A PROOF OF STIRLING'S FORMULA

  • The object of present note is to give a very short proof of Stirling's formula which uses only a formula for the generalized zeta function. There are several proofs for this formula. For example, Dr. E. J. Routh gave an elementary proof using Wallis' theorem in lectures at Cambridge ([5, pp.66-68]). We can find another proof which used the Maclaurin summation formula ([5, pp.116-120]). In [1], they used the Central Limit Theorem or the inversion theorem for characteristic functions. In [2], pp. Diaconis and D. Freeman provided another proof similarly as in [1]. J. M. Patin [7] used the Lebesgue dominated convergence theorem.

AN EXTENSION OF REDUCTION FORMULA FOR LITTLEWOOD-RICHARDSON COEFFICIENTS

  • There is a well-known classical reduction formula by Griffiths and Harris for Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, which reduces one part from each partition. In this article, we consider an extension of the reduction formula reducing two parts from each partition. This extension is a special case of the factorization theorem of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients by King, Tollu, and Toumazet (the KTT theorem). This case of the KTT factorization theorem is of particular interest, because, in this case, the KTT theorem is simply a reduction formula reducing two parts from each partition. A bijective proof using tableaux of this reduction formula is given in this paper while the KTT theorem is proved using hives.

A MONOTONICITY FORMULA AND A LIOUVILLE TYPE THEOREM OF V-HARMONIC MAPS

  • We establish a monotonicity formula of V-harmonic maps by using the stress-energy tensor. Use the monotonicity formula, we can derive a Liouville type theorem for V-harmonic maps. As applications, we also obtain monotonicity and constancy of Weyl harmonic maps from conformal manifolds to Riemannian manifolds and ${\pm}holomorphic$ maps between almost Hermitian manifolds. Finally, a constant boundary-value problem of V-harmonic maps is considered.

  • Summation theorems for hypergeometric series $_2F_1$ and generalized hypergeometric series $_pF_q$ play important roles in themselves and their diverse applications. Some summation theorems for $_2F_1$ and $_pF_q$ have been established in several or many ways. Here we give a proof of Watson's classical summation theorem for the series $_3F_2$(1) by following the same lines used by Rakha [7] except for the last step in which we applied an integral formula introduced by Choi et al. [3].

  • Bearman's rotation theorem is not only very important in pure mathematics but also plays the key role for various research areas, related to Wiener measure. In 2002, the author and professor Im introduced the concept of analogue of Wiener measure, a kind of generalization of Wiener measure and they presented the several papers associated with it. In this article, we prove a formula on analogue of Wiener measure, similar to the formula in Bearman's rotation theorem.

  • Ductility is very important parameter in seismic design of RC members such as beams where it allows RC beams to dissipate the seismic energy. In this field, the curvature ductility has taken a large part of interest compared to the deflection ductility. For this reason, the present paper aims to propose a general formula for predicting the deflection ductility factor of RC beams under mid-span load. Firstly, the moment area theorem is used to develop a model in order to calculate the yield and the ultimate deflections; then this model is validated by using some results extracted from previous researches. Secondly, a general formula of deflection ductility factor is written based on the developed deflection expressions. The new formula is depended on curvature ductility factor, beam length, and plastic hinge length. To facilitate the use of this formula, a parametric study on the curvature ductility factor is conducted in order to write it in simple manner without the need for curvature calculations. Therefore, the deflection ductility factor can be directly calculated based on beam length, plastic hinge length, concrete strength, reinforcement ratios, and yield strength of steel reinforcement. Finally, the new formula of deflection ductility factor is compared with the model previously developed based on the moment area theorem. The results show the good performance of the new formula.

  • This paper presents a fundamental theorem of calculus, an integration by parts formula and a version of equiintegrability convergence theorem for the Mα-integral using the Mα-strong Lusin condition. In the convergence theorem, to be able to relax the condition of being point-wise convergent everywhere to point-wise convergent almost everywhere, the uniform Mα-strong Lusin condition was imposed.

  • In this paper, we first develop a general formula for evaluating conditional abstract Wiener integrals of cylinder functions. we next use our formula to evaluate the conditional abstract wiener integral of various cylinder functions and then specialize our results to conditional Yeh-Wiener integrals to show that we can obtain the corresponding results by Park and Skoug. We finally obtain a Cameron-Martin translation theorem for conditional abstract Wiener integrals.
