A Study on Smart Monitoring and Automatic Control based Food Waste Disposer (스마트 모니터링과 자동 제어 기반의 음식물 처리장치 연구)

  • A food waste disposer commonly used in restaurants or homes is a type of machine with an agitator attached. The food waste disposer of the crushing type has a problem that the agitator may be broken if the piping or decomposition filter is blocked. In addition, there is an inconvenience that the user must manually open the cover to check the level in the food waste disposer. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a device that combines basic IoT technology with food waste disposer. The proposed device additionally designs and implement a real-time monitor processor and an automatic control processor inside the existing food waste disposer. The proposed food waste disposer allows the user to monitor the inside of the device using the smartphone. In addition, when the food is filled up to a certain position in the food waste disposer, it automatically stops and alarms. Using the proposed system, the user can conveniently check the inside of the food waste disposer, which has the advantage of preventing malfunctions in advance and reducing the probability of malfunction.

Liquidity Evaluation on the Horizontal Branch Pipe Connected to a Food Waste Disposer (디스포저에 의한 음식물류폐기물 횡지관 유동성 평가)

  • This paper describes liquidity evaluation on the horizontal branch pipe connected to a food waste disposer and performance of five disposers marketed. Experimental apparatus for analyzing the five disposers has been introduced to measure vibration, sound level and power consumption of the disposers. Simulator for analyzing the required water velocity to avoid waste jam inside the pipe connected to a food waste disposer has been designed and constructed. The simulator can control some experimental parameters: pipe slope, disposer supply water quantity, food waste materials and operation time of a disposer. Throughout the experimental measurements of the disposers marketed, it is found that the time need to crash food waste is about 20 seconds on the average. At the same flow condition, increase rate of internal water velocity is accelerated as the pipe slope increases. The water velocity inside the pipe having 50 A and slope of 1/50 is 0.26 m/s when the water flowrate to supply the disposer is 16 l pm. Considering the specific gravity and adhesion property of food waste, water velocity of the horizontal branch pipe connected to a food waste disposer need to excess 0.26 m/s at least to avoid the waste blockage inside the pipe.

Analysis of Product Quality Characteristics Using QFD for Food Waste Disposer Development from Customer Perspective (고객관점의 음식물처리기 개발을 위한 QFD를 활용한 제품품질요인 분석)

  • Recently the market of the food waste disposer has increased. Therefore, many companies in the development of food garbage disposer has been increasing interest. In this study, we used QFD (Quality Function Development) to find out the quality factors for the development of the food waste disposer reflecting the consumer needs. HOQ (House Of Quality) showing the correlation between consumer characteristic and engineering characteristic was written by investigating the consumer needs based on the consumer complaints and survey. In addition, we generated the CTQ (Critical To Quality) reflecting the weighting of the importance of the parts. As the research result, the important quality factors for the food garbage disposer were the grinding capability, drying, and odor emission features. The crushing motor associated with grinding and dehydration appeared as the most important quality factors among the parts. Second thing was the fan motor associated with odor. The findings will be able to contribute to the development of the food waste disposer reflecting the consumer needs.

Cost benefit analysis of introducing domestic food waste disposers on waste and sewage management systems (가정 내 주방용 디스포저 도입에 따른 사회적 비용편익 분석)

  • The use of food waste disposers (FWDs) can be an emerging option to manage organic food wastes in municipal sewage system. The cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of introducing domestic FDWs is conducted to access the allowable disposer market price and the economic impact on food waste management from conventional solid waste management system. If the convenience value of 10,000 won/month is taken into consideration based on survey results, the introduction of FDWs can lead to net economic benefits, allowing the capital cost of disposer up to 1,000,000 won/unit. Without the consideration of convenience value, the introduction of FWDs becomes profitable if the capital cost of disposer is less than 50,000 won/unit. In case that the value of convenience is more than 7,000 won/month, the reduction of food waste management cost is not valid for the introduction of FWDs to be non-profitable. However, if environmental externalities are considered, the proposed system could become breakeven with the cost of food waste management decreases by 54 % (60,000 won per ton).

