Experimental Study on the Pressure Characteristics of Pneumatic Brake for Freight Train (화물열차의 공기제동 압력 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Experimental study is conducted to clarify the pneumatic characteristics of brake system for freight train. Empty-load and diaphragm brake systems are mainly installed in the freight trains owned by KNR(Korean National Railroad). Experimental train set is composed of sixteen freight train and one diesel locomotive that are now in use. From the experimental results, in case of commercial brake, empty-load brake system responds to the brake command more slowly than the diaphragm brake system. But, in case of release command, the response time of diaphragm brake system is shorter than that of empty-load one. In the emergency brake test, the decreasing rate of brake pipe pressure of tenth car is almost same that of decreasing rate of commercial brake service.

A Study on the Improvement of Release Application Characteristics of Pneumatic Brakes for Freight Train

  • We have performed experimental studies for the improvements of pneumatic brake systems of freight trains. Currently, most of the freight trains operated by the Korean National Railroad have either empty-load or diaphragm type brake systems. In this study, appropriate methods that the air pressure characteristics in both type of brake systems are in accordance with each other have been investigated. We have also performed running tests using a 30 car-train set to design optimum capacity of a quick release valve. The test results show that the quick release valve is considerably effective in shortening the release time of the diaphragm type brake system. In the case of a normal brake application, the diaphragm type brake system with the quick release valve reduces the release time to 34% of that of the system without the quick release valve. This release time is almost equivalent to that of the empty-load type brake system. Accordance of braking performance in different types of brake systems in a train set is expected to prevent wheel flats and to reduce maintenance costs.

  • Experimental study has been conducted to clarify the pneumatic characteristics of brake system for freight train and enhance the performance of diaphragm valve. Empty-load and diaphragm valves are installed in pneumatic brake system for freight trains of KNR (Korean National Railroad). Experiments are conducted by using freight train and diesel locomotive in operation. From the experimental results. new quick release valve shortens release time after brake application. In case of normal brake application, the release time is shortened to 34% of the original diaphragm valve. Reducing the release time of pneumatic brake system will be helpful to assure brake-release application and save maintenance efforts like wheel grinding.

Load history measurement of end beam of welded structure bogie for railway freight car (화차용 용접구조대차 엔드빔의 하중이력 측정)

  • Among welded structure bogies in use for high speed freight car, a part of bogies manufactured in 1999 and 2000 have found problems that failure occurs in its end beam. In case of a freight car a difference of weight between empty and loading conditions are worse than in case of a passenger car. Moreover its brake system is tread brake without second suspension system. A failure of end beam is supposed to be due to loading by brake rather than vertical loading by freight. This failure can make brake system useless and may be a cause of derailment in the worst case. In this study, in order to be proved the cause of failure and to solve the problem it is described that we have measured load history acted on end beam and set up the procedures.

In this study, we have proposed a simple torsion-free brake shoe holder hanger to remove torsion of hanger bracket which was supposed to be one of causes of cracks and performed finite element analyses. Also static load test was applied in torsion free brake shoe holder.
