  • Recent development in large area flat-panel x-ray detector technology enables clinical application of digital tomosyntesis. Unlike conventional motion tomography using x-ray films, flat-panel x-ray detectors provide projection images in digital formats so that tomographic images can be synthesized in a more flexible way. For the digital tomosynthesis, precise movements of the x-ray source and the x-ray detector with respect to a fulcrum point are necessary. In this study, we apply the digital tomosynthesis technique to the flat-panel detector based micro-CT in which the flat-panel detector and the x-ray source rotate together on a circular arc. The experimental results suggest that flat-panel detector based 3D CTs can be used for digital tomosynthesis in the clinical environment.

  • The detector for digital radiography testing, which is currently mainly used, consists of a detector with a flat structure, making it impossible to fully adhere to the digital radiography testing of the test object with curvature. In this study, a curved panel detector capable of adhering to curvature was fabricated to improve the quality of the digital image during the digital radiography testing of piping welds at industrial sites, and digital radiography images using flat and curved panel detectors were obtained for 6in pipes with different nominal thickness. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the flat panel detector does not fully adhere to the pipe, resulting in a gap between the outer part of the pipe and the detector, resulting in a difference in the unsharpness and diffusion of the digital image. On the other hand, it was confirmed that the curved panel detector minimizes the gap between the pipe outer part and the detector, so that digital image diffusion is less than that of the flat panel detector. The higher the confidence of the image, the lower the quality and error in reading, so it is believed that higher quality images can be obtained than conventional flat panel detectors when using detectors that can be closely attached to the inspection object.

  • The most troublesome artifacts in micro computed tomography (micro-CT) are ring artifacts. The ring artifacts are caused by non-uniform sensitivity and defective pixels of the x-ray detector. These ring artifacts seriously degrade the quality of CT images. In flat-panel detector based micro-CT systems, the ring artifacts are hardly removed by conventional correction methods of digital radiography, because very small difference of detector pixel signals may make severe ring artifacts. This paper presents a novel method to remove ring artifacts in flat-panel detector based micro-CT systems. First, the bad lines of a sinogram which are caused by defective pixels of the detector are identified, and then, they are corrected using a cubic spline interpolation technique. Finally, a ring artifacts free image is reconstructed from the corrected projections. We applied the method to various kinds of objects and found that the image qualities were much improved.

  • The properties of these detectors can be controlled by electronics and exposure conditions. Flat-panel detectors for digital diagnostic imaging convert incident x-ray images to charge images. Flat panel detectors gain more interest real time medical x-ray imaging. Active area of flat panel detector is $14{\times}17$ inch. Detector is based on a $2560{\times}3072$ away of photoconductor and TFT pixels. X-ray conversion layer is deposited upper TFT array flat panel with a 500m by thermal deposition technology. Thickness uniformity of this layer is made of thickness control technology(5%) of thermal deposition system. Each $139m{\times}139m$ pixel is made of thin film transistor technology, a storage capacitor and charge collection electrode having geometrical fill factor of 86%. Using the separate driving system of two dimensional mosaic modules for large area, that is able to 4.2 second per frame. • The purpose of this work was to evaluate an amorphous silicon cesium iodide based indirect flat-panel detector (FPD) in terms of their modulation transfer function (MTF), Wiener spectrum (WS, or noise power spectrum, NPS), and detective quantum efficiency (DQE). Measurements were made on flat-panel detector using the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) defined RQA3, RQA5, RQA7, and RQA9 radiographic technique. The MTFs of the systems were measured using an edge method. The WS(NPS) of the systems were determined for a range of exposure levels by two-dimensional (2D). Fourier analysis of uniformly exposed radiographs. The DQEs were assessed from the measured MTF, WS(NPS), exposure, and estimated ideal signal-to-noise ratios. Characteristic curve in the RQA3 showed difference in the characteristic curve from RQA5, RQA7, RQA9. MTFs were not differences according to x-ray beam quality. WS(NPS) was reduced with increasing dose, and RQA 3, RQA5, RQA7, RQA9 as the order is reduced. DQE represented the best in the 1mR, RQA 3, RQA5, RQA7, RQA9 decrease in the order. The physical imaging characteristics of FPD may also differ from input beam quality. This study gives an initial motivation that the physical imaging characteristics of FPD is an important issue for the right use of digital radiography system.

  • The Recently, large area matrix-addressed image detectors are investigated for X-ray imaging with medical diagnostic and other applications. In this paper, a new flat panel gas detector for diagnostic X-ray imaging is proposed, and its characteristics are investigated. The research of flat panel gas detector is not exist at all. Because of difficulty to inject gas against to atmospheric pressure. So almost gas detector made by chamber shape. We made flat panel sample by display technique. (ex: PDP, Fed, etc.) The experimental measurements, the transparent electrodes, dielectric layer, and the MgO protection layer were formed in front glass. And, the X-ray phosphor layer and address electrodes are formed in the rare glass. The dark current, the x-ray sensitivity and linearity as a function of electric field were measured to investigate the electrical properties. From the results, the stabilized dark current density and the significant x-ray sensitivity were obtained. And the good linearity as a function of exposure dose was showed in wide diagnostic energy range. These results means that the passive matrix-addressed flat panel gas detector can be used for digital x-ray imaging.

  • For a next generation PET that realizes high sensitivity and high resolution, we proposed a design of a depth of interaction detector. A unit of the detector is constructed of four stages rectangular blocks of 2 by 2 Gd$_2$SiO$\sub$5/: Ce (GSO) crystal array optically coupled to position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMT). The 256ch flat panel PS-PMT is under development by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., JAPAN. It has large cathode area, 51.7 by 51.7 mm$^2$, and the ratio of the effective area to external size is about 90%. The feature will contribute high packing fraction, accordingly high sensitivity. The 256 anodes are arranged in 16 by 16 at intervals of 3.0 mm. So as to evaluate the detector capability for identifying crystal of interaction, we got positioning image histograms with coupling a 16 by 5 array of GSO crystals, 2.9 by 2.9 by 7.5 mm$^3$, to the PS-PMT by irradiating a gamma ray uniformly from a point source. Flat panel PS-PMT is a new promising device for PET. We need to evaluate it if its performance is sufficiency. The performance was compared to the one with a 16ch PS-PMT.

  • Recently, amorphous selenium is used as x-ray conversion material for flat-panel x-ray detector. In this paper, we investigated the effect of breakdown under high voltage and leakage current in PN-type multi-layer structure based on p-type a-Se and n-type conductive thin film. Experimental results show that the multi-layer based detector reduced leakage current because n-type CeO2 conductive layer prevent from hole injection into a-Se layer from collection electrode, Also, the breakdown voltage was improved by dielectric layer between a-Se and top electrode.
