  • For generating accurate land cover map over the whole Korean Peninsula, post-mosaic classification method is desirable in large area where multiple image data sets are used. We try to derive an optimal mosaic method of multi-temporal Landsat ETM+ scenes for the land cover classification over the Korea Peninsula. Total 65 Landsat ETM+ scenes were acquired, which were taken in 2000 and 2001. To reduce radiometric difference between adjacent Landsat ETM+ scenes, we apply three relative radiometric correction methods (histogram matching, 1st-regression method referenced center image, and 1st-regression method at each Landsat ETM+ path). After the relative correction, we generated three mosaic images for three seasons of leaf-off, transplanting, leaf-on season. For comparison, three mosaic images were compared by the mean absolute difference and computer classification accuracy. The results show that the mosaic image using 1st-regression method at each path show the best correction results and highest classification accuracy. Additionally, the mosaic image acquired during leaf-on season show the higher radiance variance between adjacent images than other season.

  • The soil in wildfire area Sacheon-myeon, Gangneung, Gangweon Province, Korea, were investigated to clarify pattern of the soils. The soils were classified into 5 types on the basis of vegetation, types of organic matter. thickness of soil horizons, and completeness of soil profile. Each type showed different erosion pattern and Landsat ETM image. Coverage of plant leaves, litter, root, ash and other organic matter was an important component that affected soil color and reflectance of Landsat image (digital number). Although the NDVI (Normalized Distribution Vegetation Index) method in the wildfire area did not show much difference in soil types, the applied supervised classification method showed characteristic pattern of Landsat ETM image of soil types. This study showed that the applied supervised Landsat TM image classification in wildfire area is an effective way to estimate the distribution of erosion pattern of soil in wildfire area.

  • The purpose of this study is the investigation of applicability of LSMA(Linear Spectral Mixture Analysis) on the geological uses with different radiometric and spatial types of sensor images such as Terra ASTER and LANDSAT 7 ETM+. As for the actual application case, geologic mapping for mineral exploration using ASTER and ETM+ at the Mongolian plateau region was carried out. After the pre-processing such as the geometric corrections and calibration of radiance, 7 endmembers, as spectral classes for geologic rock types, related to spectral signature deviation for the given application was determined by the pre-surveyed geological mapping information and the correlation matrix analysis, and total 20 images of ASTER and ETM+ were used to LSMA processing. As the results, fraction maps showing individual mineral types in the study area are presented. It concluded that this approach based on LSMA using ETM+ and ASTER is regarded as one of the effective schemes for geologic remote sensing.

  • Generally, structures are analyzed as continuum. However, sometimes it is more efficient to analyze structure as a discrete model rather than as a continuum model in case of the structure has complex shape or loading condition. This study, therefore, suggests an improved analysis discrete model, named Equivalent Truss Model (further as "ETM"), which can obtain similar results with analyzing continuums analysis. ETM adopts a lattice truss to compose the members of the model, and analyses the structures. As a consequence, the ETM produced the identical outcome with the continuums analysis in section force of different structures and loading conditions. Similar results have been shown in internal stress analysis as well. Make use of that ETM is discrete, fractural path of beam was analyzed by ETM and the result was reasonable.

  • The EO-1 spacecraft, launched November 21, 2000 into a sun synchronous orbit behind Landsat 7, hosts advanced technology demonstration instruments, whose capabilities are currently being assessed by the user community for future missions. A significant part of the EO-1 program is to perform data comparisons between Hyperion, ALI and Landsat 7 ETM+. In this paper, a comparison of forest classification results from Hyperion, ALI, and the ETM+ of Landsat-7 are provided for Wangqing Forest Bureau, Jilin Province, Northeast China. The data have been radiometrically corrected and geometrically resampled. Feature selection and statistical transforms are used to reduce the Hyperion feature space from 86 channels to 14 features. Classes chosen for discrimination included Larch, Spruce, Oak, Birch, Popular and Mixed forest and other landuses. Classification accuracies have been obtained for each sensor. Comparison of the classification results shows : Hyperion classification results were the best, ALI's were much better than ETM+.

