  • The propellant acquisition vane (PAV) is a key part of a vane type surface tension propellant management device (PMD), which can manage the propellant effectively. In the present paper, the fluid transportation behaviors for five PAVs with different sections were investigated by using microgravity drop tower test. Further, numerical simulation for the propellant flow in a PMD under microgravity condition was also carried out based on VOF model, and showed the similar flow pattern for PAVs to the experiment. It is noted that the section geometry of PAVs is one of the main factors affecting the fluid transportation behavior of PMD. PAVs with bottom length ratio of 5/6 and 1/2 have larger propellant transportation velocity. Based on the experiments, there were two stages during the process of propellant transportation under microgravity environment: liquid relocation and steady transportation stage. It is also recognized that there is a linear correlation between liquid transportation velocity and relative time's square root. Those results can not only provide a guideline for optimization of new vane type PMDs, but also are helpful for fluid control applications in space environment.

  • Given the domestic situation, all nuclear power plants are located at the seaside, where interim storage sites are also likely to be located and maritime transportation is considered inevitable. Currently, Korea does not have an independently developed maritime transportation risk assessment code, and no research has been conducted to evaluate the release rate of radioactive waste from a submerged transportation cask in the sea. Therefore, secure technology is necessary to assess the impact of immersion accidents and establish a regulatory framework to assess, mitigate, and prevent maritime transportation accidents causing serious radiological consequences. The flow rate through a gap in a containment boundary should be calculated to determine the accurate release rate of radionuclides. The fluid flow through the micro-scale gap can be evaluated by combining the flow inside and outside the transportation cask. In this study, detailed computational fluid dynamic and simplified models are constructed to evaluate the internal flow in a transportation cask and to capture the flow and heat transfer around the transportation cask in the sea, respectively. In the future, fluid flow through the gap will be evaluated by coupling the models developed in this study.

  • When the liquid with the additive of ppm unit of a polymer flows, the pressure drop can be manifestly decreased compared to that of pure liquid: that's the drag reduction. This method is that a small amount of a polymer which doesn't make the transformation of the properties of the working fluid is dissolved into the working fluid, the links of chains of the polymer do a buffer action to the molecules of the working fluid which come out between near the wall of the pipe and the interface, so that the pressure drop is dramatically decreased. When we transport the fluid, therefore, we can save a lot of pumping power, or we can increase the transportation capacity with using the same transportation equipment. But when a polymer solution is also flowing in the fluid transportation system, the degradation which have a very close relation with the phenomena of the drag reduction occurs necessarily. When adding polymer to reduce the drag in two phase flow system, It is impossible to find some studies. This study is focussing on a searching examination for the experimental study considering the mechanical degradation in the closed tow phase system to find out the conditions which could improve the pump capacity.

  • This paper proposes a numerical model to simulate the rotational behavior of steel fiber in fresh cement-based materials in the presence of a magnetic field. The results indicate that as the aspect ratio of fiber increases, the required minimum magnetic field intensity to make fiber rotate in viscous fluid increases. The optimal magnetic field intensity is 0.03 T for aligning steel fiber in fresh cement-based materials to ensure that the applying time of the magnetic field can be conducted concurrently with the vibrating process to increase the aligning efficiency. The orientation factor of steel fiber in cement mortar can exceed 0.85 after aligning by 0.03 T of the uniform magnetic field. When the initial angle of the fiber to the magnetic field direction is less than 10°, the magnetic field less than 0.03 T cannot make the fiber overcome the yield stress of fluid to rotate. The coarse aggregate in steel fiber-reinforced concrete is detrimental to the rotation and alignment of the steel fiber. But the orientation factor of ASFRC under the 0.03T of the magnetic field can also exceed 0.8, while the orientation factor of SFRC without magnetic field application is around 0.6.

  • Ejector is an equipment devised for making use of the low pressure occurring from the fast fluid injection and it is a transportation equipment which can obtain vacuum using the kinetic energy of the fluid. This ejector system is, nowadays, widely used for construction machinery, heavy equipments, the cooling and ventilation of electronic devices and for the various fluid transportation and pumps. In this study, it is attempted to perform a numerical analysis and an experiment to find out the characteristics of fluid quantity, velocity and the pressure distribution of the induction pipe by changing the length and the radius ratio of the nozzle of ejector. From the results, it is investigated that the distributions of velocity and pressure of induction pipe attached are changing with the length and the radius ratio of the nozzle. In addition, it is shown that for the small and large ejector, the efficiency is the maximum when the length of the nozzle arrived to the neck of the ejector, however, if it is installed at below or above the neck the efficiency is rather decreased.

  • The operational effect of traffic signal control improvement was evaluated using the Two-Fluid Model. The parameters engaged in the Two-Fluid Model becomes food indicators to measure the quality of traffic flow due to the improvement of traffic signal operation. A series of experiment were conduced for the 31 signalized intersections in Uijeongbu City. To estimate the parameters in the Two-Fluid Model the trajectory informations of individual vehicles were collected using the CORSIM and Run Time Extension. The test results showed 35 percent decrease of average minimum trip time per unit distance. One of the parameters in the Two-Fluid Model is a measure of the resistance of the network to the degraded operation with the increased demand. The test result showed 28 percent decrease of this parameter. In spite of the simulation results of the arterial flow, it was concluded that the Two-Fluid Model is useful tool to evaluate the improvement of the traffic signal control system from the macroscopic aspect.

  • To investigate the influence of blade profiles on cavitation behavior in impeller of centrifugal pump, a centrifugal pump with five different blade profiles impellers are studied numerically. The impellers with five different blade profiles (single arc, double arcs, triple arcs, logarithmic spiral and linear-variable angle spiral) were designed by the in-house hydraulic design code using geometric parameters of IS 150-125-125 centrifugal pump. The experiments of the centrifugal pump have been conducted to verify numerical simulation model. The numerical results show that the blade profile lines has a weak effect on cavitation inception near blade inlet edge position, however it has the key effect on the development of sheet cavitation in impeller, and also influences the distribution of sheet cavitation in impeller channels. A slight changing of blade setting angle will induce significant difference of cavitation in impeller. The sharp changing of impeller blade setting angle causes obvious cavitation region separation near the impeller inlet close to blade suction surface and much more flow loss. The centrifugal pump with blade profile of setting angle gently changing (logarithmic spiral) has the super cavitation performance, which means smaller critical cavitation number and lower vapor cavity volume fraction at the same conditions.

  • Unsteady fluid dynamics analysis of flow characteristics inside a Metal DPF system is done using a commercial CAE software, CFD-ACE+. The time profiles of both temperature and pressure of exhaust gas are given as initial conditions. It was found that the position of connecting pipes and the numbering of exhaust gases did not affect the flow uniformity. The presence of a DPF resulted in the significant flow nonuniformity effect on the flow characteristics at the inlet of the DPF. Present results can be applied to the selection of optimal geometry that produces uniform flow characteristics inside a DPF system.
