  • Collision accident reconstruction algorithm are developed based on the deformation shape and severity of a car body. At first, the body stiffness equation representing the force-deformation relationship is derived using finite element analysis for head on collision of two cars. The database of deformation shapes and energies is constructed for five different collision configurations; each configuration contains three velocity conditions. Deformation shapes are obtained using a curve fitting method and result in cubic polynomials. Deformation energies are calculated using a stiffness equation and deformation data. Three algorithms are developed to reconstruct collision configuration compared with constructed database. The developed algorithms show reasonably good performance to find collisions conditions for some test problems.

  • In this study, the applicability of currently used pipeline.soil interaction force and previously proposed analytical relationship for the response analysis of buried pipeline subjected to transverse permanent ground deformation (PGD) due to liquefaction is evaluated. Based on meaningful contemplation, the improvement of interaction force and proposition of analytical relationship is made. Improved interaction force includes various patterns of PGD or spatial distributions of interaction force caused by the decrease of soil stiffness, and proposed relationship based on improved formula is applicable without regard to the width of PGD. Through the comparison of numerical results by use of commercial FEM program, the rational applicability of proposed relationship is objectively confirmed.

  • Well-designed bolted connections can exhibit excellent ductile behavior through bearing mechanism until the occurrence of bolt shear rupture. The ultimate strength analysis of eccentric bolted connections is an economical and mechanistic approach which uses such ductility. However, the bolt load-deformation relationship, which forms basis of the current practice, is based on very limited combinations of bolt and steel materials. The primary objective of this study was to establish the general bolt force-deformation relationship based on systematic single-bolt bearing connection tests. The test results showed that the projected area of the bolt hole and the strength and thickness of the plate to be connected are the main factors affecting the force-deformation relationship. The results of this study can be used for the instantaneous center of rotation method (ICRM) to achieve more accurate analysis and economical design of a variety of group-bolted connections subjected to eccentric shear.

  • The ASCE formula of lifeline.soil interaction force is the basis of semi-analytical relationship for buried pipelines subjected to longitudinal permanent ground deformation due to seismic induced liquefaction. However, since the ASCE formula has been developed based on the stiffness of non-liquefied region, it is needed to modify for the varied stiffness of liquefied region. With this object, the consideration of decreasing effect of soil stiffness in liquefied region is made: i.e. the spatial distributions of pipeline-soil interaction force in liquefied region. It means that the improved formula can reflect various patterns of permanent ground deformation more realistically. Through the comparative analyses using both the improved and ASCE formula, the applicability of the improved and the limitation of the ASCE formula and semi-analytical relationship are discussed. Also, relative influences of various parameters are evaluated for the clarification of behavior of pipeline subjected to longitudinal permanent ground deformation due to liquefaction.

  • The deformation characteristics is one of the major factors to resume the crash configuration in collision accident reconstruction. Crash analysis are carried out using finite element method and body stiffness equations representing force-deformation relationship are derived, Two different crash conditions : 1) frontal barrier impact 2) frontal impact between cars are given for the derivation of the equations. The stiffness coefficient of equation by method 2) is larger than that by method. 1). Crash analysis between two vehicles is accomplished with three crash angles and three velocities for each angle condition. The deformations are measured for six selected points and deformation energies are calculated using the derived equations. Equation by method 2) results in better estimation of deformation energy than that by method 1) for all crush configurations. The estimated energies can be utilized as one of indices to identify the type of the collision accident result.

  • Anisotropic characteristics of deformation are important to understand the particular behavior in the pre-failure state of soils. Recent experiments shows that cross-anisotropic moduli of granular soils can be expressed by functions of normal stresses in the corresponding directions, which is closely linked to micromechanical characteristics of particles. Granular soils are composed of a number of particles so that the force-displacement relationship at each contact point governs the macroscopic stress-strain relationship. Therefore, the micromechanical approach in which the deformation of granular soils is regarded as a mutual interaction between particle contacts is one of the best ways to investigate the anisotropic deformation of soils. In this study, a numerical program based on the theory of micromechanics is developed. Modified Hertz-Mindlin model is adopted to represent the force-displacement relationship in each contact point for the realistic prediction of anisotropic moduli. To evaluate the model parameters, a set of analytical solutions of anisotropic moduli is derived in the isotropic stress condition. By comparing the analytical solutions with exact values, we confirm that the analytical solutions can be utilized to evaluate model parameters within the acceptable range of error of 10%.

  • Flexible parts comparing with rigid parts can be deformed by contact force during assembly. for successful assembly, information about their deformation as well as possible misalignment between mating parts is essential. Howecer, because of the complex relationship between parts deformation and reaction forces, it is difficult to acquire all required information from the reaction forces alone. In this paper, we measure parts deformation and misalignments by using the visual sensing system presented for flexible parts assembly. Experimental results show that the system can be effectively used for detecting parts deformation and misalignments between mating parts.

  • To calculate the vibrations of a tout cable subjected to axial support excitations, a nonlinear relationship of cable force and the support displacement under static situations are employed to depict the quasi-static vibration of the cable. The dynamic components of quasi-static vibration are inputted as "direct loads" to cause the parametric vibrations on the cable. Both the governing equations of motion and deformation compatibility for parametric vibrations are then derived, which indicates the high coupling of cable parametric force and deformation. Numerical solutions, based on the finite difference method, are put forward for the parametric vibrations, which is validated by the finite element method under periodic axial support excitations. For the quasi-static response, the shorter cables are more sensitive to support excitations than longer ones at small cable force. The quasi-static cable force makes the greatest contribution to the total cable force, but the parametric cable force is responsible for the occurrence of cable loosening at large excitation amplitudes. Moreover, this study also revealed that the traditional approach, assuming a linear relationship between quasi-static cable force and axial support displacement, would result in some great error of the cable parametric responses.

  • In this study, a geometric nonlinear analysis formulation for spatial frames is developed using the 3D stability functions. For the formulation, the relationships of local and global coordinate systems in force, deformation, and the initial and current configurations of a frame are derived. The force-deformation relationship in global coordinate system is derived as well. The developed formulation is verified in each derivation by reducing the derived equations into 2D equations. The gradual plastification of connections and critical sections can be implemented effectively to this formulation for the complete second order inelastic advanced analysis of spatial frames.
