  • In the case of a motor system that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, the region of the motor and that of the generator coexists. In the case of an escalator, the ascending escalator is operated by the motor, whereas the descending escalator is operated by the generator according to the load. To evaluate the proposed method, this study reduces the power of the ascending escalator up to approximately 35% by sharing the regeneration power of the descending escalator. The loss of transfer power nearly exists in the case of the proposed method. Furthermore, the lifetime of the DC link condenser can be extended because it is connected in parallel, thus leading to a twofold increase in capacity.

  • When an escalator is developed or modified for improved performance, estimation of dynamic characteristics of the escalator is required. But modeling of the escalator for a design purpose is very difficult and time consuming process. Especially, it is very difficult for the designer to use the simulation model during design process because it takes time and also the designer needs to know how to use the simulation program. In order to solve these problems, a graphic user interface program that can predict dynamic characteristics of an escalator is developed for the designer. Since this program has the necessary complicated escalator model inside, the designer does not have to know how to use the simulation program and design parameters can be obtained while design is in progress. The developed designer oriented interface program is explained and an example is shown.

But modeling of the escalator for a design purpose is very difficult and time consuming. Especially, it is very difficult for a designer to use the simulation model during design process because preparing a proper model takes time and also the designer needs to know how to use the simulation program. In order to solver these problems, a graphic user interface program that can predict dynamic characteristics of an escalator is developed for the designer. Since this program makes the necessary escalator model for simulation for itself, the designer does not need to know how to use the simulation program while design is in progress. In this paper, a designer oriented interface program is developed and an example is presented to show the effectiveness of the developed program.

  • As a method of separating the signal arriving from a desired direction in the presence of noise and interfering signals, a linearly constrained adaptive beamformer based on the escalator (Gram-Schmidt) structure is presented. The weights are chosen to minimize local output power subject to the response constraint. The performances of the proposed escalator adaptive beamformer are compared with those of cascade adaptive beamformer via computer simulations.

  • This paper deals with an analysis and reduction of escalator vibration by using the response surface model. Optimization of the escalator vibration is performed by minimization of the vibration responses which are measured at steps. The response surface models of the factors are constructed by using the experimental data based on the D optimal design method. The multi-objective optimization is also performed by applying desirability function and overlaid contour plot techniques. The optimal solution, which is obtained for a typical escalator system, is applied to reduce the escalator vibration.

  • The elevator is an essential part of the transportation means in modern society. It has become the convenient movement means of vertical and horizontal mobilities for vulnerable citizens including the disabled or elderly in skyscrapers and the multi-purposes facilities. After the 1990s, the number of newly installed elevators have increased because of the establishment of large scale public houses which need an increase of means of transportation. Thus, the safety accident in the elevator has been currently in an increasing trend as years passed by because that the elevator is always exposed to the risk of accident. Most of the elevator accidents occur in the escalator and moving walkway. This study investigated the current usage situations of users at multi-purpose shopping spaces, the sub way, and the airport about the escalator including moving walkway. Moreover the accident types were analyzed for the escalator based on 10 years of statistics. And the methods for the accident prevention were proposed on the equipment, management and user side.

  • A normalization approach to coefficient adaptation in the escalator(ESC) filter structure that conventionally employs least mean square(LMS) algorithm is introduced. Using Taylor's expansion of the local error signal, a normalized form of the ESC-LMS algorithm is derived. Compared with the computational complexity of the conventional ESC-LMS algorithm employs input power estimation for time-varying convergence coefficient using a single-pole low-pass filter, the computational complexity of the proposed method can be reduced by 50% without performance degradation.

  • In this paper, we introduce an escalator (ESC) algorithm based on the least squares (LS) criterion. The proposed algorithm is relatively insensitive to the eigenvalue spread ratio (ESR) of an input signal and has a faster convergence speed than the conventional ESC algorithms. This algorithm exploits the fast adaptation ability of least squares methods and the orthogonalization property of the ESC structure. From the simulation results, the proposed algorithm shows superior convergence performance.

  • In this paper we introduce a new escalator(ESC) structure-based adaptation algorithm. The proposed algorithm is independent of eigenvalues spread ratio(ESR) of channel and has faster convergence speed than that of the conventional ESC algorithms. This algorithm combines the fast adaptation ability of least square methods and the orthogonalization property of the ESC structure. From the simulation results the proposed algorithm shows superior convergence speed and no slowing down of convergence speed when we increase the ESR of the channel.
