  • Steel plate or FRP materials have been typically used for the seismic retrofit of civil infrastructures. In order to overcome the limitation of each retrofitting material, a composite material, which takes advantages from both metal and fiber polymer materials, has been developed. In the study herein, the composite retrofitting material consists of metal part(steel or aluminum) and FRP sheet part(glass or carbon fiber). The metal part can enhance the ductility and the FRP part the ultimate strength. As a preliminary study to investigate the fundamental mechanical characteristics of the metal-FRP laminated composite material this study performed the tensile test with various experimental variables including the number, the angle and the combination of FRP laminates. From the test results, both aluminum and steel-FRP laminate composite material showed increased fracture toughness. However, the angle and the kind of fibers should be carefully considered in conjunction with the expected loading conditions. In general, steel-FRP laminate composite showed better tensile performance in regards to the seismic retrofit purposes.

From the aluminum-FRP composite tests no great increase in flexural strength and flexural toughness were observed. However, flexural toughness of steel-FRP laminate composite was increased so that its behavior can be considered in the retrofit design. In addition, the angle and the kind of fibers should be carefully considered in conjunction with the expected loading conditions.

  • Since composite structures are widely used in structural engineering, delamination in such structures is an important issue of research. Delamination is one of a principal cause of failure in composites. In This study the electrical potential (EP) technique is applied to detect and locate delamination in basalt fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminate composite pipe by using electrical capacitance sensor (ECS). The proposed EP method is able to identify and localize hidden delamination inside composite layers without overlapping with other method data accumulated to achieve an overall identification of the delamination location/size in a composite, with high accuracy, easy and low-cost. Twelve electrodes are mounted on the outer surface of the pipe. Afterwards, the delamination is introduced into between the three layers (0º/90º/0º)s laminates pipe, split into twelve scenarios. The dielectric properties change in basalt FRP pipe is measured before and after delamination occurred using arrays of electrical contacts and the variation in capacitance values, capacitance change and node potential distribution are analyzed. Using these changes in electrical potential due to delamination, a finite element simulation model for delamination location/size detection is generated by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic. Response surfaces method (RSM) are adopted as a tool for solving inverse problems to estimate delamination location/size from the measured electrical potential changes of all segments between electrodes. The results show good convergence between the finite element model (FEM) and estimated results. Also the results indicate that the proposed method successfully assesses the delamination location/size for basalt FRP laminate composite pipes. The illustrated results are in excellent agreement with the experimental results available in the literature, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique.

  • In this paper, a closed-form rigorous solution for interfacial stress in continuous steel beam with variable section strengthened with bonded prestressed FRP plates and subjected to a uniformly distributed load is developed using linear elastic theory and including the variation of fiber volume fractions with a longitudinal orientation of the fibers of the FRP plates. The results show that there exists a high concentration of both shear and normal stress at the ends of the laminate, which might result in premature failure of the strengthening scheme at these locations. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions. Overall, the predictions of the different solutions agree closely with each other. A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the sensitivity of interface behavior to parameters such as laminate and adhesive stiffness, the thickness of the laminate and the fiber volume fractions where all were found to have a marked effect on the magnitude of maximum shear and normal stress in the composite member. This research gives a numerical precision in relating to the others studies which neglect the effect of prestressed plate and the shear lag impact. The physical and geometric properties of materials are taken into account, and that may play an important role in reducing the interfacial stresses magnitude.

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the ballistic performance of fiber reinforced plastic(FRP)-steel plates completely penetrated by hemispherical-nosed projectiles at sub-ordnance velocities greater than their ballistic limits. The FRP-steel plate consists of a front FRP laminate and a steel backing plate. Failure mechanisms and impact energy absorptions of FRP-steel plates were analyzed and compared with FRP laminates and single steel plates. The effects of relative thickness, manufacturing method and fabric type of front composite armors as well as the joining style between front composite armors and steel backing plates on the total perforation resistance of FRP-steel plates were explored. It is found that in the case of FRP-steel plates completely penetrated by hemispherical-nosed projectiles at low velocities, the failure modes of front composite armors are slightly changed while for steel backing plates, the dominate failure modes are greatly changed due to the influence of front composite armors. The relative thickness and fabric type of front composite armors as well as the joining style of FRP-steel plates have large effects whereas the manufacturing method of front composite armors has slight effect on the total perforation resistance of FRP-steel plates.

  • A hybrid composite (APAL;Aramid Patched ALuminum alloy, CPAL;Carbon Patched ALluminum alloy), consisting of a Al 2024-T3 aluminum alloy plate sandwiched between two aramid/epoxy and carbon/epoxy laminate, was developed. Fatigue crack growth behavior was examined at stress ratios of R=0.2, 0.5. The APAL and CPAL showed superior fatigue crack growth resistance, which may be attributed to the crack bridging effect imposed by the intact fibers in the crack wake.

  • Approximately 90,000 ships are registered in South Korea, and about 80,000 of these ships are used in domestic shipping. Among these, 84% are small ships, such as a fishing vessels that weigh less than 20 tons and are made mostly of an FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastics). When this fact is taken into account, the greenhouse gas emissions that are released per ton of a composite vessel are sizeable. In this study, the laminated structures of an FRP fishing vessel, many of which currently are being built in Korea, were analyzed by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and international design rules, and the structures of the hulls are lightweight with optimum glass fiber mass content as determined by the laminate weight minimization algorithm. As a result, it was confirmed that the laminations of the vessels in accordance with the Korean rule could have 6.4% to approximately 11% more design margin compared to the requirements of ISO and other international rules. And the case study of the application of the laminate weight minimization algorithm showed the possibility of reducing the weight of the hull bottom plating by as much as about 19.32% and by as much as about 18.06% in the overall structure.

  • In order to determine a minimum thickness of the pultruded GFRP panel as a structural member, some experimental studies were performed. GFRP tubes with 2mm, 4mm, 6mm thickness were manufactured by pultrusion process. First, coupon tests for finding mechanical properties were carried out. Comparisons between test results and analysis results based on classical laminate theory showed large differences in case of 2mm, 4mm specimens. The reason is that it is difficult to apply appropriate pultruding force and keep layered stitched fabric flat for the pultrusion process of complex shaped FRP member with small thickness. On the consequence, we decide 6mm as a minimum thickness of FRP member. Second, 4-point bending tests were performed and the results with compared with numerical analysis. The behavior of FRP tube can be exactly predicted by numerical analysis if buckling analysis is included.

  • The advanced piezoelectric ceramic composite actuator, which is called LIPCA with the FRP and the optimization of the laminate configuration, was performed to maximize the stress transfer and the fiber bridging effect. This study evaluated the effect of variable electric fields on the PZT characteristic, laminate configuration and fatigue characteristics under the resonance frequency, which meant the largest performance range and the changes of its interlaminar phase were also evaluated by stages. In conclusions, Comparing with the fatigue lift of intact LIPCA, the fatigue life of LIPCA embedded by the artificial delamination was decreased up to 50%. The micro void growth and the coalescence of epoxy were actively made at the interlaminar phase subject to the large tensile stress.
