  • The present study was to investigate the purification of a fermentation broth by an electromicrofiltration membrane. Microfiltration runs with a crude and a centrifuged broth, with solution of particles recovered from centrifugation and with permeates from microfiltration experiments were thus compared. Microfiltration performances were governed by colloids and small particles that induced sharp initial flux declines. For these results, the evolution of the overall membrane resistance was increased by $80\%$ in comparison with the electromicrofiltration membrane. The main focus of this study was set on the enhancement of the filtrate flux by an electric field. This pressure electrofiltration leads to a drastic improvement of the filtration by $100\%$ and the filtration time was thereby reduced. Pressure electrofiltration serves as an interesting alternative to the cross-flow filtration and it effectively separates advantageous constituents such as amino acids and biopolymers from a fermentation broth. They were equally maintained during the microelectrofiltration, although they were significantly reduced by $45\%$ by the microfiltration without the application of an electric field. Accordingly, since the electrofiltration membrane was provided more permeability, this study experimentally demonstrates that the permeability inside a membrane can be controlled using an electric field.

  • Displayed result that handle particle contaminant and hydrospace organism included in number of ballast that is happened in ship using automatic bade washing filter. Reason that remove first contaminant that is included in number of ballast is that heighten processing effect of after processing process. of the filter. Another advantage is to drop off the solids with controlling revolution of drum screen in pretreatment filtration process. The fact that it is easy to attach and detach a several type of screen for getting the expected water quality is another advantage. Filter rotation speed at 1.0rpm is filter resistance 3.0bar and 3.0rpm is filter resistance 2.8bar. Filter out impurities from ballast water over 6.0rpm is filter resistance 26bar and 10rpm is filter resistance 2.5bar. Filtration system removal aquatic organism over $80{\mu}m$ in ballast water. • Flat membrane with $0.4{\mu}m$ pore size was prepared with PVdF (polyvinylidene fluoride) nanofiber, which has the advantages such as excellent strength, chemical resistance, non-toxicity, and incombustibility. The spiral wound module was manufactured with the flat membrane and a woven paper. Hybrid water treatment process was composed of the PVdF nanofibers spiral wound microfiltration and granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption column. Effect of GAC packing mass was investigated by comparing the case of recycling or discharging the treated water using the synthetic solution of kaolin and humic acid. After each filtration experiment, water back-washing was performed, and recovery rate and filtration resistances were calculated. Also, effect of GAC adsorption was compared by measuring turbidity and $UV_{254}$ absorbance. As a result, there was no effect of GAC packing mass on turbidity treatment rate; however, the treatment rate of $UV_{254}$ absorbance was 0.7~3.6% for recycling the treated water, and increased to 3.2-5.7% for discharging the treated water. In the case of recycling the treated water, reversible filtration resistance ($R_r$) and irreversible filtration resistance ($R_{ir}$) trended to decrease as increasing GAC packing mass; however, total fitration resistance ($R_t$) was almost constant, and recovery rate of water back-washing trended to increase a little.

  • In this study, applicability of the decentralized water supply system were investigated by the high flux evaluation using ceramic membrane with combined pretreatment process. A) filtration process increased the transmembrane pressure of 1.4 kPa and 89.5 kPa on 2 and $5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$ of filtration flux, respectively, the physical backwashing recovery rate were less than 28.6%. The (B) Coag./Floc. - Sedi. combined process with 4 mg / L of A-PAC showed that the transmembrane pressure increased to within 6 kPa, the physical backwashing recovery rate was over 37.9 % higher than (A) Filtration process. (C) Coag./Floc. combined process showed an increase of transmembrane pressure compared with (B) Coag./Floc. - Sedi. combined process, physical backwashing recovery rate was over 84%. As a result of the membrane fouling analysis using the resistance in series model, the combined pretreatment process showed that the cake resistance (Rc) was more than 92% at membrane filtration flux of $2m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$. In the (C) Coag./Floc. combined process, cake resistance(Rc) was over 86% on high flux conditions. The coagulation floc contained in influent was removed by the membrane, and the cake layer formed with the removed floc was identified as reversible fouling resistance which could be recovered by physical backwashing. The decentralized water supply system, which has the limitation of site area and installation space, is considered to could be operation of high flux of ceramic membrane by applying (C) Coag./Floc. combined process without sedimentation process.

  • Well production by a riverbank filtration facility with multi-radial collector well systems in Jeungsan-ri, Changnyeong gun, Korea was evaluated. In this study, the drawdown at collector wells due to pumping and groundwater inflow rates along the horizontal arms of the collector wells were computed through numerical simulations. Sensitivities of the well production to hydraulic conductivity and well flow coefficient, which represents the resistance to the flow from the aquifer to the horizontal arms, were analyzed. Simulation results showed that, with given proposed pumping rate conditions, the drawdown in the caisson exceeded maximum drawdown constraints in the study site and the adjustment of the pumping rate at each well is needed. The drawdown is affected by the hydraulic conductivity of the main aquifer and the well flow coefficient, which means the profound field investigation of the study site is needed to accurately estimate the efficiency of riverbank filtration through radial collector wells.

