  • This paper presents electromagnetic force effect of the conductor and insulator in the HVDC valve hall. This paper is based on IEC 60865, which is applicable to the mechanical and thermal effects of short-circuit currents. The paper contains procedures for the calculation of the electromagnetic effect on HVDC conductors and flexible conductors, as well as the thermal effect on HVDC conductors. The results are applied to the Godeok -Dangjin HVDC system.

  • This paper presents the study results of four transmission methods to enchance transmission capability. The four transmission methods studied were FACTS, HVDC, High Phase Order and new conductor material method. The study was Performed based on mid and long term KEPCO system in 2000 and 2006 year. Among them FACTS(Flexible AC Transmission System) is an exciting new field which holds great promise for improved utilization of AC transmission systems.

  • This paper describes the mechanical and electrical test on HVDC submarine cable, Flexible Repair Joint and termination for 180kV. This HVDC submarine cable was manufactured using LS cable's unique skill and would be applied the HVDC submarine cable system in korea. The performance test consist of mechanical test and electrical test. The tensile bending test and tensile test was done as the mechanical test and Electrical test is DC voltage and Impulse test. The tensile bending test carried out 6 times(double of specified times) for maximum reliability. The DC test voltage is $\pm$400kV/1hr. We estimate the lower limit of DC breakdown voltage is 600kV. The impulse test voltage is $\pm$800kV/10shots. The type of developed cables is the MI type. Its insulation consist of paper tapes impregnated with a high viscosity oil. The development of new HVDC cable is available for HVDC underground or submarine power transmission. The developed HVDC cable, FRJ and termination have passed the mechanical and electrical test successfully and showed excellent performance.

  • This paper presents a comparative operating characteristics of static var compensator(SVC) and static synchronous compensator(STATCOM) for compensating the reactive power in the Jeju power system. There are two kinds of reactive power compensating systems, which are active and passive system in the applications of the line commutated converter type high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC). In the Jeju power system, two STATCOMs as active compensating system have been operating. Even though STATCOM has good performance compared with SVC, economical efficiency of former system is not good to the latter system. So, it is necessary to examine the performance and economical efficiency depend on the intention before appling the system. To compare the operating characteristics of two systems in the Jeju power system, simulations have been carried out for case studies that both of the HVDC system have transient state by using PSCAD/EMTDC program.

  • This paper presents the new power dissipation model of individual switching device in a high-level modular multilevel converter (MMC), which can be mostly used in voltage sourced converter (VSC) based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system and flexible AC transmission system (FACTS). Also, the voltage balancing method based on sorting algorithm is newly proposed to advance the MMC functionalities by effectively adjusting switching variations of the sub-module (SM). The proposed power dissipation model does not fully calculate the average power dissipation for numerous switching devices in an arm module. Instead, it estimates the power dissipation of every switching element based on the inherent operational principle of SM in MMC. In other words, the power dissipation is computed in every single switching event by using the polynomial curve fitting model with minimum computational efforts and high accuracy, which are required to manage the large number of SMs. After estimating the value of power dissipation, the thermal condition of every switching element is considered in the case of external disturbance. Then, the arm modeling for high-level MMC and its control scheme is implemented with the electromagnetic transient simulation program. Finally, the case study for applying to the MMC based HVDC system is carried out to select the appropriate insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) module in a steady-state, as well as to estimate the proper thermal condition of every switching element in a transient state.
