  • The purposes of this study were to measure the solubility of the stannous fluoride experimentally, to find a method for improving the solubility of the stannous fluoride, and to observe the effect of longterm storage on the variation of the concentration of fluoride in the stannous fluoride solutions. By adding such materials as antiseptics, dye, flavor, and tastes to solution, the variation of the fluoride concentration was also observed. Ten groups of 0.4% stannous fluoride solutions to which glycerine, sodium chloride, chlorhexidine, dye, flavor, xylitol, and sorbitol were added were prepared. The measurements were carried out by direct calibration. The obtained results were as follows. 1. Effect of adding glycerine as solvent. : The solubility of stannous fluoride increased in the case of adding glycerine. By increasing the glycerine concentration, the fluoride level in stannous fluoride solution also increased. 2. Effect of adding sodium chloride and chlorhexidine. : Comparing to the case of pure water, low fluoride level was measured in case of adding sodium chloride and high fluoride level was measured in case of adding chlorhexidine. 3. Effect of adding erythrosin as dye and banna essence as flavor. : Adding erythrosin and banna essence didn't affect fluoride level. 4. Effect of adding xylitol and sorbitol. : The effects of xylitol and sorbitol were nearly the same as the effect of adding erythrosin and banna essence.

  • The effects of phosphate coating have been studied on physical properties and corrosion resistance of painted aluminum alloy sheet for automobile body. The physical properties (surface roughness, paint adhesion, impact resistance and pencil hardness) and corrosion resistance(cyclic corrosion and filiform corrosion) were investigated. Phosphate coatings enhanced the physical properties of painted Al alloy sheet, especially paint adhesion after the 240hours water immersion test. Phosphate coating also markedly improved the resistance for cyclic corrosion and filiform corrosion of painted cold rolled steel and Zn-Ni plated steel sheet as well as painted Al alloy sheet. The corrosion resistance of painted Al sheets was varied with the concentration of free fluoride ion and metal additives like Ni and Mn in the phosphating bath. A maximum corrosion resistance was obtained at about 300ppm of fluoride ion and additives of Ni and Mn obviously increased the corrosion resistance of painted specimens.

  • Hydroxyapatite $(HAp,\;Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2)$/alumina composites were fabricated with the addition of fluorides, such as $MgF_2$ and $CaF_2$. In this study, the effect of fluorides on the inhibition of phase decomposition and the mechanical properties of HAp was investigated. Due to the higher solubility of F ion in HAp structure, $MgF_2$ additive was more effective compared to $CaF_2$ additive in the lowering decomposition temperature of HAp. Therefore, the dissociation tendency of HAp was fully inhibited below $1400^{\circ}C$. The mechanical properties of HAp composites with $MgF_2$ additive showed higher value (flexural strength: $\~170MPa$, Vickers hardness: $\~7\;GPa$, fracture toughness: $\~1.5\;MPam^{1/2}$) compared to $MgF_2-free$ composites. The linear thermal expansion coefficient of HAp composites with $MgF_2$ showed the value of $16.4\times10^{-6}/^{\circ}C\;at\;20\~400^{\circ}C $.

  • $\alpha$-Alumna particles were prepared by a precipitation method with metal fluoride additive. Aluminum nitrate and ammonia solution were used as starting materials. $AlF_3$, $CaF_2$, and $MnF_2$ were utilized as additives. The effects of precipitation solvent and metal fluoride on the phase transformation temperature, size and morphology of $\alpha$-alumna particles were investigated. The solvent for precipitation did not affect the phase transformation temperature, while it influenced the size of $\alpha$-alumna particles. The phase transformation temperature to $\alpha$-alumna was reduced by addition of metal fluoride and was different with metal cation in metal fluoride ($AlF_3(800^{\circ}C)$ < $MnF_2(900^{\circ}C)$ < $CaF_2(950^{\circ}C)$). The addition of each of three metal fluorides led to the formation of platelike particles and, among the three additives, $MnF_2$ additive resulted in the formation of relatively small particle.

  • This study examined the effects of additives on the physical properties of surimi made from Antarctic krill Euphausia superba. Krill surimi was prepared from krill meat with an added cryoprotectant (sugar 6%, polyphosphate 0.2%). Krill surimi without additives does not form a gel. In order to enhance the gelling of krill surimi, additives such as soy protein isolate (SPI), guar gum, carrageenan, and wheat starch were examined. Of these, SPI had the highest gel-forming activity, while guar gum, carrageenan, and wheat starch had decreasing gel-forming activity and negative effects on other physical properties as their concentrations were increased. In addition, SPI enhanced the gel strength and physical properties of krill surimi. The fluoride and astaxanthin contents of krill surimi with added SPI were 55.0 mg/kg and 0.8 mg/kg, respectively.

