A Study on Characteristics of Korean Community Cinema : Focusing on the history of the Korean alternative screening movement (한국 커뮤니티 시네마 특성 연구:한국 대안상영 운동의 역사를 중심으로)

  • This paper studies the change process and characteristics of the 'Korean community cinema movement'. The community cinema movement that has been active since the 2010's can be said to be a turning point in the Korean film culture movement. However, academic and policy definitions and research on the community cinema movement are extremely insufficient and only appear in some seminars or policy research reports. This study aims to discover the characteristics of the 'Korean community cinema movement' in the flow of the Korean alternative screening movement. A comparative study through a diachronic approach to the Korean alternative screening movement and case analysis of community cinema is intended to identify the characteristics of Korean community cinema and suggest policy measures for which a support system has not yet been prepared.

  • The commercial value of the Korean animation was developed by the government's policies of revitalizing reform and national harmony from 1960 to the middle of 1980. Especially, the character of the anti communistic animation was organized by the structure of confrontation between South (good) and North (evil). The confrontation was viewed by communism and liberal democracy by red and white (or blue) and a pig or a boy. Such ideology and the policy of Korean culture gave some impact on its culture, for example, movie and animation. The animation became the tool of educating the idea of anti-communism and the policy of Korean culture by firming the policy of anti communism. But that animation of anti communism must not be blamed because it is a general animation of Korea which describes the reality. We have to take a hard view of the time and reconsider it by the new point of view.

  • France is the country who maintains a strong protective policy in her culture area. Under the famous slogan of 'Cultural Diversity' or 'Cultural Exception,' France stands against the globalizing policy of USA. Also in the area of audiovisual contents, France maintains her protective policy in order to protect her cinematic territory against the invasion of Hollywood movies. Among the various supporting systems of French Government, we would like to pay closer attention to the supporting system for young film makers and the role of CNC (Centre National $Cin\`{e}matographique$) in this system. So, this article will examine how CNC, as a governmental agency, controls the supporting system in French audiovisual area, and what kinds of process it operates to offer the substantial aid to French young film makers' work.

  • Korean Film Council (KOFIC) is entrusted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Republic of Korea, aiming to support and promote Korean films. With the government's policy for balanced regional development, KOFIC head office will be relocated to Busan. Busan is famous for the Busan International film Festival and their effort for Korean film industry. Until now, the Korean film industry is concentrated on the Seoul metropolitan areas. With the relocation of KOFIC, it is the time for KOFIC to recognize and promote and Busan as the Second key Cluster of Korean film industry. With the cooperation with Busan Film Commission, KOFIC needs to set up the new promotion plan for Korean film industry for future including building new film production studio, raising regional film production fund, and scouting new talented filmmakers.

  • Feminism on the theme of gender equality is emerging as an important issue in the overall Korean culture. Feminism is not only a level of claiming or advocating women's rights, but an essential subject of gaze and thought, not a distorted, artificially portrayed image of women distorted or typified in a story created by men in the past It is a film that explores the problem of the individual's life in society fundamentally. Jun Koeun's movie' 'micro-habitat'(2018) 'expresses a feminist theme that shows a strong self - selection and transcendental thinking in male - oriented stereotypes and inequal social structure. The film, which focuses on the public insight into society and the enhancement of the ideal human being from the viewpoint that the public film should lead the educated enlightenment character that raises the broad insight into the world and lead the mature social culture, I think it will play a big role.

  • Multicultural theories fully fledged around the 1980s and the early 1990s. Emerging in the 1960s thanks to the Civil Rights movement, multiculturalism has become the grand American national narratives, whose tenets recognize and respect people with diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. This period, however, witnessed the eruption of violent and destructive rebellions or uprisings involving racial minorities. Racial conflicts and tensions exploded at the moment when multiculturalism was widely practiced in areas including education and public policy revealing that complicated problems are embedded in the urban ghettos. American popular culture, specifically addresses antagonisms among different races or ethnicities in Bed-Stuy in New York. Although the film is mainly concerned with the collision among races, it lets ambivalent and cacophonous values and ideologies be present in the black community. On the other hand, Ice Cube's "Black Korea" empowers the black community when it deals with the turbulent relationship between black residents and Korean American merchants. Simultaneously, it denigrates Korean Americans as gasta raps often target the institution like government or police. In short, while attempts to search the ideas of coexistence and juxtaposition through polyphonic features embodied in the film "Black Korea" seems to depend on the dualistic system when it deals with the black-Korean conflicts and as a result it just reveals the chasm between two communities.

  • Once, the faster the digital technology developed, the more provocative obscure commercial film has spread like a trend. Researching the aspect of the successful films, about 10 million audience in 2016, we can find the similarities that only social phenomenon, stands itself without real-existence, which makes public sentiment. I will list up all the problems that I mention above with audience's review and analyze the famous film "the wailing" with big social attention, having 6.8 million audience. I will seek the better way to developthis movie, in terms of artistic dignity and depth as an public-art. With great depth, the realistic application of cultural inheritance, holding mankind common, such as culture, philosophy, religion, history, would be an essential proposition for obtaining cultural emotional empathy from the people in the society. Based on this, the theme and massage from a director, should be expressed in order to be a master piece work beyond time and space in the film history.

  • Korea's film industry structure is focused on commercial movies centering on large companies, and its diversity and artistry are relatively overlooked. In addition to trends in the digital media age, the flood of consumable contents on the basis of special effects such as C.G, And is losing popularity as a popular art. The popular art should lead the mature social culture with the educational enlightenment character which induces the indirect experience and the wide insight of the world through the material and expression about the humanities study of the individual and the society. The analysis of the society's artistry and artistry about the movie "(2017)" can be a measure of the definition and kind of artistry in commercial movies and methodology about the manifestation of artistry. As a research methodology, we try to measure the future of the film industry by analyzing the status of the film as popular art, such as intellectual exploration and logical completeness of the essence of society, Through analyzing and criticizing the artistic characteristics in commercial films, I would like to suggest some improvement points by deriving the indicators of the artistic nature of commercial films. The film "1987" is a good example of an ideal commercial film with an artistry that cultivates cultural literacy, promotes civic consciousness through enlightenment messages, and plays a role of self-reflection through art experience. This study examines the meaning and the effect of fantasy realism through Oasis of Lee Chang-dong. Fantastic realism has separated the reality from the imaginary space by using a dual meaning tool that affects the time and space in the film and reflects the human desire and desire to see. It was also reproduced in the real world through the medium of pigeons. In addition, it separates visualized space from non-visualized space in film narrative structure, separation of real and unreal space, segregation of consciousness and unconscious space, and separation of reality and reality space into power structure.
