  • Smartphone is very useful for use in the real life through the improvement of computing power, faster data rate and the variety of applications. On the other hand, using the smartphone has been exposed to a lot of crime. Also, it occurs attempting to delete a data of smartphone memory by anti-forensic tools. In this paper, we investigate and analyze the anti-forensic tools used in the Android smartphone to study the characteristics and techniques of anti-forensic tools. In addition, experiments are performed to validate the availability of anti-forensic tools by the Oxygen Forensic Suite that is a commercial forensic tool.

  • Fundamental processes in digital forensic investigation - such as disk imaging - were developed when digital investigation was relatively young. As digital forensic processes and procedures matured, these fundamental tools, that are the pillars of the reset of the data processing and analysis phases of an investigation, largely stayed the same. This work is a study of modern digital forensic imaging software tools. Specifically, we will examine the feature sets of modern digital forensic imaging tools, as well as their development and release cycles to understand patterns of fundamental tool development. Based on this survey, we show the weakness in current digital investigation fundamental software development and maintenance over time. We also provide recommendations on how to improve fundamental tools.

  • As E-discovery in criminal investigation is increasing, the importance of Forensic Tools which can legally extract data with high effectiveness is getting higher. Digital products are growing fast. Therefore, Forensic Tools should be implemented readily to suit users and events well. Although forensic industry and governments use expensive forensic tools, some have suggested limitations to its use, such as memory limitations and the limits of post-audit. We need to develop open source forensic tools that can implement a variety of forensic tool fast. This research studies digital forensics technical skills which are commercialized currently and suggests applicable strategies of the open digital forensics to help overcome these limitations.

  • The increases in UAVs(Unman Aerial Vehicle) such as drone result in safety issues and the threat of illegal drone as well. Recognizing the need for Drone forensics, domestic and foreign organizations and agencies are trying to establish drone forensic guidelines. The definition of Drone forensic artifacts and examination of forensic tools must be provided, in order to establish a practical drone forensic framework on security sites and also the concept of drone live forensic which provides meaningful data that can be extracted in a live state. In this study, the drone forensic methodology covering various types of drones is explained, and the practical forensic methodology with live forensic PoC(Proof Of Concept) tools; LiPFo(Live-PX4-Forenensic) is proposed.

  • As mobile forensics has emerged as an essential technique, the demand for technology development, education and training is increasing, wherein images are used. Academic societies in South Korea and national institutions in the US and the UK are leading the Mobile Forensic Image development. However, compared with disks, images developed in a mobile environment are few cases and have less active research, causing a waste of time, money, and manpower. Mobile Forensic Images are also difficult to trust owing to insufficient verification processes. Additionally, in South Korea, there are legal issues involving the Telecommunications Business Act and the Act on the Protection and Use of Location Information. Therefore, in this study, we requested a review of a standard model for the development of Mobile Forensic Image from experts and designed an 11-step development model. The steps of the model are as follows: a. setting of design directions, b. scenario design, c. selection of analysis techniques, d. review of legal issues, e. creation of virtual information, f. configuring system settings, g. performing imaging as per scenarios, h. Developing a checklist, i. internal verification, j. external verification, and k. confirmation of validity. Finally, we identified the differences between the mobile and disk environments and discussed the institutional efforts of South Korea. This study will also provide a guideline for the development of professional quality verification and proficiency tests as well as technology and talent-nurturing tools. We propose a method that can be used as a guide to secure pan-national trust in forensic examiners and tools. We expect this study to strengthen the mobile forensics capabilities of forensic examiners and researchers. This research will be used for the verification and evaluation of individuals and institutions, contributing to national security, eventually.

  • File system forensics typically focus on the contents or timestamps of a file, and it is common to work around file/directory centers. But to recover a deleted file on the disk or use a carving technique to find and connect partial missing content, the evidence must be analyzed using cluster-centered analysis. Forensics tools such as EnCase, TSK, and X-ways, provide a basic ability to get information about disk clusters, but these are not the core functions of the tools. Alternatively, Sysinternals' DiskView tool provides a more intuitive visualization function, which makes it easier to obtain information around disk clusters. In addition, most current tools are for Windows. There are very few forensic analysis tools for MacOS, and furthermore, cluster analysis tools are very rare. In this paper, we developed a tool named FACT (Forensic Analyzer based Cluster Information Tool) for analyzing the state of clusters in a HFS+ file system, for digital forensics. The FACT consists of three features, a Cluster based analysis, B-tree based analysis, and Directory based analysis. The Cluster based analysis is the main feature, and was basically developed for cluster analysis. The FACT tool's cluster visualization feature plays a central role. The FACT tool was programmed in two programming languages, C/C++ and Python. The core part for analyzing the HFS+ filesystem was programmed in C/C++ and the visualization part is implemented using the Python Tkinter library. The features in this study will evolve into key forensics tools for use in MacOS, and by providing additional GUI capabilities can be very important for cluster-centric forensics analysis.

  • A digital forensic technology and tools are used much in the rapidly increased cyber intrusion accident investigation. But, almost the identification and gathering tools of digital forensic evidence are very difficultly integrated and simply poor-skill. Thereby, Important digital evidences at intrusion accident investigation of public institution and a private enterprise can be omitted or demaged. In this paper, therefore, we refer to 'The digital forensic tool for identification and gathering evidence' based only Window OS by using 'Log Parser', discuss the methodology for the identification and gathering of digital forensic evidence by cyber intrusion accident types.

  • Computer security incident such as confidential information leak and data destruction are constantly growing and it becomes threat to information in digital devices. To respond against the incident, digital forensic techniques are also developing to help digital incident investigation. With the development of digital forensic technology, a variety of forensic artifact has been developed to trace the behavior of users. Also, a diversity of forensic tool has been developed to extract information from forensic artifact. However, there is a issue that information from forensic tools has its own forms. To solve this problem, it needs to process data when it is output from forensic tools. Then it needs to compare and analyze processed data to identify how data is related each other and interpret the implications. To reach this, it calls for effective method to store and output data in the course of data processing. This paper aims to propose DFIOC (Digital Forensic Indicators Of Compromise) that is capable of transcribing a variety of forensic artifact information effectively during incident analysis and response. DFIOC, which is XML based format, provides "Evidence" to represent various forensic artifacts in the incident investigation. Furthermore, It provides "Forensic Analysis" to report forensic analysis result and also gives "Indicator" to investigate the trace of incidence quickly. By logging data into one sheet in DFIOC format for forensic analysis process, it is capable of avoiding unnecessary data processing. Lastly, since collected information is recorded in a normalized format, data input and output becomes much easier as well as it will be convenient to use for identification of collected information and analysis of data relationship.