  • In biological systems, the mineral that forms hard tissue is of an apatitic nature, and hydroxyapatite($Ca_5OH(PO_4)_3$: HA) is generally considered as the prototype for such a mineral. Thus, the precipitation of HA, having biological implications, has been the subject of several investigations. Crystal growth studies using HA seeds in supersaturated solutions have enhanced our understanding of the process and mechanism involved in seeded crystal growth. From these studies, it has become apparent that the precipitation rate of HA onto the seed crystals depends on the various conditions, especially on the additives. The relation between the supersaturated solution containing fluoride and the process of HA crystal growth enhances the understanding of mechanism of HA crystal growth. Until recently, the studies have been on the crystal growth of enamel minerals and synthetic HA seeds in the supersaturated solution containing 1~2 ppm fluoride. The purpose of the present investigation is to study the effect that fluoride of high concentration has on the crystal growth kinetics of HA. In order to produce the composition found in the secretory enamel fluid, experimental solutions of 1mM Ca, 3mM P, and 100mM Tris as background electrolyte were used. Then this experimental solutions were added to 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 ppm fluoride. The effect of fluoride at high concentrations on the precipitation was examined in a bench-top crystal growth model adopting a miniaturized reaction column. Chemical analysis was employed for characterization of working solutions before and after the experimentation. Remarkable findings were : 1) the amount of crystal growth was gradually accelerated as the fluoride concentration increased until 6 ppm, but decreased in 8 and 10 ppm fluoride; 2) the amount of fluoride ion consumed in crystal formation was constant despite the increase in fluoride concentration.

  • Gel polymer electrolytes were prepared by immersing a porous poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) membrane in an electrolyte solution containing small amounts of polymerizable additive (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, thiophene, biphenyl). The organic additives were electrochemically oxidized to form conductive polymer films on the electrode at high potential. With the gel polymer electrolytes containing different organic additive, lithium-ion polymer cells composed of carbon anode and LiCo$O_2$ cathode were assembled and their cycling performances were evaluated. Adding small amounts of thiophene or 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene to the gel polymer electrolyte was found to reduce the charge transfer resistance in the cell and it thus exhibited less capacity fading and better high rate performance.

  • The effects of the mixed two solvents, Dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and Dimethylformamide (DMF), and Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as additives on performance of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were studied. Initially, PEG200 was used as a primary additive at fixed percentage of 5% wt. PVP was then blended with PEG200 in different concentrations. PVDF and DMAc were used as polymer and solvent in the casting solutions, respectively. To control the diffusion rate of PVP in the presence of PEG200 and PVP blend, mixtures of DMAc and DMF were used as the mixed solvent in the casting solutions. Asymmetric PVDF membranes were prepared via phase inversion process in a water bath and the effects of two additives and two solvents on the membrane morphology, pure water flux (PWF), hydrophilicity and rejection (R) were investigated. Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra (ATR-FTIR) analysis was used to show the residual PVP on the surface of the membranes. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was utilized to determine roughness of membrane surface. The use of mixed solvents in the casting solution resulted in reduction of PVP diffusion rate and increment of PEG diffusion rate. Eventually, PWF and R values reduced, while porosity and hydrophilicity increased.

  • Recently, interest in technology for eco-friendly energy harvesting has been increasing. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is one of the most fascinating materials that has been used in energy harvesting technology as well as micro-filters by utilizing an electrostatic effect. To enhance the performance of the electrostatic effect-based nanogenerator, most studies have focused on enlarging the contact surface area of the pair of materials with different triboelectric series. For this reason, one-dimensional nanofibers have been widely used recently. In order to realize practical energy-harvesting applications, PVDF nanofibers are modified by enlarging their contact surface area, modulating the microstructure of the surface, and maximizing the fraction of the ν-phase by incorporating additives or forming composites with inorganic nanoparticles. Among them, nanocomposite structures incorporating various nanoparticles have been widely investigated to increase the β-phase through strong hydrogen bonding or ion-dipole interactions with -CF2/CH2- of PVDF as well as to enhance the mechanical strength. In this study, we report the recent advances in the nanocomposite structure of PVDF nanofibers and inorganic nanopowders.

  • This paper was carried out to study the preparation condition and the permeation flux of reinforced poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber microfiltration (MF) membrane with the solvent, additive, second miscible polymer, and preparation condition used poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) such as a material with the excellent chemical stability and the milder preparation condition. The performance of the reinforced MF membrane prepared obtained the average $0.3{\mu}m$ pore size, $42kg_f/cm^2$ tensile strength, and the high water flux of 600 LMH. The change of membrane performance with various additives was considerably affected on the water flux and rejection. For hydrophilic modification of hydrophobic PVDF MF membrane, the MF membrane might be prepared with a prefer water flux and rejection by addition of hydrophilic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).