  • The present study is devoted to the validation of a new method for in line electrokinetic characterisation of deposits on membrane surfaces. This method is based upon simultaneous measurements of transversal streaming potential and permeates flux at constant pressure before and during the deposit formation. Dead-end filtration experiments were conducted with negative flat membranes forming a narrow slit channel, negative hollow fiber membranes and mono-dispersed suspensions of (negatively charged) polystyrene latex and (positively charged) melamine particles at various concentrations. It was observed that the overall streaming potential coefficient increased in absolute value with the deposited latex quantity, whereas it decreased and changed of sign during the filtration of melamine suspensions. By considering a resistance-in-series model, the streaming potential coefficient of the single deposit ($SP_d$) was deduced from the electrokinetic and hydraulic measurements. The independence of $SP_d$ with respect to growth kinetics validates the measurement method and the reliability of the proposed procedure for calculating $SP_d$. It was found that $SP_d$ levelled off much more quickly when filtration was performed through the slit channel. This different behaviour could result from a non-uniform distribution of the deposit thickness along the membrane given that the position of measuring electrodes is different between the two cells.

  • Effect of three additives, chitosan, ferric chloride, and MPE50 on membrane fouling reduction was studied. They were introduced with various dosing rate into activated sludge, and changes in filtration resistance measured by the batch cell filtration test were evaluated. Both the filtration resistance and the specific cake resistance were minimized at 20 mg/g-MLSS with chitosan, 70 mg/g-MLSS with ferric chloride, and 20 mg/g-MLSS with MPE50 addition, respectively. Introduction of the additives into the activated sludge resulted in reduction of not only cake resistance, but also fouling resistance. However, the chitosan addition to three different activated sludge resulted in three different optimal dose of 10, 20, 30 mg/g-MLSS, respectively. This implies that the optimal dose is dependent on sludge characteristics rather than a constant value. Overdose above the optimal dosage always aggravated filterability in all cases. Zeta potential of sludge flocs, relative hydrophobicity, floc size distribution, soluble EPS concentration and supernatant turbidity were measured in order to analyze fouling reduction mechanism. Nearly neutral surface charge along with the largest particle size was observed at the optimal dose. This could be explained by particle destabilization and restabilization mechanism as positively charged additives were injected into sludge flocs of negative surface charge. Both soluble EPS concentration and supernatant turbidity also showed the lowest value at the optimal dose. These foulants are believed to be coagulated and entrapped in sludge flocs during flocculation. Chitosan and MPE50 which are cationic polymeric substances showed higher reduction in both soluble EPS and fine particles comparing with ferric chloride.

  • In this study, effect of inorganic particles on organic fouling was investigated by a laboratory-scaled pressurized membrane filtration. In order to cause organic fouling, sodium alginate (SA) was used as a feed solution. Regardless of the presence of inorganic SiO2 particles, the complete pore blocking played an important role in determining the fouling rate during the initial period of membrane filtration. However, the formation of cake layer resulted in the membrane fouling more dominantly as filtration time progressed. In the presence of inorganic particles, both specific cake resistance and compressibility associated with the membrane fouling formed were relatively lower than that without SiO2 particles. Membrane fouling was more severe at constant flux mode of filtration than that observed at constant pressure mode probably due to the concomitant increase of compressibility of fouling layer with transmembrane pressure (TMP). It was found that the presence of SA and SiO2 particles in feed solution provided the synergistic effect on the hydraulic backwashing to reduce membrane fouling as compared to the SA solution alone without the inorganic particles.

  • A study is to predict the effective pulsing distance following to the pulsing pressure, nozzle diameter, filtration velocity using numercial analysis techniques and use it as an efficient operation condition and economic data for on-line type pulse air jet bag filter. Filtration area 6 m2 condition, calculate filter resistance coefficient for simulation through the primary experiments using coke dust. For CFD simulation, analysis pulsing characteristics about nozzle diameter, filtration velocity and pulsing pressure. The maximum pulsing length of on-line type pulse air jet bag filter, in 10mm nozzle, filtration velocity 1.5m/min and pulsing pressure 5 bar conditions, is 2,285 mm, maximum length is 76.2% of the total filter bag, which is sufficient to pulsing. In 12mm nozzle, pulsing pressure 5 bar and filtration area 1.22 m2 conditions, the maximum pulsing length of on-line type pulse air jet bag filter is 1,744~2,952 mm, and the maximum length is 2,952 mm indicates pulsing air can be reached to the bottom of filter bag. When the nozzle diameter is increased 8mm to 10mm, maximum pulsing length is extended 40~47%, and increased 10mm to 12 mm, maximum pulsing length is extended 10~17%. For effective pulsing, over the 5bar of pulsing pressure and larger than 10 mm of nozzle diameter are required.
