  • This research was conducted to investigate the effect of essential oil (EO) from Artemisia Princeps Pampanini on quality of tomato during storage. EO was extracted by steam distillation and diluted by 1 and 2%. Total phenolic contents and antioxidative activities of EO were analyzed. Tomato was packaged corrugated box covered with polypropylene (PP) film containing EO (1 and 2%) and then stored at room temperature for 10 days. During storage, appearance, weight loss rate, soluble solid contents, pH and a (redness) value were measured for tomato. Total phenolic contents of EO increased in a dose-dependence. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities also showed a concentration-dependent increase. The weight loss rate was lowest using the film packaged in 1% EO. During the storage period, soluble solid contents and pH increased in all treatments. The a value increased regardless of EO concentration in films. Especially, tomato packaged with EO film showed a lower a value than non EO-packaged ones. This result suggests that application of EO to film is effective for tomato quality preservation.

  • Cure characteristics of non-oil-extended solution SBR (S-SBR_NO) and oil-extended solution SBR (S-SBR_ EO) compounds reinforced with silica/carbon black were investigated. Minimum and maximum torques of S-SBR_ EO compounds were much smaller than those of S-SBR_NO ones. Delta torques of S-SBR_NO compounds were greater than those of S-SBR_EO ones, and that of S-SBR_NO compound increased with increase in the 1,2-unit content. Optimum cure time ($t_{90}$) of S-SBR compound decreased with increase in the 1,4-unit content, whereas it increased with increase in the 1,2-unit content. Cure rate index of S-SBR compound increased with increase in the 1,4-unit content, whereas it decreased with increase in the 1,2-unit content. Comparing cure characteristics of S-SBR_NO and S-SBR_EO compounds with the same 1,2-unit content, $t_{90}$s of S-SBR_EO compounds were longer than those of S-SBR_NO ones and cure rate indices of S-SBR_EO compounds were smaller than those of S-SBR_NO ones.

  • The S100 family proteins act as inducers of cancer cell apoptosis and inflammatory mediators. This study examined the pro-apoptotic mechanism caused by S100A8 and S100A9 in human FIP1L1-PDGFRα-positive eosinophilic leukemia cells. S100A8 and S100A9 elicited the death of EoL-1 cells in a time and dose-dependent manner. The activation of PDGFRα was suppressed by a decrease in PDGFRα after treatment with S100A8 and S100A9. Cycloheximide, a translation inhibitor, suppressed PDGFRα expression from 1 h to 5 h, and a co-treatment with S100A8 and S100A9 boosted the decrease in expression. The phosphorylation and expression of STAT5 decreased after treatment with S100A8 and S100A9 in EoL-1 and imatinib-resistant (EoL-1-IR) cells. S100A8 and S100A9 induced the chemotaxis of EoL-1 cells but did not affect the chemoattraction of EoL-1-IR. These findings indicate the cell death mechanism due to S100 family proteins and the development of leukemia therapy using S100A8 and S100A9.

  • The aim of this study is to elucidate the anti-inflammatory activities of chopi (Zanthoxylum piperitum A.P. DC.) essential oil. Essential oil (EO) of chopi was extracted by steam distillation method, and its major constituents were limonene and geranyl acetate. Chopi-EO decreased approximately 38% of nitrite production, as compared to the lipopolysaccharde (LPS)-induced nitrite production. However, chopi-EO and its components did not quench nitric oxide (NO) chemically in cellfree system, and markedly inhibited approximately 40.4% of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA transcription. In addition, the inhibition of E-selectin gene transcription by chopi-EO caused the suppression of cellular adhesion. These results suggest that chopi-EO may exert potential anti-immunological inflammatory activity.