  • The primary uses of SWIR bands of ASTER data are to analyze geological features. In this study, we are attempting to evaluate the effect of using the narrow band A STER data for extracting information related to biophysical information of forest vegetation. ASTER and ETM+ data have been obtained simultaneously over the study area in Kyongan-River basin on May 8, 2003. Two data sets were initially processed to reduce atmospheric effects and converted to percent reflectance values, which make them comparable each other. ASTER and ETM+ reflectance were then analyzed by using the field survey data that include forest leaf area index (LAI), cover types, species composition, and stand density. Preliminary results show that ASTER reflectance were not much different to ETM+ reflectance to explain LAI.

  • The purpose of this study was to conduct the field validation of alternative method(ETM method) by using non-carcinogenic, and less toxic solvents than NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) analytical method 5524 for measuring the airborne metalworking fluids in workplaces. We carried out the field validation test by using the exposure chamber, guaranteeing the air sampling homogeneously in a machining environment. The ETM mixed solvent presented the complete solubility of MWFs used in test field. Based on the field test data, the bias of the ETM method from reference method, NIOSH analytical method 5524, was from -7.0% to 5.1%. The overall uncertainty of the ETM nethod was 21.6%, which satisfied the NIOSH criteria for the sampling and analytical criteria.

  • Although it is more recommended to use satellite images for an accurate understanding of the natural environment over a large area, what should proceed obtaining such satellite images is to make basic model equations based firmly upon the on-land experiments and field experiments. It may be more accurate and objective to investigate correlations between satellite images and actual water quality factors obtained for the same area. Thus, this study was conducted in order to determined which band of Landsat ETM+ images is appropriate to estimate the density of chlorophyll-a in a closed laboratory without atmospheric interference, using pure water and sea water. As a result of this study, it was found that the best band that exhibited the highest degree of correlations among the compounded bands rated (B3-B4)/B2 in pure water and (B2+B4)/B3 in sea water. The correlation coefficient here is 0.9747 and 0.9892 respectively. Thus, compounding this band ran be quite useful for estimation density of Chlorophyll-a using Landsat ETM+ image data.

  • As the Imperious surface is an important index for the estimation of urbanization and environmental change, the increase of impervious surfaces causes meteorological and hydrological changes like urban climate change, urban flood discharge increasing, urban flood frequency increasing, and urban flood modelling during the rainy season. In this study, the estimation of impervious surfaces is performed by using Landsat-7 ETM+ image in An-sung area. The construction of sampling data and checking data is used by IKONOS image. It transform to a tasselled cap and NDVI through the reflexibility rate of Landsat ETM+ image and analyze various variables that influence on impervious surface. Finally, the impervious surfaces map is accomplished by regression tree algorithm.

  • Four time points of the fractional area data during the 15 years of the highest group of land surface temperature and the lowest group of NDVl of the Kunsan city Chollabuk_do, Korea located beneath the Yellow sea coast, are observed and analyzed their correlations for the intention to detect the changes of urban land cover. As long as the effective contributions of satellite images in the continuous monitoring of the wide area for wide range of time period, Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ artificial satellite images, acquisited over the Kunsan city area, are surveyed by the compared calibration after quantization and classification of the deviations between TM and ETM+ images substituted approved error correction thresholds such as gains and biases or offsets. This experiment and research applied Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ artificial satellite images in change detection of urban land cover in urbanized Kunsan city, then detected strong and proportional correlation relationship between the highest group of land surface temperature and the lowest group of NDVI which exceeded R=(+)0.9478, so the proposed Correlation Analysis Model between the highest group of land surface temperature and the lowest group of NDVI will be able to give proof an effective suitability to the land city change detection monitoring.
