendicular wall of die and mould, whereas EDM drilling, called super drill, is excellent to machine the deep and narrow hole regardless the material hardness and the hole location. However, the electrode wear is rapid compared to the conventional cutting tool and makes it difficult to control the electrode feeding and to machine precisely. This paper presents an efficient method to estimate the electrode wear using hole pass-through experiment while the stochastic method is used to compensate for the estimation model. To validate the proposed method, the commercial EDM drill machine is used. The experiment result shows that the electrode wear amount can be predicted very precisely.

  • The electrode wear in micro-EDM significantly deteriorates the machining accuracy. In this regard, electrode wear needs to be compensated in-process to improve the product quality. Therefore, there are substantial amount of research about electrode wear. In this study a control method for micro-EDM using discharge pulse counting is proposed. The method is based on the assumption that the removed workpiece volume is proportional to the number of discharge pulses, which is verified from experimental results analyzing geometrically machined volume according to various number of discharges. Especially, the method has an advantage that electrode wear does not need to be concerned. The proposed method is implemented to an actual micro-EDM system using high speed data acquisition board, simple counting algorithm with 3 axis motion system. As a result, it is demonstrated that the volume of hole machined by EDM drilling can be accurately estimated using the number of discharge pulses. In EDM milling process a micro groove without depth variation caused by electrode wear could be machined using the developed control method. Consequently, it is shown that machining accuracy in drilling and milling processes can be improved by using process control based on the number of discharge pulses.

  • Metal Matrix Composite(MMC) material of 30% SiC particulate based on A1 matrix was machined by drilling and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) processes. When drilling process was executed, surface fracture due to brittle property near the bottom was found. It was also found the possiblity of difficult shape of EDM process for MMC material, but few the research about basic EDM characteristics. Material Removal Rate(MRR) was examined for different conditions and the surface morphology was evaluated by roughness values and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) research. The higher the current is, the more MRR was obtained but the higher MRR was showed around 0.45 duty factor. The average roughness of EDMed surface was slightly changed with increased pulse current and increases with duty factor. The SEM photographs of EDMed surface showed recast region after melting.
