  • In this paper, we propose an efficient method to detect abrupt shot changes in compressed MPEG video data by using reference ratios among video frames. The reference ratios among video frames imply the degree of similarities among adjacent frames by prediction coded type of each frames. A shot change is detected if the similarity degrees of a frame and its adjacent frames are low. This paper proposes an efficient shot change detection algorithm by using Fuzzy c-means(FCM) clustering algorithm. The FCM clustering uses the shot change probabilities evaluated in the mask matching of reference ratios and difference measure values based on frame reference ratios.

  • In this paper, a modeling method for the vibration analysis of rotating structures composed of beams and shells employing multi-reference frames is presented. The rotary inertia effect and the geometric stiffening effect that results from centrifugal inertia force we considered for beams and shells with lumped mass model. In most previous studies, single reference frame has been employed for the vibration analysis. In the present study, a modeling method employing multi-reference frames is presented and the effects of employing multi-reference frames on the analysis accuracy are investigated through solving numerical examples.

  • This paper presents a fast multi-reference frame integer motion estimator for H.264/AVC. The proposed system uses the previously proposed fast multi-reference frame algorithm. The previously proposed algorithm executes a full search area motion estimation in reference frames 0 and 1. After that, the search areas of motion estimation in reference frames 2, 3 and 4 are minimized by a linear relationship between the motion vector and the distances from the current frame to the reference frames. For hardware implementation, the modified algorithm optimizes the search area, reduces the overlapping search area and modifies a division equation. Because the search area is reduced, the amount of computation is reduced by 58.7%. In experimental results, the modified algorithm shows an increase of bit-rate in 0.36% when compared with the five reference frame standard. The pipeline structure and the memory controller are also adopted for real-time video encoding. The proposed system is implemented using 0.13 um CMOS technology, and the gate count is 1089K with 6.50 KB of internal SRAM. It can encode a Full HD video ($1920{\times}1080P@30Hz$) in real-time at a 135 MHz clock speed with 5 reference frames.

  • A modeling method for the modal analysis of rotating beam structures having complex configurations employing multi-reference frames is presented in the present study. In most structural analysis methods, single reference frame is employed for the modal analysis. For simple structures such as single beam or single plate, the method of employing single reference frame usually provides rapidly converging accurate results. However, for general structures having complex configurations, such a method provides slowly converging, and often erroneous, results. In the present study, the effects of employing multi-reference frames on the convergence and the accuracy of the modal analysis of rotating beam structures having complex configurations are investigated.

  • In the new video coding standard H.264/AVC, motion estimation (ME) is allowed to search multiple reference frames for improve the rate-distortion performance. The complexity of multi-frame motion estimation increases linearly with the number of used reference frame. However, the distortion gain given by each reference frame varies with the video sequence, and it is not efficient to search through all the candidate frames. In this paper, we propose a fast mult-frame selection method using all zero coefficient block (AZCB) prediction and sum of difference (SAD) of neighbor block. Simulation results show that the speed of the proposed algorithm is up to two times faster than exhaustive search of multiple reference frames with similar quality and bit-rate.

  • This study aims to investigate gifted students' explanations for daily celestial motion from the Earth-based and heliocentric frames of reference. Eleven sixth-grade elementary school students were chosen for this study and data was collected through a questionnaire and an in-depth interview. The collected data was analyzed into celestial objects which are the Sun, the moon and the stars and analyzed based on the Earth-based and heliocentric perspectives again. As a result of the research, most gifted students were able to connect the Earth-based and heliocentric frames of reference with the Sun's daily apparent motion. However, they understood the daily apparent motion of the moon and the stars far less frequently compared to the Sun's motion and could not explain the Earth's rotation clearly. The result of the interview showed that the lack of understanding about the daily celestial motion was caused by inaccurate understanding of the Earth's rotation such as using memorized knowledge learned in school and guessing the answer.

  • Due to the increasing demand for more rapid, precise and accurate geolocation of the targets on video frames from UAVs, an efficient and timely method for correcting sensor models of motion imagery is required. In this paper, we propose a method to adjust or correct sensor models of motion imagery frames using space resection via image matching with reference data. The proposed method adopts image matching between the motion imagery frames and the reference frames which are synthesized from reference data. Ground or reference control points are generated or selected through the matching process in near real time, and are used for space resection to get adjusted sensor models. Finally, more precise and accurate geolocation of the targets can possibly be done on the fly, and we have got the promising result on performance analysis in terms of the geolocation quality.
