Development of Web-based Diagnosis Expert System of Traditional Oriental Medicine (인터넷 기반 한의진단전문가 시스템(KHU-PIPE) 개발)

  • In Traditional Oriental Medicine, there has been a growing needs for computerized diagnosis expert system, which can implement pre-diagnosis and correct the errors of practitioners. Therefore, we developed the expert system (KHU-PIPE : Kyung Hee University - Pattern Identification and Prescription Expert) for diagnosis and treatment. It has three characteristics as following. First. this system has the knowledge base which modified the standardized data designed by Chinese government during 1980s. Second, it provides the objective and standardized diagnosis as the results of pattern identification and their appropriate prescriptions for treatment. Third, it is applied to both LAN system and internet. Furthermore, it can be used as an educational methods for the practices of pattern identification and prescription, and provide the objective criteria for clinical studies and promote the Traditional Oriental Medicine as an evidence-based medicine.

Identifying Topic-Specific Experts on Microblog

  • With the rapid growth of microblog, expert identification on microblog has been playing a crucial role in many applications. While most previous expert identification studies only assess global authoritativeness of a user, there is no way to differentiate the authoritativeness in a particular aspect of topics. In this paper, we propose a novel model, which jointly models text and following relationship in the same generative process. Furthermore, we integrate a similarity-based weight scheme into the model to address the popular bias problem, and use followee topic distribution as prior information to make user's topic distribution more precisely. Our empirical study on two large real-world datasets shows that our proposed model produces significantly higher quality results than the prior arts.

  • Managers are constantly facing problems. Some problems are treated with special connotation. Others are solved as a daily routine. While other problems disppear into the realm of oblivion without even recognized by managers. Some of the unrecognized or overlooked problems may cause a serious failure. It is also likely that there is a better solution approach even though we have been using a generally accepted method. Problem identification is a neglected area by researchers and managers, although they are facing problems everday. This paper provides a review of the theories pertained to problem definition and problem identification as the beginning stage of the problem solving process. Based on these theories, we provide an expert system which can assist managers for a better problem solving. Knowledge base for problem identification and recommaendation of tools for the problem solving is the key ingredient of the expert system.

  • Expert system is an effective approach for quality system to be automated and thus to be an essential integrating mechanism in any move towards CIM(Computer Integrated Manufacturing). A quality control expert system is introduced and its relationship to CIM is illustrated in a case study. Process control expert system developed by Kim and Sin[6] has been improved via ODBC(Open DataBase Connectivity) for efficient information network, graph representation using Windows API for rapid response and some new rules for identification of patterns in control charts.

Development of a Standard Tool for Pattern Identification of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) (위식도역류질환 변증도구 개발 연구)

  • Objectives: This study was designed to develop a standard tool for pattern identification of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients. Methods: Korean and Chinese literature was selected that mentioned pattern identification of GERD. We gathered the pattern identification and their symptoms and a Chinese medical doctor proficient in Korean translated the Chinese characters into Korean. A Korean linguist then confirmed the translation results to develop a draft of the standard tool for pattern identification of gastroesophageal reflux disease (PIGERD). The final PIGERD was developed after assessment by an expert committee composed of professors from the Korean Medicine University, using the following items: inclusion of the pattern identification and its symptoms, importance of items, and validity of translation. Results: Six pattern identifications and 94 symptoms were selected from 45 references and translated into Korean. Four pattern identifications [pattern/syndrome of liver qi invading the stomach (肝胃不和), spleen-stomach weakness (脾胃虛弱), spleen-stomach dampness-heat (脾胃濕熱), and stomach yin deficiency (胃陰不足)] and 49 symptoms were then selected through the Delphi method by the expert committee. The final standard PIGERD tool was completed after the assessment of translation validity and reflection of individual opinions by the expert committee. This tool consists of 40 items including tongue and pulse diagnosis. The weighted value was also computed from assessment of the importance of items. Conclusions: We developed a standard tool for pattern identification of gastroesophageal reflux disease (PIGERD) to clarify the pattern identification of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease for standardized diagnosis.

  • Computerized interpretation of vapor phase infrared spectra using a novel expert system approach for spectra/structure correlation for vapor phase spectra is introduced. Rapid identification of aromatic functional groups of components in gaseous mixture can be achieved using this expert system.

  • This paper deals with the development of an expert system for the fault diagnosis in a power system. The expert system is designed to estimate the fault sections with explanation about the propagation of the faults through the identification of false operation of protective devices. The identification of black-out area is also considered to assist the restoration process. As for the inference scheme, backward chaining method is adopted and the search space is reduced for the better performance. The expert system was developed using PROLOG language. Its application to a sample power system showed satisfactory result.

Evaluation of Validity of Deficiency and Excess Pattern Identification Questionnaire (검진용 허실 변증 진단 설문지 타당도 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of Deficiency and Excess Pattern Identification Questionnaire. The number of subjects enrolled in this study was 431. Pearson Correlation Coefficient analysis were conducted to reveal the correlation among Deficiency and Excess Pattern Identification Questionnaire, Grip Strength and Quality of life. ROC-curve analysis were used to suggest optimal cut off value. Cohen Kappa also used to analyze for diagnostic validity. The significant p-value was < .05. The Deficiency questionnaire had positive correlation with the score of the expert and negative correlation with Grip Strength and Quality of life (p<.001). The Excess questionnaire had positive correlation with the score of the expert and negative correlation with Quality of life (p<.001). The optimal cut off value was 56.5 to separate deficiency and non deficiency and 47.5 to separate excess and non-excess. Furthermore, AUC was .900 and .851 accordingly. Cohen Kappa value between deficiency questionnaire and the expert was .640. Cohen Kappa value between excess questionnaire and the expert was .513. This study reveals that Deficiency and Excess Pattern Identification Questionnaire is valid. However, further study considering of gender, age, and health condition and so on, is needed.

  • A refined version of automatic micro-organism recognition and identification method, 'O.I.S.M.2' is proposed in this paper, using image processing based on an expert system. This proposed method is based on the segmentation of the organism image, characterizing segment features, which are independent of individual size and length. Complicated shapes of organisms are divided into basic shape segments defined in this paper such as lines, circles, ovals etc. Organisms can then be expressed simply in a set of segments, regardless their individual differences.

  • Hazard identification is one of the most important task in process design and operation. This work has focused on the development of a knowledge-based expert system for HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies which are regarded as one of the most systematic and logical qualitative hazard identification methodologies but which require a multidisciplinary team and demand much time-consuming, repetitious work. The developed system enables design engineers to implement existing checklists and past experiences for safe design. It will increase efficiency of hazard identification and be suitable for educational purposes. This system has a frame-based knowledge structure for equipment failures/process material properties and rule networks for consequence reasoning which uses both forward and backward chaining. To include wide process knowledge, it is open-ended and modular for future expansion. An application to LPG storage and fractionation system shows the efficiency and reliability of the developed system.
