  • Songs of the Yellow-throated Bunting (Emberiza elegans) and the Gray-headed Bunting (Emberiza fucata) in allopatric populations in Gangnae-meon, Cheongwon-gun, Chungbuk in Korea, were recorded during the breeding season and analyzed in sound spectroraphs. Males of E. elegans and E. fucata were tested to investigate whether territorial males can discriminate between neighbor and stranger based on playback of natural and artificial song repertoires. In addition, E. fucata was stimulated by playback of only the individually specific section as well as of only the posterior portion of the song. Males of E. elegans were able to discriminate individually between neighbor and stranger in response to natural song repertoires, but they did not respond to playback of the artificial song repertoires of neighbor and stranger. Males of E. fucata were able to discriminate individually between neighbor and stranger in response to natural, artificial song repertoires, and the anterior section of the song, while males did not respond to playback of the posterior section of the song.

  • Stands profiles, yearly changes in growth of annual rings, age and diameter structure, and spatial distribution pattern of individuals in the Pinus densiflora stands around the Yeocheon industrial complex were investigated. Growth of annual ring in Pinus densiflora, which survived when vegetation of this area was damaged by air pollutants, was suppressed for about 10 years since 1974 when factories in this area began to operate, but since then such suppressed growth tended to be recovered. It was supposed that the suppresed growth was originated from air pollution and that improvement of growth since the suppressed period was due to the release from competition with them by death of neighbouring trees and the resuction of the amount of air pollutants. Physiognomy of Pinus densiflora stands showed mosaic pattern composed of different patches. Spatial distribution pattern of individuals an stand profiles were similar to those of Pinus densiflora stands regenerated after natural and artificial disturbances. In an age distribution diagram, age of Pinus densiflora population ranged from 1 to 33 years, Among these individuals were recrited corresponded to the suppresed period of growth of annual ring in Pinus densiflora survived when the vegetation was damaged by air pollution. On the other hand, from the result of analysis of frequency distribution diagram of diameter, it was postulated that even if whis Pinus densiflora community can be maintained as it is for the time being, it might be changed to Quercus community with the lapse of time. Regeneration; Pinus densiflora; Air pollution; Annual ring; Age structure; Diameter structure; Quercus spp. In these analyses, factors for individual recognition and species recognition were suggested.

  • From a population in Kang-Nae, Cheong-won, Chung-Buk, acoustic behaviours of Gray-headed Bunting (Emberizo fucata) were obsenred. The singing of males was classified into two major types, stereotyped song and squeaky song. The stereotyped songs of eight territorial males were recorded Intraindividual and individually distinctive features were studied. Individuals produced their song in distinctive ways in terms of song duration and the number of syllables. Gray-headed Buntings sang various syllable types. We found that a male produced more constant syllables in anterior group than those in posterior group. Males sang distinctive syllables among them. Some syllable types which were frequently appeared in an anterior group. In these analyses, we suggest that the anterior groups in songs of a Gray-headed Bunting express the constant information and the posterior groups contribute to situational communication.

  • This study was conducted to investigate bird community and to suggest a proper way how to manage and protect bird community in Tokyusan National Park. The survey was carried over 2 main trail districts by line transect method at 20, February and 22, July in 1993. The observed birds were belong to 5 orders 17 families 34 species, they also have Sparrow Hawk Accipiter nisus, Kestrel Falco tinunnculus(natural monument no. 323), White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos(R) and Japanese Waxwing Bombycilla japonica(R). It is estimated that grass region above 1,000m altitude provided breeding habitats for Gray-headed Bunting Emberiza fucata in summer and wintering habitats for Rosy Finch Leucosticte arctoa in winter, This shows that this region should be protected for inhabitation of these birds. Mujukucheontong valley of Tokyusan National Park, which had been a good habitat for valley-inhabituating birds before twenty years ago, has a lower species richness by increasing using density, and so this valley shoud be properly managed urgently.
