  • In this study, we have investigated the closure behavior of fatigue cracks in SAPH440 steel plates under a mixed-mode I+II loading. A crack image capturing system as a direct measuring method was used to measure the closure levels at a crack tip. The crack closure levels in the fluctuation and stable sections were increased with the increase of the mode mixture ratio. The mode mixture ratio independent fatigue crack propagation rates equation was calculated by considering mixed-mode crack closure levels. The equation was examined according to the application method of crack opening ratio. The fracture surface analysis by C-scan method was also performed in order to investigate the closure mechanism and propagation mode of crack under the mixed-mode I+II loading. The crack closure under the mixed mode I+II is confirmed as a surface roughness closure by the quantitative analysis of fracture surface using the proposed surface roughness parameter.

  • Turbine blade has trouble of cracking at root region. Fracture surface of blade root is surveyed by SEM and AFM to clear relation between fracture mechanical parameter and surface parameter (striation width and surface roughness). Service stress is predicted by maximum height roughness $R_{max}$, on fractured surface and stress analysis on turbine blade. It is to thought that turbine blade is fractured by abnormal condition such as incorrect fittings between pin and pin hole but isn't fractured by normal service conditions such as steam pressure, centrifugal force and torsional force.

  • End milling is available for machining the variable shape of products and has brrn widely applied in many Manufacturing industries. The surface finish of machined parts determines quality and functionality of products. Surface roughness causes friction, noise, fracture, glossiness and seizure, so many research had been performed to precisely. In particular an experimental analysis was carried out to investigate the influence ofsurface roughness on the fractal dimension. This parameter was assumed to contain not only information of roughness but also extra meaning. Experiments which were performed under various cutting conditions to compare fractal dimension with surface roughness R /sab a/ show fractal dimension to be useful parameter for determining of roughness.

  • A fractal analysis on fracture surface of aluminium-particulate SiC composites was attempted. As the volume fraction of SiC in composites increases, the fractal dimension tends to increase. However, no correlation between the fractal dimension and the fracture toughness in terms of critical energy release rate was observed. Since the fractal dimension represents the roughness of fracture surface, the fracture toughness would be a function of not only fracture surface roughness but also additional parameters. Thus the applicability of fractal analysis to the estimation of fracture toughness must depend on the proper choice and interpretation of additioal paramerters. In this paper, the size of characteristic strctural unit for fracture was considered as an additional parameter. As a result, the size appeared to be a function of only volume fraction of SiC. Finally, a master curve for fracture toughness of aluminium-particulate SiC composites was proposed as a function of fractal dimension and volume fraction of SiC.

  • This study reports the grinding characteristics of quartz. Grinding experiments were performed at various grinding conditions including wheel mesh, table speed and depth of cut. The grinding forces and specific grinding energies were measured. Surface roughness was also measured with tracer and the ground surfaces were observed with SEM. A new parameter SDR(Surface roughness Direction Ratio) is proposed to characterize the grinding mechanisms of quartz. A set of experiments was performed to verify the effectiveness of the suggested parameter. The experimental results indicate that the ductile mode is the dominant material removal mode at the grinding conditions which show the higher value of SDR whereas the material is removed by brittle fracture in a lower value of SDR value increases with wheel mesh size.

  • Titanium based implants are known to improve their osseointegration by controlling surface roughness from nanometers to micrometers. Implants continuously and/or repeatedly receive irregular loads in the human body, and require a deeper understanding of the tensile and fatigue properties that can determine the fracture characteristics of the materials. In this study, the plastic deformation behavior which depends on the surface geometry of the materials during tensile tests was analyzed using the finite element method. As a result, the tensile properties were greatly decreased with increasing the sharpness of the surface. On the other hand, the average roughness had no significant effect on tensile properties. This investigation shed a light on developing titanium implants with improved osseointegration by surface treatments.

  • In the previous report1), the grinding characteristics of quartz were investigated. In this paper, the grinding mechanisms of brittle materials including ceramics and quartz are modeled and a new parameter SDR(Surface roughness Direction Ratio) is proposed to characterize the grinding mechanisms of such materials. A set of experiments were performed to verify the effectiveness of the suggested parameter. The experimental results indicate that the plastic deformation is the dominant material removal mode at the grinding conditions which show the higher value of SDR. In the case of quartz, the material was removed by brittle fracture in a lower value of SDR and by plastic deformation in a higher value of it. SDR is not affected by wheel mesh size when brittle fracture occured. But in the plastic deformation case, SDR value increases with wheel mesh size.

  • The result of wear test for ceramic materials was assessed by Scf parameter to verify the usefulness of the proposed Scf parameter. Friction and wear tests were carried out with ball on disk type. The materials used in this study were HIPed Alumina $(Al_2O_3)$, Silicon carbide (sic), Silicon nitride $(Si_3N_4)$ and Zirconia $(ZrO_2)$. The tests were carried out at room temperature with self mated couples of ceramic materials under lubricated condition. Turbine oil was used as a lubricant. In this test, increasing the load, specific wear rates and wear coefficients of four kinds of ceramic materials had a tendency to increase. The wear coefficients of ceramic materials were in order of $Al_2O_3, SiC, Si_3N_4, ZrO_2$. Worn surfaces investigated by SEM had residual surface cracks and wear particles caused by brittle fracture. As the fracture toughness of ceramic materials was higher, wear resistance more increased. The roughness of worn surface had correlation with wear rate. The wear rate(W$_{s}$) and Scf parameter showed linear relationship in log-log coordinates and the wear equation was given as $W_s = 5.52 $\times$ Scf^{5.01}$.

  • The simulation of dynamic load was conducted based on surface profile on asphalt concrete pavement, vehicle speeds, and suspension types using a truck simulation program. The results of the simulated dynamic load based on different surface profile, vehicle speeds, and suspension types are analyzed. As pavement roughness and vehicle speed are increased, the dynamic load was increased. Walking beam suspension produces greater dynamic load than air spring suspension. Pavement damage index is calculated based on covariance of dynamic load and Paris-Erdogan fracture parameter, n which is based on creep compliance tests of asphalt mixtures used in Korea. The higher covariance of dynamic load, confidence level, and fracture parameter are used, the greater pavement damage index is obtained. Specification of pavement roughness can be developed in various vehicle speeds and asphalt mixtures, and pay factor can be determined after constructing asphalt concrete pavement using pavement damage concepts.
