Analysis of Dynamic Characteristics of Fluidic Thrust Vector Control for the Over-expanded Supersonic Jet (과팽창 초음속제트의 방향 제어를 위한 유체역학적 제어의 동특성 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the dynamic characteristics of fluidic thrust vector control using the co-flow injection. In previous research, both numerical and experimental approaches for steady state were conducted to investigate operation-parameters and detail flow structure of the fluidic thrust vector control system. Based upon the previous results, numerical unsteady calculation was conducted to analyze the dynamic characteristics of jet up- and down-ward vectoring so that the transition time and the pressure distribution along the wall, and so on were investigated.

Study of Thrust-Vectoring Control Using Fluidic Counterflow Concept (Fluidic Counterflow 개념을 이용한 추력벡터제어에 관한 연구)

  • The thrust vector control using a fluidic counterflow concept is achieved by applying a vacuum to a slot adjacent to a primary jet which is shrouded by a suction collar. The vacuum produces a secondary reverse flowing stream near the primary jet. The shear layers between the two counterflowing streams mix and entrain mass from the surrounding fluid. The presence of the collar inhibits mass entrainment and the flow near the collar accelerates causing a drop in pressure on the collar. For the vacuum asymmetrically applied to one side of the nozzle, the jet will vector toward the low-pressure region. The present study is performed to investigate the effectiveness of thrust vector control using the fluidic counterflow concept. A computational work is carried out using the two-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with several kinds of turbulence models. The computational results are compared with the previous experimental ones. It is found that the present fluidic counterflow concept is a viable method to vector the thrust of a propulsion system.

  • Recently, fluidic thrust vector control has become a core technique to control multifarious air vehicles, such as supersonic aircraft and modern rockets. Fluidic thrust vector control using the shock vector concept has many advantages for achieving great vectoring performance, such as fast vectoring response, simple structure, and low weight. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics methods are used to study a three-dimensional rectangular supersonic nozzle with a slot injector. To evaluate the reliability and stability of computational methodology, the numerical results were validated with experimental data. The pressure distributions along the upper and lower nozzle walls in the symmetry plane showed an excellent match with the test results. Several numerical simulations were performed based on the shear stress transport(SST) $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The effect of the momentum flux ratio was investigated thoroughly, and the performance variations have been clearly illustrated.

  • Numerical simulations were carried out in a supersonic nozzle to investigate the possibility of using dual-throat nozzle concept in fluidic thrust vector control. Validation of the methodology showed an excellent agreement between the computational fluid dynamics results and the experimental data available, which were based on the well-assessed SST $k-{\omega}$ turbulence mode. The deflection angle, system resultant thrust ratio, and thrust efficiency were investigated in a wide range of nozzle pressure ratios and injection pressure ratios. The performance variations of the dual-throat nozzle thrust vector control system were clearly illustrated with this two-dimensional computational domain. Some constructive conclusions were obtained that may be used as a reference for further studies in the fluidic thrust vector control field.

  • Thrust Vectoring is a dynamic feature that offers many benefits in terms of maneuverability and control effectiveness. Thrust vectoring capabilities make the satisfaction of take-off and landing requirements easier. Moreover, it can be a valuable control effector at low dynamic pressures, where traditional aerodynamic controls are less effective. A numerical investigation of Fluidic Thrust Vectoring (FTV) is completed to evaluate the use of fluidic injection to manipulate flow separation and cause thrust vectoring of the primary jet thrust. The methodology presented is general and can be used to study different techniques of fluidic thrust vectoring like shock-vector control, sonic-plane skewing and counterflow methods. For validation purposes the method will focus on the dual-throat nozzle concept. Internal nozzle performances and thrust vector angles were computed for several range of nozzle pressure ratios and fluidic injection flow rate. The numerical results obtained are compared with the analogues experimental data reported in the scientific literature. The model is integrated using a finite volume discretization of the compressible URANS equations coupled with a Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. Second order accuracy in space and time is achieved using an ENO scheme.

  • Computational study is performed to understand the fluidic thrust vectoring control of an axisymmetric nozzle, in which secondary gas injection is made in the divergent section of the nozzle. The nozzle has a design Mach number of 2.0, and the operation pressure ratio is varied to obtain the different flow features in the nozzle flow. The injection flow rate is varied by means of the injection port pressure. Test conditions are in the range of the nozzle pressure ratio from 3.0 to 8.26 and the injection pressure ratio from 0 to 1.0. The present computational results show that, for a given nozzle pressure ratio, an increase of the injection pressure ratio produces increased thrust vector angle, but decreases the thrust efficiency.

  • 유체역학적 추력 방향 제어(Fluidic Thrust Vector Control) 방법 중 하나인 동축류 제어 유동 분사를 이용한 추력 방향 제어(Co-flow Thrust Vector Control)의 작동 특성에 대해서 연구하였다. 이 제어 방법은 점성 유동이 벽면에 부착되어 흐르는 코안다 효과(Coanda Effect)를 이용하여 주 유동을 편향 시키는 방법으로서 그 편향각은 이러한 제어 유동 노즐 출구의 플랩 형상에 영향을 받는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 연구에서는 출구 플랩 형상을 여러 가지로 바꾸어 가며 주 유동의 전압력 300kPa일 때 제어 유동의 편향각이 포화되는 제어유동의 전압력을 측정하였다. 그 결과 쐐기형 플랩의 각도가 증가할수록 포화 영역에서의 편향각은 증가하며 그 각은 플랩의 각도와 일치한다. 그러나 각도가 증가할수록 제어 유동이 플랩의 벽면을 지나면서 팽창파에 의해 가속되어 충격파을 발생시키게 되고 이 충격파는 주 유동에게까지 전파되어 주 유동 제트의 속도를 감소시킨다.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the operation characteristics of fluidic thrust vector control using injection of the control flow parallel to the main jet direction; Co-flow injection. The technique bases on the Coanda effect of flow. Both numerical and experimental studies were conducted to investigate operation parameters; flow structure, the jet deflection angle, and shock effects near the nozzle exit. While the total pressure of main jet is the range of 300 to 790 kPa, the total pressure of control flow varies from 120 to 200 kPa. The jet deflection angle and thrust coefficient have linear relation with the pressure ratio(PR) of main jet to control flow in 0.15 < PR < 0.4 but show their limit above PR = 0.4.

  • Recently, the thrust vector control using a secondary flow injection which is accomplished by injecting a secondary flow into the supersonic exhaust flow through hole in the wall of the propulsion nozzle has been attention in the applications of the rocket propulsion system. In the present study, 3-dimensional compressible, Navier-Stokes equation to understand the SITVC(Secondary Injection Thrust Vector Control) flow field. The computational results are validated with previous experimental data available. The computational results are visualized detailed structure of shock wave induced by secondary flow and deflected supersonic jets.
