  • This paper proposes a new strategy for assisting SMEs in S. Korea to grow by the use of free technologies, which include expired patents, patents that are effective in other countries but not in S. Korea, and technologies that were published without being patented. A key question answered in this paper is how to find valuable technologies developed by large companies that can be utilized by domestic SMEs. A procedure for identifying emerging free technologies was developed and is explained with an example. A quantitative analysis of technology trend was conducted on PCT's published patents that did not include S. Korea as a designated country, and then emerging IPC subclasses were identified. Among those emerging technology areas, the subclass areas where the number of Korean inventors is small were identified as key emerging free technology areas. Our method for identifying emerging free technologies can assist domestic SMEs to advance in the international market and guide the development of a national industrial strategy.

  • A numerical solution is provided for a jet produced by a flow emerging from a slit at the bottom corner of a quarter plane. The flow is characterized by the Froude number F, based on the net volume flux and the width of the slit. We perform the free-surface flow for various values of F and another parameter corresponding to the position of the vertical wall. A jet with back-flow near the edge of the vertical wall is obtained, and the limiting case is a jet with a stagnation point.

  • The world is facing an unprecedented economic, social and political crisis with the spread of COVID-19. The Corona Virus (COVID-19) and its global spread have resulted in declaring a pandemic by the World Health Organization. The deadly pandemic of 21st century has spread its wings across the globe with an exponential increase in the number of cases in many countries. The developing and underdeveloped countries are struggling hard to counter the rapidly growing and widespread challenge of COVID-19 because it has greatly influenced the global economies whereby the underdeveloped countries are more affected by its devastating impacts, especially the life of the low-income population. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) were particularly useful in spreading key emergency information and helping to maintain extensive social distancing. Updated information and testing results were published on national and local government websites. Mobile devices were used to support early testing and contact tracing. The government provided free smartphone apps that flagged infection hotspots with text alerts on testing and local cases. The purpose of this research work is to provide an in depth overview of emerging technologies and recent ICT developments to combat COVID-19 Pandemic. Finally, the author highlights open challenges in order to give future research directions.

  • A fundamental trend of processor architecture evolving towards exaflops is fast increasing floating point performance (so-called "free" flops) accompanied by much slowly increasing memory and network bandwidth. In order to fully enjoy the "free" flops, a numerical algorithm of PDEs should request more flops per byte or increase arithmetic intensity. A meshfree/GFEM approximation can be the class of the algorithm. It is shown in a GFEM without extra dof that the kind of approximation takes advantages of the high performance of manycore GPUs by a high accuracy of approximation; the "expensive" method is found to be reversely hardware-efficient on the emerging architecture of manycore.

  • This study focused on Spillover of Technology Trade against Post- BRICs of the Technology export of Korea. Therefore this study made an empirical analysis for investigating the competitiveness of technology export in Korea and using panel data 2003-2012 of technology trade data between 6 Countries(Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Turkey, Vietnam). In particular, the study deduced the correlation between technology export in Korea using the variables of Gross Domestic Expenditure on R&D and Per capita GDP, distance, population, free-trade index, FDI, Technology-Intensive Manufactures, Pattern Investment fixed effect model in panel linear regression model. It is found that the Technology export of Korea SMEs made a significant effect on the pop, free_trade, and distance. and also it is found that the Technology export of Korea Big Business made a significant effect on the per-GDP, Fdi from Korea, free_trade, and distance. The results suggest that the study should use technology gap variables and the strategy for activating the Technology export of Korea should be made for future works.

  • Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is an emerging technology enabling cost effective and high throughput nanofabrication. To successfully imprint a nanometer scale patterns, the understanding of the mechanism in nanoimprint forming is essential. In this paper, a numerical analysis of polymer flow in thermal NIL was performed. First, a finite element model of the periodic mold structure with prescribed boundary conditions was established. Then, the volume of fluid (VOF) and grid deformation method were utilized to calculate the free surfaces of the polymer flow based on an Eulerian grid system. From the simulation, the velocity fields and the imprinting pressure for constant imprinting velocity in thermal NIL were obtained. The velocity field is significant because it can directly describe the mode of the polymer deformation, which is the key role to determine the mechanism of nanoimprint forming. Effects of different mold shapes and various thicknesses of polymer resist were also investigated.

  • DNA metabarcoding is currently used for large-scale taxonomic identification to understand the community composition in various marine ecosystems. However, before being widely used in this emerging field, this experimental and analytic approach still has several technical challenges to overcome, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) bias, and lack of well-established metabarcoding markers, a task which is difficult but not impossible to achieve. In this study, we present an adapted PCR-free small-organelles enriched metagenomics (SoEM) method for marine biodiversity assessment. To avoid PCR bias and random artefacts, we extracted target DNA sequences without PCR amplification from marine environmental samples enriched with small organelles including mitochondria and plastids because their genome sequences provide a valuable source of molecular markers for phylogenetic analysis. To experimentally enrich small organelles, we performed subcellular fractionation using modified differential centrifugation for marine environmental DNA samples. To validate our SoEM method, two marine environmental samples from the coastal waters were tested the taxonomic capturing capacity against that of traditional DNA metabarcoding method. Results showed that, regardless of taxonomic levels, at least 3-fold greater numbers of taxa were identified in our SoEM method, compared to those identified by the conventional multi-locus DNA metabarcoding method. The SoEM method is thus effective and accurate for identifying taxonomic diversity and presents a useful alternative approach for evaluating biodiversity in the marine environment.

  • Ultra-precision positioning plays a crucial role in emerging technologies such as electronics, bioengineering, optics, and various nanofabrication technologies. As a result, various nanopositioning methods have been presented. In particular, nanopositioning using a flexure mechanism and piezo-electric actuator is one of the most valuable methods because of its friction-free motion and subnanometer-scale motion resolution. In this study, a rotational nanoactuator based on a right-circular flexure mechanism and piezo-electric actuator was developed through a consideration of the kinematics and structural deformation. An experimental setup was constructed to verify the performance expectation. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the developed system had a maximum rotational angle of about 0.01 rad, as well as sufficient linearity with respect to the input voltage.

  • Facebook has quickly infused across cultures worldwide to become a common household term for diverse spectra of netizens, especially youngsters. Inherently, interactive in nature, Facebook provides a common cyber enabled platform for online interactions with social friends, living across the world. However, despite its merits, users also experience certain disadvantages, which include but are not limited to rise in feelings of social comparison, decline in self-esteem, contentment and general subjective well-being. This work aims to determine the role of Facebook in spreading envy and identify factors that trigger such emotions. Due to abductive nature of the study, we used pilot interviews and consulted relevant literature to formulate hypotheses. Further, we used deductive approach and conducted a survey. The results showed that frequent use of Facebook, particularly passive following is main predictor of envy, and social interaction is the biggest cause for development of envious feelings in Facebook users. However, insignificant variation was found while investigating relationship between envy and factors, such as pretentiousness, time spent, accomplishment, everything in life, likes on posts, popularity across genders, marital status and genre.
