We present a new scheme to increase the performance of edge-preserving image smoothing from the parameter tuning of a Markov random field (MRF) function. The method is based on automatic control of the image smoothing-strength in MRF model ing in which an introduced parameter function is based on control of enforcing power of a discontinuity-adaptive Markov function and edge magnitude resulted from discontinuities of image intensity. Without any binary decision for the edge magnitude, adaptive control of the enforcing power with the full edge magnitude could improve the performance of discontinuity-preserving image smoothing.

In this paper, we propose an efficient edge preserving smoothing filter for Infrared image that can reduce noise while preserving edge information. Infrared images suffer from low signal-to-noise ratio, low edge detail information and low contrast. So, detail enhancement and noise reduction play crucial roles in infrared image processing. We first apply a guided image filter as a local analysis. After the filtering process, we optimization globally using relativity of guided image filter. Our method outperforms the previous methods in removing the noise while preserving edge information and detail enhancement.
Penalized-likelihood (PL) reconstruction methods for transmission tomography are known to provide improved image quality for reduced dose level by efficiently smoothing out noise while preserving edges. Unfortunately, however, most of the edge-preserving penalty functions used in conventional PL methods contain at least one free parameter which controls the shape of a non-quadratic penalty function to adjust the sensitivity of edge preservation. In this work, to avoid difficulties in finding a proper value of the free parameter involved in a non-quadratic penalty function, we propose a new adaptive method of space-variant smoothing with a simple quadratic penalty function. In this method, the smoothing parameter is adaptively selected for each pixel location at each iteration by using the image roughness measured by a pixel-wise standard deviation image calculated from the previous iteration. The experimental results demonstrate that our new method not only preserves edges, but also suppresses noise well in monotonic regions without requiring additional processes to select free parameters that may otherwise be included in a non-quadratic penalty function.

In this paper, a simple contour-preserving filtering algorithm is proposed. The goal of the contour-preserving filtering method is to remove noise ad granularity as the preprocessing for the image segmentation procedure. Our method finds edge map and separates the image into the edge region and the non-edge region using this edge map. For the non-edge region, typical smoothing filters could be used to remove the noise and the small areas during the segmentation procedure. The result of simulation shows that our method is slightly better than the typical methods such as the median filtering and gradient inverse weighted filtering in the point of view of analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Most image restoration problems are ill-posed and need to e regularized. A difficult task in image regularization is to avoid smoothing of image edges. In this paper, were proposed an edge-preserving image restoration algorithm using block-based edge classification. In order to exploit the local image characteristics, we classify image blocks into edge and no-edge blocks. We then apply an adaptive constrained least squares (CLS) algorithm to eliminate noise around the edges. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can preserve image edges during the regularization process.
The edge preserving method is important for image storage and geometric transformation. In this paper, we propose a new edge preserving method using HOG-Guide filter for image segmentation. In our approach, we extract edge information using gradient histogram to set HOG guide line. Then, we use HOG guide line to smooth image. With two to four iterations of smoothing operations, we finally obtain desirable edge preserved image. Our experimental results showed good performances showing that our proposed method is better than other methods.
This paper presents a modified mean curvature diffusion filter to smooth speckle noise in images. Mean curvature diffusion filter has already shown good results in reducing noise in images while preserving fine details. In the mean curvature diffusion, the rate of smoothing is controlled by the local value of the diffusion coefficient chosen to be a function of the local image gradient magnitude. In this paper, the diffusion coefficient is modified to be controlled adaptively by local image surface slope and heterogeneity. The local surface slope contributes to preserving details (e.g.edges) in image and the local surface heterogeneity helps the smoothing filter consider the amount of noise in both edge and non-edge area. The proposed filter's performance is demonstrated by quantitative experiments using speckle noised aerial image and TerraSAR-X satellite image.

Mean curvature diffusion (MCD) is a selective smoothing technique that promotes smoothing within a region instead of smoothing across boundaries. By using mean curvature diffusion, noise is eliminated and edges are preserved. In this paper, we propose methods of automatic parameter selection and implementation for the MCD model coupled to min/max flow. The algorithm has been applied to high resolution aerial images and the results show that noise is eliminated and edges are preserved after removal of noise.
To interpret the seismic image precisely, random noises should be suppressed and the continuity of the image should be enhanced by using the appropriate smoothing techniques. Structure-Oriented Filter-Edge Preserving (SOF-EP) technique is one of the methods, that have been actively researched and used until now, to efficiently smooth seismic data while preserving the continuity of signal. This technique is based on the principle that diffusion occurs from large amplitude to small one. In a continuous structure such as a horizontal layer, diffusion or smoothing is operated along the layer, thereby increasing the continuity of layers and eliminating random noise. In addition, diffusion or smoothing across boundaries at discontinuous structures such as faults can be avoided by employing the continuity decision factor. Accordingly, the precision of the smoothing technique can be improved. However, in the case of the structure-oriented semblance technique, which has been used to calculate the continuity factor, it takes lots of time depending on the size of the filter and data. In this study, we first implemented the SOF-EP method and confirmed its effectiveness by applying it step by step to the field data. Next, we proposed and applied the corner response method which can efficiently calculate the continuity decision factor instead of structure-oriented semblance. As a result, we could confirm that the computation time can be reduced by about 6,000 times or more by applying the corner response method.
While hyperspectral data are very rich in information, their processing poses several challenges such as computational requirements, noise removal and relevant information extraction. In this paper, the application of advanced scale-space filtering to selected hyperspectral bands was investigated. In particular, a pre-processing tool, consisting of anisotropic diffusion and morphological leveling filtering, has been developed, aiming to an edge-preserving smoothing and simplification of hyperspectral data, procedures which are of fundamental importance during feature extraction and object detection. Two scale space parameters define the extent of image smoothing (anisotropic diffusion iterations) and image simplification (scale of morphological levelings). Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the developed scale space filtering for the enhancement and smoothing of hyperspectral remote sensing data and their advantage against watershed over-segmentation problems and edge detection.
