  • We present a structure of a reflective Fabry-Perot etalon with nonlinear Kerr material (Kerr FP etalon), and report the polarization conversion and the optical bistability of polarization conversion. A device proposed has high polarization conversion ratio, 100% or so, and good/broad optical bistablity for input pump intensity.

  • We fabricated the asymmetric Fabry-Perot etalon which contains amorphous $As_2S_3$ as a spacer layer by using the method of optical multilayer coating and observed the optical bistability with the polarization. Optical thickness of the spacer layer is 2$\lambda$ at $Ar^+$ ($\lambda $=514.5 nm) laser wavelength. Optical bistability was observed at the intensities between 80~100 mW and the experiment shows us that the trends of bistable loop of the reflected and the transmitted lights are quite different depending on the state of polarization. This phenomena can be explained as the phase differences of each polarizations are different in the nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon.

  • We examine the principle of a modified Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique to measure the free spectral range of a Fabry-Perot etalon (FPE). The FPE's periodic transmission of phase-modulated light allows us to adopt a sampling theorem to develop a new relationship for the PDH error signal. This leads us to find the key parameters governing the measurement accuracy: the phase modulation index ${\beta}$ and the FPE finesse. Without any additional complexity for background noise reduction, we achieve a measurement accuracy of 0.5 ppm. The improvement is mainly attributed to the wide-band phase modulation approaching ${\beta}=10$, and partly to the use of both reflected and transmitted light from the FPE and good FPE finesse.

  • We report stable, wideband, flat-topped, 10 GHz optical frequency comb generation from a semiconductor-based mode-locked ring laser with an intra-cavity high finesse Fabry-Perot etalon. We demonstrate a stable 10 GHz comb with greater than 200 lines within a spectral power variation below 1 dB, which is the largest value obtained from a similar mode-locked laser in our knowledge. Greater than 20 dB of the spectral peak to deep ratio at 0.02 nm resolution, ~92 femtosecond timing jitter over 1 kHz to 1 MHz range, and non-averaged time traces of pulses confirm very stable optical frequency comb lines.

  • A method for the measurement of the concentration of methane is experimentally demonstrated. The wavelength filter and gas cell are combined by using one Fabry-Perot etalon, which is filmed with the reflectivity of 96%. The optical broadband source is not only filtered to match the absorption wavelength of methane, but also absorbed by the methane in the same Fabry-Perot etalon. The concentration of the methane can be detected directly by measuring the transmission intensity. Compared with the conventional method, the proposed method possesses low costand high stability.

  • We report a measurement of the effective refractive index of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) inside a Fabry-Perot (FP) etalon according to the applied electric fields. The effective refractive index of the NLC depends on the intensity of the applied electric field. A wavelength-swept laser with a polygon-scanner-based wavelength filter is used as a wide-band optical source to measure the effective refractive index of the NLC. The bandwidth of the optical source is greater than 90 nm around 1300 nm. The fabricated NLC FP etalon consists of glass substrates, gold layers as the electrodes with highly reflective surfaces, polyimide layers as the planar alignment layers, and an LC layer. Furthermore, we measured the Freedericksz transition voltages for three types of NLC FP etalons having thicknesses of $30.6{\mu}m$, $55.4{\mu}m$, and $108.8{\mu}m$. The Freedericksz transition voltages in the three cases are nearly equal. The measured effective refractive indices in the three cases decreased from 1.67 to 1.51 as the applied electric field intensity was increased. Beyond the threshold electric field, the effective refractive indices quickly decreased and eventually saturated at a value of 1.51 for all cases.

  • A three-wavelength $Pr^{3+}:YLF$ laser at 604 nm, 607 nm and 640 nm simultaneously output by Fabry-Perot (F-P) etalon has been obtained. A 444 nm blue laser diode is used for pumping the $Pr^{3+}:YLF$ crystal, and a 0.1 mm F-P etalon is inserted in the resonator to select wavelength. The theoretical model of three-wavelength $Pr^{3+}:YLF$ laser is established, by adjusting the tilt angle of the etalon, the transmittances of the different wavelengths can be controlled, and the threshold values can be made to equalize by controlling the loss among different wavelengths. In the experiment, when the tilt angle of etalon is $9^{\circ}$ and the optimized length of resonator is 48 mm, the total output power of 25 mW at the three-wavelength is achieved at incident pump power of 7.5 W.

  • In this study, we developed a FFPI (fiber optic Fabry-Perot interferometer) pressure sensor using the Si diaphragm which measures pressure in vivo. The diaphragm and its supporting structure were etched in KOH solution and were fabricated with micromachining technology. For the configuration of the sensor, the length of the cavity of the Fabry-Perot etalon is 15 mm and one end of the etalon was bonded to a Si diaphragm with 507m thickness. When the area of the Si diaphragm was 2$\times$2 mm2 (cavity length 15 mm), it turns out that the pressure sensitivity was about 1.5 degree/kPa. The pressure sensor developed in this study showed that the phase change was linearly proportional to the increasing pressure in the range of 80 kPa.

  • We present a novel description of TE nonlinear guided waves in planar waveguides with two nonlinear bounding thin films. The nonlinear dispersion relations of the nonlinear waveguides are obtained by adopting the nonlinear transfer matrix. The optical properties obtained from these equations include: the power dependence of mode indices, the transition of the field maximum location, and the power distribution. The planar waveguide with self-focusing nonlinear layers shows the optical bistability of power-dependent mode indices, and the critical powers for the optical bistability increase with decreasing thickness of the nonlinear layers. The power distributions display the optical bistabilities, similar to those of nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon.

  • A signal processing system of long period grating sensor that works in the optical wavelength domain is proposed. The system is based on a wavelength-swept semiconductor light source that includes an SLD and a F-P tunable filter. The hysteresis effects of PZT in the F-P filter is compensated by using an etalon filter and an athermal Fiber Bragg Grating. The detected signals from the photodiode are transmitted to a computer using an A/D converter and the result of the process is displayed in the monitor.
