The iris recognition is a biometrics technology to extract and code an unique iris feature from human eye image. Also, it includes the technology to compare with other's various iris stored in the system. On the other hand, eyelashes in iris image are a external factor to affect to recognition rate of iris. If eyelashes are not removed exactly from iris area, there are two false recognitions that recognize eyelashes to iris features or iris features to eyelashes. Eventually, these false recognitions bring out a lot of loss in iris informations. In this paper, in order to solve that problems, we removed eyelashes by gabor filter that using for analysis of frequency feature and improve preservation rate of iris informations. By novel method to extract various features on iris area using angle, frequency, and gaussian parameter on gabor filter that is one of the filters for analysing frequency feature for an image, we could remove accurately eyelashes with various lengths and shapes. As the result, proposed method represents that improve about 4% than previous methods using GMM or histogram analysis in iris preservation rate.

The purpose of this study was to verify the efficacy of cosmetics containing peptides as a cosmetic method for eyelashes. The study subjects were 21 women aged 20 years, set as the experimental group (right eyelash) and the control group (left eyelash), and measured changes according to the use of peptide cosmetics for 4 weeks. As a result of the analysis, the change in the length and density of eyelashes showed significant differences in the interaction between the group and the experiment period, and in the main effect according to each experiment period (p<.001). In the change of eyelash density and thickness, it was found that there was a significant difference at week 3 and week 4 in the difference between groups by measurement period (p>.05, p>.01). Cosmetics containing peptides have been effectively proven to be an effective cosmetic method for safe and beautiful eyelashes by increasing the length and number of eyelashes to those who suffer from side effects caused by cosmetic procedures. In the future, we look forward to expanding research to a wide range of age groups.

In this study, the flat-section monofilaments of PBT for artificial eyelashes was developed, and the physical properties of the circular cross-section of artificial eyelashes were compared and observed, and the main performance of the artificial eyelash prototype was observed through processing for artificial eyelashes. In addition, a satisfaction survey of the prototype was conducted through a survey of consumers and artificial eyelash operators. It was found that the bending stiffness value of the monofilaments increased significantly as the thickness increased. As a result of measuring the bending properties of the flat-section PBT monofilaments, the bending stiffness was significantly lower than that of the circular-section PBT specimens of the same thickness. The deformed cross-section PBT monofilaments with flat cross sections developed in this study showed a light weight factor of less than 50% compared to the existing circular cross-section PBT ones. The adhesive strength of the developed PBT artificial specimens was greater than that of the existing circular cross-section yarn. It was also observed that the curl stability over time was excellent. As a result of the consumer survey, it was possible to obtain more than 85% of positive answers in the case of consumer subjects, and it was possible to investigate that the satisfaction of the operator subjects was more than 80% compared to the existing round-section eyelashes.

This study were to investigate the scratches and replacement cycles of eyeglasses according to personal characteristics in daily life. The subjects were 58 people who voluntarily participated in this study. The replacement cycle of eyeglasses according to the contact of eyelashes with eyeglasses, type and the number of eyeglasses wiped on a day were analyzed. The statistical analysis were performed by X² test and Fisher's exact test. The average replacement cycle of the eyeglasses were longer females than males. The eyeglasses replacement cycle were significantly shorter when the eyelashes contacted the eyeglasses and when the eyeglasses were wiped using a tissue or clothes other than the eyeglasses towel. The coating film of the eyeglasses may be damaged by the convergence effect such as eyelashes or minor carelessness in daily life, and this study will continue to follow up on this result.

Epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been widely used for non-small-cell lung cancer patients. Its untoward cutaneous effects are largely well known and developed in many patients treated with EGFR TKIs. However trichomegaly of eyelash is rarely reported. Although trichomegaly is not a drug-limiting side effect, it could be troublesome of continuing the treatment because of cosmetic issue or eyeball irritation by long eyelashes. Therefore clinicians are needed to pay attention to this uncommon effect. We herein describe erlotinib induced trichomegaly of eyelashes in a woman with adenocarcinoma of the lung.

Phthirus pubis usually infests the pubis, groin, buttocks and perianal region. It can sometimes infest the thighs, abdomen, chest, axillae and beard. Eyelashes and eyebrows may be involved in children. The involvement of the scalp is very rare. We describe a case of P. pubis infestation located exclusively on the scalp in an adult woman. Neither lice/nits nor skin lesions were observed elsewhere, including eyebrows, eyelashes, axillae, pubis, buttocks and perianal region (the patient was hairless in the axillae and pubis). A review of the literature is enclosed.

Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a rare multisystemic disorder that is characterized by mental retardation, prenatal and postnatal growth retardation, limb anomalies, and distinctive facial features, which include arched eyebrows that often meet in the middle (synophrys), long eyelashes, low-set ears, small and widely spaced teeth, and a small and upturned nose. Ophthalmic manifestations include long eyelashes, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, myopia, ptosis, and strabismus. There has been no report of surgical treatment for esotropia and unilateral ptosis in patients with CdLS in Korea. I report a patient with CdLS who underwent surgical treatment for esotropia and unilateral ptosis with a good surgical outcome.

Cyclopia is a congenital ocular abnormality in which two orbits are fused together due to an arrest in the normal process of embryonic tissue development. Reported here is a case of cyclopia in a calf observed from the uterus of cow slaughtered in an abattoir in Korea on March 24, 2004. The calf possessed a spherical-shaped head and only one centrally placed eye. The one eyeball showed complete eyelashes on the defective eyelids. The nasal region and the anterior nares were absent along with a dorsally curved mandible extended beyond the defective maxillae.

Inflammatory eyelid symptoms are common in primary care and there have been several reports on Demodex blepharitis. In the present study, we evaluate the 9 patients with Demodex blepharitis, who showed inflammation of the eyelids, dry eye, and cylindrical dandruff at the base of the eyelashes. The causative species from all patients was Demodex folliculorum of either the adult or nymph stage. Two patients had recurrent chalazion and 3 patients had keratitis. Weekly lid scrubs with 50% tee tree oil were performed for 6 weeks. After treatment, the symptoms of blepharitis and keratitis had improved in all patients. This case report provides clinical reference source for the proper treatment of ocular demodicosis.

Distichiasis is one of the diseases commonly encountered in companion animals, and these abnormal eyelashes cause corneal ulcers, continuous eye irritation, eye pain, glare, epiphora, foreign body sensation and can cause corneal opacity and vision loss in severe cases. In this study, an eyelash epilation needle for animals was developed and applied to a real case, and the results were observed. In a case of corneal ulcer caused by distichiasis of a 2-year-old Shih Tzu, a high-frequency surgical instrument for animals was converted into an electric epilation needle to attempt a procedure to destroy the eyelash hair follicles on the upper eyelid. A epilation needle was developed to have a diameter of 0.1 mm and a length of 4 mm at the end of the handle of DOCTANZ 400, an electrosurgical instrument for animals only. In the procedure, 2~3 mm of an epilation needle was inserted into the hair follicle, and 1 watt of electric power was applied to the hair follicle for about 5 sec. to carry out electrolysis until white bubbles were generated around the meibomian glands thereby destroying the hair follicle. As a result, no eyelashes grew any longer in the treated area indicating that the treatment was successful. It is hoped that the method developed in this study will be applied so that it will be widely used as a treatment method for distichiasis in companion animals that can be frequently seen hereafter.