Anaerobic Hydrogen Fermentation of Food Waste Treated by Food Waste Disposer (주방용 오물분쇄기로 처리된 음식물류 폐기물의 혐기성 수소 발효)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of mesophilic fermentative $H_2$ production from food waste which was treated by food waste disposer. It was found that $H_2$ yield and lag phase were affected by particle size of food waste. The $H_2$ yield decreased with increasing particle size while lag phase increased. The maximum $H_2$ yield was found $0.584{\pm}0.03$ mol $H_2$/mol hexose at particle size smaller than 0.30 mm. The $H_2$ production rate was also affected by chemical composition of food waste. The $H_2$ production rate linearly decreased with increasing proteins to carbohydrates ratio(P/C ratio) where the maximum value was $0.031{\pm}0.006$ mol $H_2$/mol hexose h at 0.17.

  • This article deal with an overview of food waste treatment methods in Korea. Garbage trucks are operated manually by garbage workers who pick up the food wastes after food waste is placed in plastic bags by the road sides. However, there are a lot of problems such as, the smell from the split bags and the leachate, the loss of much energy and the complaints regarding the establishment new rubbish tips from the residents in the surrounding area. It also highlights our society's waste of resources. Although the new pneumatic waste transfer system or the dry method seem to have improved some of the environmental conditions, it still bears some problems, for example, the lack of reuse and recycling of resources and the economic problems. We have been analysed the advantages and disadvantages between the existing food waste system and the pneumatic waste transfer system. And the dry method and disposer were discussed. The results will indicate how the disposer can improve more than the existing systems and will provide the evidence to support.

Advanced Treatment of Wastewater from Food Waste Disposer in Modified Ludzack-Ettinger Type Membrane Bioreactor

  • This paper proposes a modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) type membrane bioreactor (MBR) as a method of treatment for wastewater from food waste disposer. Micro-membrane filtration allows for an extremely low concentration of suspended solids in the effluent. The effluent of the reactor in question is characterized by a relatively high level of non-biodegradable organics, containing a substantial amount of soluble microbial products and biomass. Results obtained in this paper by measurement of membrane fouling are consistent with biomass concentration in the reactor, as opposed to chemical oxygen demand (COD). The MLE process is shown to be effective for the treatment of wastewater with a high COD/N ratio of 20, resulting in are markedly high total nitrogen removal efficiency. Denitrification could be improved at a higher internal recycle ratio. Despite the low concentration of influent phosphorus, the phosphorus concentration of the outflow is seen to be relatively high. This is because outflow phosphorous concentration is related to COD consumption, and the process operates at along solids retention time.

  • It is not long since treatment of food waste became a social problem. However, it is a fact that there have been a lot of debates on the treatment of food waste since several years ago. At present, two ways of disposing food waste are under great interest in Korea and Japan. One is drying of food waste at high temperature. The other is disappearance type, in which analysis by microorganism takes place with continuous supply of a bulking agent for a certain period of time that was stored in a reactor. In our laboratory, Disappearance type Food Waste Disposer is under interest, and experiments regarding condition establishment for efficient analysis of food waste were conducted. As preceding experimentation, experiments were done with regard to the selection of a substance to be used as a bulking agent, improvement by addition of a substance which maximizes initial growth of microorganism, and a concentration change in rank odors generated by reaction with deodorizer (absorbent). The results turned out to be satisfactory.

A Study on a High Efficiency Dryer for Food Waste

  • The food waste that occurs in one year is very high in our country and disposal is expensive. However, disposers for food waste are not used wisely at real life. This is because most of them some kind of problem, for example big volume, complicated construction, high cost, lots of troubles, low energy efficiency and so on. In this study, we propose the new dryer system to decrease drying times by injecting hot air in down the side of the drying bucket. The designed drying bucket has inclined inlet holes down both sides. The inlet holes have variable gradients, we adjust the inlet velocity of the hot air to find a suitable vortex in the drying bucket. We verify the properties of the proposed system though simulation. The results show the proposed dryer system can improve the drying time and save energy for food waste disposal.

  • Our study identifies a cost and a benefit incurred in implementing an investment project to offer new public services by use of food waste disposers and direct input of feces in sewers. This is done with identifying costs of each processing division and benefits of the project by objective statistical data and engineering perspective. In summary, cost items identified are as follows: there are house laterals, removal of septic tanks, etc. for sewer pipes system. As to water quality conservation, cost incurs in storm water outfalls and divert chambers, sewage storage tanks, equipment to treat sewer overflows, and so on. With respect to sewage treatment plants(STPs), there are so many items as increase of contaminant loads in influent of STPs, and other items. There are benefit items in health improvement due to odor mitigation, increase of energy productivity, saving cost of food waste treatment and cleaning septic tanks, etc. These estimates will be used as a basic data for its economic effect.