  • Purpose: The prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) has been on the rise since it was first described in the 1990s. Several diseases and exogenous factors have been associated with EoE. Our aim was to investigate the epidemiology of EoE in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Methods: We identified individuals with CF from September 2014 to September 2019 within a database (IBM Explorys Solutions, Inc.). The prevalence of EoE in patients with CF was compared to the general population. Results: The database included 36,111,860 patients during the 5-year study period: 12,950 with CF (0.036%) and 28,090 with EoE (0.078%). EoE prevalence was higher in CF patients than the general population (46 in 10,000 vs. 7.8 in 10,000, p<0.001). Patients with CF and EoE were more likely to be male (50% vs. 33.5%, p<0.008), children (33.3% vs. 16.5%, p<0.001), and non-Hispanic (100% vs. 88.7%, p<0.001) than CF patients without EoE. CF with EoE patients were more likely to be children than EoE only (33.3% vs. 10.5%, p<0.001). Allergic conditions were generally more prevalent in CF with EoE than CF only (83.3% vs. 68.3%, p=0.01) and EoE only (83.3% vs. 69.3%, p=0.014). Conclusion: EoE is nearly 6-times more prevalent in CF patients. Those patients had higher incidence of other atopic conditions. EoE must be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with CF presenting with dysphagia, refractory gastroesophageal reflux, vomiting, and other esophagus-related symptoms.

  • For modeling an equation of state suitable for describing associating fluids, we combined the cubic equation of state (Peng-Robinson) and an association term of SAFT. The resulting EoS (Cubic-Plus-Association) is not cubic with respect to volume and contains five pure compound parameters. Excellent correlations of both vapour pressures and saturated liquid volumes were obtained for n-alcohols and secondary alcohols. We considered a method for reducing the number of adjustable pure compound parameters from five to three, and the resulting 3-parameters EoS relation maintained the good correlation of vapour pressures and saturated liquid volumes.

  • The linear electro-optic (EO) effect is one of the second-order nonlinear optical effects existing in a noncentrosymmetric macroscopic system. In a polymer thin film, the noncentrosymmetry is achieved by electric field poling. The magnitude of the linear EO response is determined through the orientational distribution function of hyperpolarizable molecular dipoles. The relation between the linear EO coefficient and the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility is explained. Three different methods of measuring the linear EO coefficient of a poled nonliner optical polymer thin film are introduced and discussed. All of them make use of the interferometric technique, the difference being in the optical parameters which are interfering.

  • The nature of the nematic liquid crystal (LC) alignment induced by the rubbed polyimide (PI) alignment layers (ALs) and the electro-optical (EO) properties of the LC cells are expected to depend on the chemical and physical features of the PI. By employing five pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)-type PIs having different functionalities, we have studied the effects of the PI's structure and chemistry on the alignment characteristics and the cell's EO properties. Increasing the flexibility of the PI increases the pretilt angle and tends to improve the alignment stability. On the other hand, the rigid, fluorinated PI displays poor stability for LCs and induces a less stable/uniform LC alignment and, subsequently, a small pre tilt angle. It also transpired that fluorination of the PI deteriorated the voltage-transmittance characteristics and the voltage holding ratio; increasing the flexibility of the PI structure improves these EO properties. The finding that the qualitative trends for the PI's functionalities are similar for both the alignment and EO properties suggests that the EO properties are closely related to the alignment characteristics, which are determined by short-range interactions between LC and PI molecules.

  • To produce the raw material used for printing and writing paper or high quality tissue, MOWs that were consisted of white ledger, colored ledger and old newspaper were bleached with EoP and EoPY(FAS) method, the EoP bleaching process gave the improvement in brightness and a high color removal efficiency. Especially, MOW B(initial brightness: 59.1% ISO) that contained much old newspaper showed the higher bleaching efficiency than those of MOW A(initial brightness: 68.3%). After EoPY(FAS) bleaching, MOW's brightness was increased from 68.3% ISO to 84.3∼84.0% ISO, and from 59.1% ISO to 78.7∼79.2% ISO, respectively. Also the tensile and burst index of bleached pulps decreased by 10∼30%. The tear index slightly decreased or halted at the same range as unbleached pulps.

  • Development-concerned parties, business managers and test evaluators have experienced conflicts among themselves due to the absence of standardized criteria for military electro-optical(EO) and infrared(IR) devices in test evaluation planning and evaluation phases. Therefore, establishment of objectified test and evaluation criteria for EO/IR devices is required. This paper applies South Korea's weather measurement average of minimum 15 km for visibility range, 3 bar from Johnson criteria for EO device and 4 bar from NATO's STANAG-4347 for IR device for target type, and 50 % probability for evaluation criteria, respectively. Based upon these criteria, this paper will establish suitable criteria that are improved for development weapon system in consideration of required capability of demanding forces and field environment.
